초록

누가복음 안에는 갈릴리인들에 대한 빌라도의 상반된 이해가 나타난다. 하나는 갈릴리인들을 학살하는 부정적인 모습이고(눅 13:1), 다른 하나는 예수가 갈릴리인임을 알고 처형하기를 꺼려하는 긍정적인 모습이다(23:6). 그렇다면 갈릴리인에 대한 평면적인 이해가 아닌 입체적인 이해의 가능성은 존재하는가? 이에 대한 도움으로 요세푸스의 작품들 안에 나타나는 갈릴리인들에 대한 이중적 이해를 살펴본다. 요세푸스의 갈릴리인들에 대한 학계의 대체적인 동의는 요세푸스가 ‘갈릴리인들’이란 용어를 이중적으로 사용했다는 것이다. 하나는 『자서전』에 등장하는 反로마적 혁명주의 세력인 ‘정치적인 갈릴리인들’이다. 다른 하나는 『전쟁사』에 등장하는 단순히 갈릴리라는 지역 출신이거나 그 지역에 속하는 ‘지리적인 갈릴리인들’이다. 따라서 이러한 정치적 갈릴리인들과 지리적 갈릴리인들이라는 이중적인 이해를 통하여 누가복음 13:1-3을 새롭게 해석할 수 있다. 예수는 지리적 갈릴리인들을 대상으로 가르침을 전하고 있었다. 그런데 그 안에 숨어있던 정치적 갈릴리인들은 예수에게 유월절 준비기간 동안 예루살렘 성전에서 빌라도에게 죽임을 당한 갈릴리인들에 대하여 정치적 논평을 요청한다. 예수는 학살당한 갈릴리인들을 ‘영웅’으로 보는 정치적 갈릴리인들과 이와는 달리 ‘죄인’으로 보는 지리적 갈릴리인들을 향하여, 정치적 갈릴리인들이 지리적 갈릴리인들보다 더 큰 죄인이 아니라는 점을 반문하고, 더 나아가 정치적 갈릴리인들과 지리적 갈릴리인들 모두는 죄인으로서 다 같이 회개해야 할 것을 촉구한다. 이러한 예수의 대답은 각 갈릴리 집단에 대한 이중적인 효과를 지닌다. 우선 정치적 갈릴리인들에게는 죽임을 당한 갈릴리인들을 영웅이 아닌 죄인으로 규정함으로써 시험을 목적으로 한 정치적 논평의 요구를 종교적 답변으로서 회피한다. 그리고 지리적 갈릴리인들에게는 그들이 정치적 갈릴리인보다 덜한 죄인이라는, 그들이 가지고 있던 전통적인 인과응보의 신학에 도전한다. 마지막으로 예수의 답변은 정치적인 갈릴리인들과 지리적인 갈릴리인들 모두 로마제국의 갈릴리 침공에 대비하여 모두가 하나님께 회개해야 함을 주장한다.

영어초록

There are Pilate’s contrary perspectives of the Galileans in the Gospel of Luke. One is the negative perspective in Luke 13:1, where Pilate slaughtered several Galileans. The other is the positive perspective in Luke 23:6, where despite knowing that Jesus’ identity is Galilean, Pilate was reluctant to execute Jesus. Is there any possibility that the Galileans can be understood not as plane but as solid? For this, I observe the double understanding of the Galileans in the works of Josephus. The large agreement on Josephus’ Galileans of the academic world is that Josephus would have used the term ‘Galileans’ doubly. One is the political Galileans in Josephus’ Life, the ones who were in anti-Roman position and in revolutionary stance. The other is the geographical Galileans in Josephus’ War, the ones who came from Galilee or were inhabited in the province. Thus, this writing can interpret the passage of Luke 13:1-3 according to the double senses between the political Galileans and the geographical Galileans. Jesus was teaching the crowd who consisted of the geographical Galileans. Hidden among them, however, the political Galileans asked Jesus to politically comment on the news in which Pilate slaughtered some political Galileans in the Jerusalem temple, in the preparing period of the Passover. Jesus asked in return toward both the political Galileans who viewed the dead as ‘heroes’ and the geographical Galileans who viewed the dead as ‘sinners’, saying that the political Galileans were not worse sinners than the geographical Galileans, and urged the crowd, including the reporters, to repent together. These statements of Jesus played the double roles on each group of the Galileans respectively. In the first place, Jesus could escape from the political request aimed at testing Jesus, by identifying the slaughtered Galileans as not heroes but sinners. And then, toward the geographical Galileans, Jesus could challenged their conventional theology, so-called the Deuteronomic belief. Finally, Jesus insisted that all the Galileans should repent their sins, preparing for the attack of the Roman Empire on Galilee.
