霞谷學과 茶山學의 사상적 연계 고찰을 위한 試論 — 四德⋅四端論을 중심으로 — (A Study on the Ideological Connection between Hagok Studies and Dasan Studies)

초록

본 논고는 다산 정약용(茶山 丁若鏞)이 하곡(霞谷) 후학인 원교 이광사(圓嶠 李匡師)의 사단(四端)및 기질론(氣質論)에 적극적으로 동조한 것과 하곡과 다산의 사단칠정론(四端七情論)이 지니는 공통적 이해에 근거하여, 하곡학(霞谷學)과 다산학(茶山學)의 상호 연계성을 시론적으로 검토한 것이다. 이들의 공통된 이해는 사덕⋅사단(四德⋅四端)의 개념규정 문제와 사단칠정(四端七情)의 선⋅불선 문제로 나누어 살펴볼 수 있다. 먼저 사덕⋅사단에 대해서 하곡과 다산은 모두 ‘단(端)’을 곧 ‘시(始)’로 보고, 사단은 곧 본원의 시작점이며 사덕은 행사(行事)가 이루어지고 난 뒤 사단이 확충된 결과라고 하였다. 이들은 성(性)을 고정적이고 형이상적인 실체로 보는 것을 부정했다. 사단칠정의 선⋅불선 문제에 대해서도 하곡과 다산의 결론은 동일하다. 그것은 사단도 불선할 수 있고 칠정도 선할 수 있으며, 불선의 원인이 기질에 의한 것은 아니고 매사 천리와 인위의 구분이 중요하다는 것이다. 그러나 선⋅불선의 과정을 설명하는 부분은 인성에 대한 규정차로 인한 상이점이 존재한다. 하곡은 불선의 상태가 성이나 양지의 가려짐이며, 사단의 확충은 도덕 판단과 행위 속에서 항상 志에 따르는 것이 관건이라고 보았다. 반면 다산은 선⋅불선은 자주권(自主權)의 선택이며 천리(天理)의 공(公)을 따르는가 인욕(人欲)의 사(私)를 따르는가에 달려있다. 다산의 사단칠정론은 일본고학파의 견해보다 하곡의 견해와 친연성을 지닌다. 하곡학과 다산학의 인성론이 지닌 사상적 연관성 논의는 향후 사상사 연구에서 좀더 면밀하게 고찰해야 할 과제이다.

영어초록

The paper is an introductory study of the mutual interrelation between Hagok Studies and Dasan Studies. It is based on the fact that Dasan Jeong Yak-yong strongly agreed to the Theory of Innate Human Mind and Disposition by Wonkyo Lee Gwang-sa, a scholar of Hagok Studies, as well as the common understanding of both Hagok Studies and Dasan’s Theory of Innate Human Mind and Human Emotions Expressed by Nature. Their common understanding is examined by dividing into the issue of establishing the concept of the Theory of Innate Human Mind and Four Virtues, as well as the question of good and evil. First, regarding the Four Virtues and Theory of Innate Human Mind, Hagok Studies and Dasan both viewed ‘dan (innateness)’ as the beginning, that Theory of Innate Human Mind is the starting point of the source, and that the Four Virtues are the results of expanding the Theory of Innate Human Mind after an event occurs. They denied viewing human character as a fixed, metaphysical being. Hagok Studies and Dasan draw the same conclusion for the question of good and evil in Theory of Innate Human Mind and Human Emotions Expressed by Nature. That is, an innate human mind can be evil and the human emotions expressed by nature can be good, and the cause of evilness is not a disposition and it is important to distinguish the nature of law and human work. However, both are different in explaining the process of good and evil due to their different definitions of character.
Hagok Studies regarded that the state of evilness is the covering of inborn knowledge, and the expansion of the Theory of Innate Human Mind is mainly determined by always following will amidst ethical judgement and behaviors.
On the other hand, Dasan perceived that good and evil is a choice made by independent self-authority and depends on following either the public character of the law of nature or the personal interest of human desire. Dasan’s Theory of Innate Human Mind and Human Emotions Expressed by Nature has more opinions and naturalness of Hagok Studies rather than the viewpoints of Japanese Classical Studies. It is necessary to further examine the ideological connections of Hagok Studies and Dagok Studies in follow-up ideology studies.
