『대학』 해석의 상이성 지닌 의미 고찰-주희와 왕수인 그리고 윤휴의 견해를 중심으로 (The study about various perspective of interpretation on 『Da Xue』)

초록

이 글은 『대학』을 이해하는 몇 가지의 관점들을 살펴보고, 이것이 어떤 의미를 지니고 있는지를 정리하기 위한 것이다.
주희가 『대학』에 대한 체계를 새롭게 구성한 후에 많은 학술적 논변이 일어났다. 『고본대학』 자체를 그대로 인정하는가, 아니면 주희의 『대학장구』를 수용할 것인가 하는 것이 첫 번째의 문제이다. 왕양명, 윤휴, 정약용 등은 『고본대학』 자체로도 문제가 없기 때문에, 주희의 작업은 무의미하다고 보고 있다.
두 번째의 문제는 강령의 개수에 대한 것이다. 주희는 명명덕, 친민, 지어지선을 삼강령이라 주장한다. 그러나 이와 다르게 두 개의 강령만이 있을 뿐이라는 입장인데, 박세당의 경우가 여기에 해당한다. 그는 지어지선에 대한 주희의 해석과 지어지선과 연계되는 조목이 없는 점을 들어 지어지선을 강령으로 인정하지 않는다.
『대학』이해에 있어 가장 큰 논란은 격물치지에 대한 해석에 있다. 주희는 격물치지를 사물에 즉하여 이치를 궁구하는 것으로 이해한다. 이러한 그의 해석에는 두 가지의 지향점이 있다. 하나는 사물의 존재법칙을 인식하는 것이고, 다른 하나는 윤리법칙을 자각하고 실현하는 것이다.
왕수인은 주희가 격물설을 통하여 제시하고 있는 방법론을 비판하고 있는데, 그는 이것을 인식론이 아닌 수양론적 관점에서 이해하고 있기 때문이다. 그는 공부에 있어 가장 우선적인 것이 誠意라고 보고 때문에, 격물치지를 급선무라고 생각하는 주희의 관점을 거부하는 것이다.
윤휴는 격물을 두 가지의 방법론적인 측면에서 이해하고 있다. 하나는 마음과 관련된 것으로서, 방심을 수렴하고, 엄숙, 고요, 전일한 상태를 유지하여 본원의 밝음을 통해 사물을 이해하는 것이다. 다른 하나는 살펴서 묻고, 정밀하게 생각하여 연구를 거듭하여 신화의 경지에 이르는 것이다. 첫 번째가 인간의 마음과 관련된 수양의 문제이고, 두 번째는 사물을 연구의 대상으로 삼고 그 방법적인 측면을 말한 것이다.
다음으로 명덕에 대한 개념규정과 명명덕의 필요성에 대한 설명을 살펴보면, 주희와 왕수인의 견해는 크게 다르지 않다. 한편 윤휴나 정약용은 명덕을 효제의 마음이나, 효·제·자 자체로 이해하고 있어, ‘뭇 이치를 갖추고 만사에 응하는 것’이라고 추상적으로 규정한 주희의 견해와는 사뭇 다름을 알 수 있다.
끝으로 친민의 해석에 있어서는 우선 주희는 정이천의 견해를 수용하여 신민설을 주장한다. 반면에 왕수인 백성에 대한 치자의 마음과 실천에 주목하여 친민이라 보는 것이 타당하다고 보고 있다. 윤휴의 경우를 보면, 신민을 부정하고 친민을 옹호하였다는 기존의 연구가 있었지만, 내용을 확인하면 그렇지 않음을 알 수 있다. 정약용은 친민설을 지지하여 신민으로 해석하는 것을 기본적으로는 찬성하지 않는다. 그러나 다른 한편으로는 친(親)자와 신(新)자가 외형적인 모습의 유사성만큼이나 의미도 상통하는 것으로 보기도 한다.

The purpose of this article is to arrange some perspectives of interpretation on 『Da Xue』 and find out the significance in it.
There were many academical disputes after Zhu Xi had come up with the new structures of 『Da Xue』. The first problem is whether to accept the 『Gobondaehak』 itself, or to agree with Zhu Xi’s 『Daehakjanggu』. According to Wang Yangming, Yun Hyu and Jeong Yak-yong, Zhu Xi’s work is pointless because there is no issue in accepting 『Da Xue』 itself. The second problem is about numbering of the doctrines. Zhu Xi claims ‘Manifesting the clear character’, ‘Loving the people’ and ‘abiding in the highest good’ as the three doctrines. But Park Sae-dang asserts that there are only two doctrines despite Zhu Xi's claim. Park Sae-dang doesn’t recognize ‘abiding in the highest good’ as one of the doctrine. He supports his argument by saying that there is no connection between Zhu Xi’s interpretation of ‘abiding in the highest good’ and the articles in 『Gobondaehak』.
The biggest controversy of understanding 『Da Xue』 lies in the interpretation of ‘extending knowledge by investigation’. Zhu Xi understands ‘extending knowledge by investigation’ as a response of reaching out to the objects. His purpose for this interpretation is to perceive and act according to ‘the law of existence’ and ‘the law of ethics’.
Wang Yangming criticizes Zhu Xi’s methodology on ‘extending knowledge by investigation’ because Wang Yangming sees Zhu Xi’s ‘extending knowledge by investigation’ as a theory of self moral training, not as a epistemology. Wang Yangming insist the priority of studying is to be sincere. Therefore he resists Zhu Xi’s idea of putting ‘extending knowledge by investigation’ above all.
Yun Hyu understands ‘the study of things and nature’ as two different methods. One is related to mind and another is related to searching and considering cautiously and precisely. Methods relating to mind make you stay in the status where you keep yourself complete and peaceful through gathering your disrupted and scattered mind. The other method is about reaching the stage of hallowedness through thinking keenly and investigating carefully. The first method is about mind and its development and the second is about the methodology of outside objects around the world.
Zhu Xi and Wang Yangming agree on prescribing the concept of ‘prestigious virtue’ and the necessity of ‘Manifesting the clear character’. But Yun Hyu and Jeong Yak-yong understand ‘prestigious virtue’ as filial piety and brotherly love or the letter itself as filial piety, brotherly love, and affection. Therefore, their definition of ‘prestigious virtue’ is different from Zhu Xi’s abstract definition: ‘interaction with its natural law’.
Lastly, for the understanding of ‘Loving the people’, Zhu Xi accepts the concept of ‘Renew the people’ as Jeong Yi Cheon. But Wang Yangming thinks it’s appropriate to focus on the heart of ruler and his practice in the interpretation. There was a study saying that Yun Hyu agreed on ‘Loving the people’ only and disagreed on ‘Renew the people’. But if you look closely, he did not. Jeong Yak-yong stands for ‘Loving the people’ and disproved it’s interpretation as ‘Renew the people’. However, he accepted that there are some meanings in common in the interpretation since the letters ‘Chin(親)’ and ‘Shin(新)’ are similar.
