“영혼의 순례기”: 록밴드 U2의 음악과 삶, 그리고 믿음(1980–1989) (“A Travelogue of the Soul”:An Irish Rock Band, U2’s Music, Life and Faith (1980–1989))

초록

아일랜드 출신 록밴드 U2는 대중성과 예술성 모두에서 찬사를 받는이 시대 최고의 밴드이다. 지난 30년 동안 끊임없는 음악적 실험과 창의적 사운드, 첨단 기술과 예술성의 절묘한 조화와 카리스마로 청중들을 사로잡는 콘서트 미학까지 U2의 음악적 성취는 실로 놀랍다. 더 나아가 U2는 음악과 활동을 통해 여러 사회적 문제점들을 주시하고 비판의 목소리를 탁월한 비유로 표현해냈고, 리더인 보노는 폭넓은 사회활동으로 두 차례나 노벨평화상 후보에 올랐다. 더 나아가 U2의 거의 모든 노래 가사에는 심오한 기독교 가치관과 신학적 주제들과 영적인 메시지가 담겨져 있다. U2는 대중음악을 통한 진지한 영적 순례의 걸음을 계속하고 있으며,오늘날 가장 영향력 있는 기독교 인사 중 한 명임에 틀림없다. 이런 U2의음악과 사회 활동은 기독교 문화의 가장 중요한 사례이며 최선의 방향이다. 본 논문은 데뷔 이후 U2의 광범위한 작품들과 활동을 종교적 측면에서 분석하였다. 우선 그들의 신앙의 뿌리라 할 수 있는 샬롬 공동체에서의 회심 과정을 살펴보고, 세속음악계에서 기독교 메시지를 강하게 드러내는 동기와 성격을 고찰한다. 두 번째로 아일랜드 출신의 언더그라운드(underground) 밴드인 U2가 어떻게 주류 음악계를 뒤집고 새로운 대안(alternative)을 제시하며 성공했는지 그 음악적 특성을 당대의 문화 환경과 비교해 분석하였다. 여기에서 본 논문은 U2가 당대의 파괴적 펑크 음악과 상업적 팝 음악의 흐름과 구별된 활동의 중심에 자신들의 기독교 신앙에 기초한 가치의 발현이었음을 밝힌다. 마지막으로 U2는 자신들의 많은 노래에(가사에) 믿음과 회의의 역설적 딜레마와 신의 나라를 향한 영적순례를 진지하게 풀어냈다. 본 논문은 U2의 전성기였던 1980년대의 대표작들을 중심으로 그 신학적 의미와 가치를 논한다.

“A Travelogue of the Soul”:An Irish Rock Band, U2’s Music, Life and Faith (1980–1989)A famous evangelist, Billy Graham once evaluated one of the U2’salbum, Joshua Tree: “This album is a travelogue of the soul.” Thisexpression could be the best description for the music and life of U2during the last thirty five years. An Irish Rock band, U2 is one of themost influential musicians today for both its musical excellence andpopular success. U2 received twenty two Grammy Awards and soldmore than a hundred million copies of albums. Most of all, U2expressed vivid Christian values and serious spiritual concerns inmost of their songs. U2 has taken a long “spiritual journey” throughtheir musical careers and various social activities. U2’s musical careercan be a good direction of Christian culture and missions. This paperintend to trace and evaluate U2’s fascinating music and life. For thisstudy, this paper carefully examines all the U2’s songs as well as variousdocuments and media materials both primary and secondary.
First, this paper analyzes the motive and character of the members’religious backgrounds and conversion experience especially intheir early participation of Charismatic community “Shalom.” Second,this paper depicts an amazing story of U2’s musical success. This storysuggests a creative development from “underground” to “alternative.”This band started as an underground school band in Dublin, Island.
Yet U2 has become “the Rock band of the 1980s” when many criticsconcerned the death of Rock because of the emergence of commercialism in the music market. U2 tried to recover the primitive Rockspirit of resistance focusing on “love and peace” ideal of the 1960s.
Finally this paper interprets some of U2‘s songs with theological perspectives.
U2’s songs like “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for”and “40” talk about serious theological issues of faith and doubt,hope and despair, and the problem of theodicy. This paper tries todiscover academic and cultural values of popular Christian heritagewhich were easily ignored in intellectual world.
