谷那鐵山과 百濟 (Yokna(谷那) Iron－mountain and Baekje)

초록

삼국시대의 身分을 나타내는 威勢品으로서 耳飾에 대한 논고는 상당히 축적된 바 있다. 그런데 주목을 요하는 耳飾이 존재한다. 백제의 한성 도읍기(BC.18~AD.475)에 제작한 4곳의 耳飾들이었다. 서울의 석촌동과 익산 입점리와 전라남도 谷城 석곡리와 방송리에서 출토된 모두 4개의 金製 耳飾에 관한 것이다.
백제의 國都였던 서울을 軸으로 할 때 익산은 그렇다 치더라도 곡성은 산간 지대인 동시에 交通路의 부담이 큰 遠距離임이 분명하였다. 그런 관계로 곡성 출토 耳飾의 편년을 웅진성 도읍기(475~538)로 상정하기도 했다. 그런데 이 경우는 『日本書紀』 神功 49년조에 대한 이해가 전제될 때 풀리게 된다. 神功 49년인 369년에 백제군은 낙동강유역에서 우회한 후 古奚津인 康津에서 집결하여 忱彌多禮를 屠戮하였다. 여기서 중요한 사실은 백제가 要港인 강진을 장악했고, 침미다례인 해남을 철저하게 제압했다는 것이다. 백제는 이때 중국의 新나라 화폐인 貨泉이 출토될 정도로 교역의 거점이기도 했던 군곡리 패총을 끼고 있는 해남을 장악했다. 그 후에 백제 아화왕의 무례함을 빌미로 倭가 빼앗아 갔다는 東韓의 땅 가운데 침미다례와 더불어 谷那가 보인다. 이로 미루어 볼 때 谷那 역시 침미다례와 더불어 369년 무렵에 백제에 장악되었던 것으로 간주된다. 동시에 고흥반도의 안동 길두리 고분의 피장자가 백제 중앙과 긴밀한 관계를 맺었음이 드러 났었다. 그렇다고 할 때 한성 도읍기의 백제는 지금의 전라남도 해안인 강진과 해남 및 고흥반도 일원을 장악했음을 알 수 있다. 요컨대 4세기 후반 이후 백제는 전라남도 해안을 장악했던 것이다.
그런데 백제 근초고왕은 倭에 使臣을 파견하여 谷那鐵山의 우수함을 선전하였다. 백제왕이 倭王에게 하사한 七支刀는 谷那鐵山의 山鐵로 제작한 것이었다. 그러한 谷那鐵山의 위치에 대해서는 황해도 谷山을 비롯하여 그 인근으로 비정하는 견해가 많았다. 백제가 이 무렵 고구려에 대한 군사적 우세를 취하는 상황에서 새롭게 지배한 鑛山으로 간주하였던 것이다. 그러나 이러한 비정은 전혀 타당성이 없는 것으로 밝혔다. 반면 谷那는 전라남도 谷城으로 究明되는 동시에 백제가 남해안 일대를 장악하는 상황에서 개척한 鐵鑛으로 밝혀졌다. 곡성에서는 철광의 존재를 암시하는 정황적 증거들이 많았다.
良質의 鐵鑛인 谷那鐵山의 개발과 관련해 당시 중요한 鐵鑛은 운송로의 용이한 개척이 전제되어야만 했다. 곡성의 谷那鐵山은 보성강과 섬진강을 매개로 한 후 남해안과 서해안을 거슬러 올라가서 백제 중앙으로 공급하는 게 가능했다. 그러니 백제의 섬진강유역 진출과 장악은 4세기 후반까지로 소급될 수 있는 것이었다. 무녕왕대에 이르러 섬진강유역에 대한 지배권을 둘러싸고 백제와 대가야가 대립하게 된 것은 谷那鐵山의 광물 운송로의 항구적인 확보와 대외 교섭 창구의 확보라는 양보할 수 없는 긴박한 이해관계가 충돌된 데서 비롯되었다.

영어초록

It is thought that the 4 pieces of gold earring each excavated nearby the 4th Grave located in Seokchon－dong, Seoul, around the 1st Grave located in Ipjeom－ri, Iksan, in Seokgong－ri, Gokseong(谷城) and in Bangsong－ri, Gokseong were all used during the Hanseong Capital era (B.C.18~A.D.475). They are formed of long gold chains to which small heat looking plates are attached at their bottoms. It is the issue that the gold earrings with same form and used in same era have been found in Seoul, Iksan and Gokseong areas respectively. Considering that the current Seoul was the capital of Baekje, such earrings could be found in Iksan in terms of distance from Seoul. However, Gokseong is a mountain region, which is too far to go to from Seoul. That is why some suppose that such earrings excavated in Gokseong were used during the Ungjin Capital era(475~538). This issue, however, can be solved according to the recording shown in the section about the 49th year of Jin Gou, Nihon Shoki. In 369, the 49th year of Jin Gou, the forces of Baekje bypassed Nakdong River region and gathered in Gangjin that was a harbor called Gohaejin to destroy Chimmidarye. Here, the key point is that Baekje seized Gangjin, one of the important harbors then, and completely overpowered Haenam of Chimmidarye. At that time, that is, Baekje took control of Haenam, which had Gungok－ri shell heap that played the hub of trading so vividly that Hwacheon(貨泉), money of Chinese Shin(新) dynasty, was excavated. The recording shows also Yokna as well as Chimmidarye of Donghan(東韓). It says that Yokna was taken by Japanese Yamato(倭) dynasty later to punish the rudeness of King Ahwa(阿花王) of Baekje. From this point of historical fact, it is thought that Yokna was also seized by Baekje around 369 together with Chimmidarye. In addition, it was revealed that the person buried in an old grave in Goheung peninsular had close relationship with the central government of Baekje. This fact indicates that Baekje took control of Gangjin, Haenam and Goheung peninsular located around the coastal area of current Jeonranam－do during its Hanseong Capital era. That is, Baekje had dominated Jeonranam－do coastal area since late 4th century.
The King Geunchogo of Baekje dispatched his envoy to Japanese Oi to announce the superiority of Yokna Iron－mountain. Chiljido that the king of Baekje presented down to the king of Oi was made of the mountain iron mined from Yokna Iron－mountain. There have been, however, many views that supposed the location of such Iron－mountain was Goksan, Hwanghae－do and its surrounding areas. They thought that Goksan was the mine that Baekje newly took control of with their bigger military power than that of Goguryeo then. I, however, revealed that such views were not acceptable at all and that Yokna was Gokseong of Jeonranam－do, which was the Iron－mountain that Baekje pioneered while taking control of the south coastal area. There are many circumstantial proofs that infer the existence of iron mine in Gokseong.
Development of Yokna Iron－mountain for good quality iron must have been after pioneering of transportation path good enough to transport iron. Yokna Iron－mountain of Gokseong made it possible to provide iron to the capital of Baekje using the path made through Boseong River, Seomjin River, south coast and west coast. The history that Baekje went down to Seomjin River area to seize could be dated back to late 4th century. The opposition between Baekje and Tae－Gaya for domination of Seomjin River area in the era of King Munyeong was caused by collision of desperate interests for permanent seizure of the transportation path of the resources mined from Yokna Iron－mountain and securing of communication area that could never be conceded to the other.
