尤庵 宋時烈의 栗谷 心性論 이해 (Song Siyeol's Views on Yulgok's theory of mind-nature)

초록

尤庵 宋時烈은 17세기 栗谷학파의 지도자로서 退溪학파와의 대결 구도 속에서 栗谷 心性論에 대해 적극적으로 지지하고 수용하는 태도를 견지하였다. 心是氣說에 대해서는 性卽理說과 상호 보완적인 관계에 있는 이론이라고 설명하면서 先儒들의 학설 가운데 관련된 내용들을 근거로 제시하여 그 정당성을 확보하고자 하였다. 그리고 性心情意一路說에 대해서는 純善한 本然之性인 五性으로부터 善惡이 혼재한 七情이 유발된다는 栗谷의 理일원적 性情論을 충실하게 계승하면서, 이를 ‘모든 事物의 근본은 理이므로 天下에 理를 벗어난 사물[理外之事]이 없고 性을 벗어난 사물[性外之物]이 없다’는 언명으로 정식화함으로써 理일원적 관점을 강화하였다.
尤庵은 이러한 관점을 人心道心說에서 보다 철저하게 적용하여 人心과 道心을 모두 本然之理로 규정하였다. 즉 本然之性으로부터 ‘直出’하여 人心이 中節한 것을 ‘人心 本然의 體段’이라고 명명하고, 本然之性으로부터 ‘傍出’하여 人心이 不中節한 경우를 人心이 왜곡 변질된 人欲으로 간주함으로써, 人心이 원칙적으로 善하다는 점을 강조한 것이다.
이와 같이 尤庵은 전반적으로 栗谷의 心性論을 지지하고 계승하는 태도를 취하지만, 유독 四端의 개념에 대해서 만큼은 이견을 보이고 있다. 氣發理乘一途說에 입각할 때, 七情에 中節과 不中節이 있는 것과 마찬가지로 四端에도 中節과 不中節이 있다는 것이다. 따라서 四端과 七情은 동일한 것으로 간주된다.
四端七情論에서 특기할 만한 사항은 尤庵이 情의 포섭관계를 규명하는 부분이다. 즉 本然之性으로부터 유발되는 수만 가지의 情은 四端과 七情으로 통합되고, 四端과 七情은 惡(오)와 欲 두 가지로 통합되며, 惡(오)와 欲은 惻隱 한 가지로 통합된다는 것이다. 이를 역으로 재구성하면 仁의 발현인 惻隱 한 가지가 생명현상의 파괴를 부정하는 惡(오)와 생명현상의 고양을 긍정하는 欲의 두 가지로 분화되고, 惡(오)와 欲은 다시 四端과 七情으로 분화되며, 四端과 七情은 수만 가지의 情으로 분화되는 것으로 설명된다. 이러한 尤庵의 견해는 四端을 食色과 대비시키는 『孟子』의 문맥에서 벗어난 것으로, ‘天下에 理를 벗어난 사물[理外之事]이 없고 性을 벗어난 사물[性外之物]이 없다’는 理일원적 性情論의 논리적인 전개가 도달한 궁극적인 결론이라고 생각된다.

영어초록

Song Siyeol as a leader of Yulgok School in the 17th century, supported Yulgok's theory of mind-nature, in confrontation with Toegye School. The theory that 'human mind is the disposition(qi)' and the theory that 'human nature is the principle(li)', he explained that has a complementary relationship, the evidence presented to the opinion of previous wise confucian scholars. For the monistic theory of mind-nature, he faithfully succeeded Yulgok's monistic theory of principle(li) and reinforced Yulgok's perspective by saying that the root of all things is principle(li).
Song Siyeol applied more thoroughly this point of view to the theory of bodily desire and altruistic feeling, by both bodily desire and altruistic feeling has defined as original principle(li). Thus proper bodily desire, which arise straightly from originally good human nature, is called original state of bodily desire, but improper bodily desire, which arise diagonally from originally good human nature, is called devil. It stressed that bodily desire is essentially good .
As such, Song Siyeol inherited largely Yulgok's theory of mind-nature, but presented differrent opinions about the concept of the four beginnings. On the basis of monistic theory of the principle(li) and disposition(qi), the four beginnings is divided into proper response and into improper response, as well as the seven feelings is divided into proper response and into improper response. Therefore the four beginnings and seven feelings are considered to be the same.
It is a noteworthy feature in the theoy of the four beginnings and seven feelings that Song Siyeol explained the subsumable relations of feelings. Many kinds of feelings, which arise from originally good human nature, are integrated into the four beginnings and seven feelings. Then, both the four beginnings and seven feelings are integrated into dislike and desire. Then again, both dislike and desire are integrated into compassion. Reconstructing the opposite direction, compassion which arise from benevolence is divided into dislike and desire. Then, dislike and desire are divided into the four beginnings and seven feelings. Then again, the four beginnings and seven feelings are divided into many kinds of feelings. This view is based on the monistic theory of principle(li) that there are no things out of the principle(li).
