근곡(槿谷) 박 동완의 기독교적 자존자립의 독립정신 (Pak, Tong-Wan’s Self-Respected and Self-Reliant Spirit of Christian Independence)

초록

남북분단과 4대강대국의 틈바구니 속에서 민족의 생존을 모색해야 하는 현재의 대한민국은 과거에도 동일한 문제에 직면해있었다. 조선은 지정학적 특성 때문에 대륙으로 진출하고자 하는 일제의 야욕 앞에서 나라의 주권을 빼앗긴 채 민족적 비극을 맞이할 수밖에 없었다. 당시, 민족의 불행을 기회로 사리사욕을 일삼았던 친일세력은 아직도 건재하며, 이념의 대립과 갈등으로 인해 대한민국은 그 어느 때보다 혼란에 빠져 있다. 이러한 상황에서 구한말에 태어나 일제강점기에 한국과 하와이에서 독립운동을 펼치다 생을 마감한 근곡(槿谷) 박 동완(1885.12.27.-1941.2.23.)의 삶과 사상은 한 개인이 역사와 신앙 앞에서 어떤 목적을 가지고 어떻게 행동해야 되는지 올바른방향성을 제시해 준다. 본 연구는 박 동완의 사상에 대한 최초의 본격적인 연구라 할 수 있으나, 그의 사상을 전부 다루지는못하였다. 다만, 구한말에 개신교 신앙을 받아들였던 그의 기독교에 기반한 독립정신에 초점을 맞추었다. 그는 눈에 보이는현상만으로는 불가능해 보이나 눈에 보이지 않는 ‘생명과 사랑의 예수정신’에 의지한다면 조선 민족은 반드시 독립할 것이라확신하였다. 성서적 시각으로 세상을 바라보았던 그는 식민지조선에 살았지만 서양 문명과 일제에 당당히 맞설 수 있었다. 박 동완은 누구도 가기 꺼려했던 3․1독립운동에 자발적․적극적으로 참여하여 자존자립의 독립정신을 유감없이 표출하였다. 수감 후에도 일제 관헌 앞에서 전혀 주눅 들지 않고 자신의 독립의지를 선언하였다. 이러한 기독교적 자존자립의 독립정신이있었기에 그는 언제나 희망을 잃지 않았으며, 그리스도 신자라면 생각한 것을 말로 표현하고 행동으로 옮겨야 된다고 믿었다. 그는 독립을 향한 투지와 의지가 그 누구보다 강했으며 무엇보다 예수 그리스도를 신뢰하는 믿음이 심층 저변에 자리 잡고 있었다. 그랬기에 박 동완은 식민지 상태의 조선 민족에게희망을 줄 수 있었으며 항일정신을 고취시키고 그것을 기독교적 자존자립의 독립정신으로 승화시킬 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 철저한 기독교 민족주의자이자 언론인인 박 동완이 <기독신보>와 <신생명> 그리고 <한인기독교보>에 남긴 글과 3․1독립운동 당시 일제 관헌에 의해 작성된 신문조서 및 재판기록을통해 그의 자존자립의 독립정신을 살펴보고자 한다.

영어초록

Present South Korea, a country that is seeking survival in the middle of the gap between North Korea and the Great Powers, faced the same problem even in the past. Because of its geopolitical nature, Chosun had to face national tragedy caused by the sovereignty of colonial Japanese and its ambition to take over the continent. Unfortunately, the power of the pro-Japanese group that took advantage of its own power to cultivate their fortunes through the misfortunes of the nation still exists today. Now, the country of Korea is more confused than ever before because of ideological conflict between various ideological parties of Korea. The life and thoughts of Pak, Tong-Wan (1885.12.27.-1941.2.23.), who was born at the end of the Chosun era and became part of the Independence Movement in Korea and Hawaii during the Japanese colonial period, provide guidance to individual’s purpose on faith and history of this difficult era. This research is the first thorough research conducted to find out the thoughts of Pak, Tong-Wan, but the research was not enough to cover all his thoughts. However, Pak obtained his Protestant faith at the end of the Chosun era, and this research mainly focused on the Christ-based independence spirit. Pak was convinced that the Korean nation will prevail and become independent if the people of the Korean nation relied on the invisible but great power of ‘Jesus’s spirit of life and love.’ Even though Pak lived in colonial Chosun, he was able to stand up against Western civilization and Japanese colonialism through the biblical perspective. Pak, Tong-Wan explicitly expressed his independent spirit of self-respect and self-reliance by voluntarily and actively participating in the 3.1 Independence Movement, the movement that no one was reluctant to participate in. After the imprisonment, Pak did not flinch in front of Japanese government officials and declared his will to become independent. Because of his self-respected and self-reliant independent Christian spirit, Pak believed that he should not lose hope and all Christians should speak by their actions all the time. No one could exceed Pak’s determination and will for independence, but above all, a deep trust in Jesus Christ. As a result, Pak was able to plant the seed of hope in the heart of the Chosun nation and its people, which lit the fire for independence from colonial Japan and sublimated himself to the self-respected and self-reliant spirit of Christian independence. The purpose of this research is to observe Pak’s self-respected and self-reliant spirit of independence during the 3.1 Independence Movement through the documents recorded by Japanese government officials, and the articles The Christian Messenger, New Life, and Hawaii Korean Christian Herald, written by the Christian nationalist and journalist Pak, Tong-Wan from other time.
