조선시대 성리학의 연원인 주자학의 전개 양상 그리고 양명학에 대한 오해 (The Development Patterns of the Zhu Xi’s School of Thought in Joseon and Neo-Confucian Scholars' Misunderstanding of the Yang Ming's School of Thought in Joseon)

초록

이 논문은 중국과 한국에서 주자학의 전개 양상 차이, 그리고 조선성리학자들의 양명학에 대한 오해와 그 원인을 분석한 것이다. 조선성리학이 분명 주자학 중심으로 전개되었음은 주지의 사실이다. 그렇다면 조선성리학이 중국 주자학의 아류인가? 필자는 결코 그렇게 생각하지 않는다. 주자학은 주자 사후 거의 300년이 지나 조선에 전래되지만 중국보다도 더욱 다양한 주제와 정밀한 논리 그리고 다른 체계와 틀로서 진행된다. 적어도 학술 범주를 주자학으로만 국한시켜 본다면 중국보다도 더욱 치밀하고 섬세하였으며, 학술 주제 역시 다채로웠다. 중국에서 주자의 성리학은 주자에 의하여 리기론과 심성론 그리고 공부론까지, 모든 방면에서 정점에 도달했기 때문에 주자 사후 주자 성리학의 외연을 확장하거나 학술의 기본체계를 전환하는 새로운 성리학 논쟁은 발생하지 않았고 대부분 주자학 존숭 방법과 실천중심으로 전개되었다. 그러나 조선성리학은 중국과 다른 방향으로 전개된다. 즉 조선성리학의 논변과 전개 양상은 도덕행위론과 심성론을 리기라는 형이상학 개념으로 환원시켜 논의를 전개한다는 것이다. 필자는 이 논문에서 조선성리학이 왜 이러한 양상으로 전개되었는지 그 원인을 탐색하여 분석하였다. 필자는 불교와의 차별화라는 시대정신, 그리고 고려 말부터 조선 중기까지 수입된 주자학 문헌의 구성과 체제에서 그 원인을 찾았다.

영어초록

This paper set out to examine differences in the development patterns of the Zhu Xi’s school of thought between China and Korea and analyze the misunderstanding of the Yang Ming’s school of thought among Joseon’s Neo-Confucian scholars and its causes. It is a fact that Joseon’s Neo-Confucianism developed around the Zhu Xi’s school of thought, but is it safe to say that Joseon’s Neo-Confucianism is an imitation of the Zhu Xi’s school of thought in China? I believe firmly that it is not the case. The Zhu Xi’s school of thought was introduced into Joseon almost 300 years after his death. The Zhu Xi’s school of thought in Joseon developed with more diverse topics, precise logic and different systems and frameworks than its counterpart in China. When the academic scope is limited only to the Zhu Xi’s school of thought, Joseon was more thorough and sophisticated and covered more colorful academic topics than China. In China, the Zhu Xi’s school of thought reached its apex almost across every field including the theory of li and qi, the theory of the mind and human nature, and the theory of self-cultivation thanks to Zhu Xi himself, which explains why there were no attempts to broaden the extension of the school or new philosophical disputes to change the basic academic system after his death. Most efforts developed around the inheritance and practice of the Zhu Xi’s school of thought. In Joseon, Neo-Confucianism developed in a different direction from China. That is, Joseon’s Neo-Confucianism developed its arguments and discussions by reverting the theory of moral behavior and the theory of the mind and human nature to the metaphysical concept of li and qi. I explored and analyzed the causes behind this development pattern of Joseon’s Neo-Confucianism. The causes were found in the spirit of the times to differentiate from Buddhism and the composition and system of the literature about the Zhu Xi’s school of thought imported from the end of Goryeo to middle Joseon.
