논술이 학생들에게 미치는 세 가지 영향소외감, 두려움 그리고 방관하는 태도 (The Three Types of Effects that Essay Has On Students-Sense of Alienation, Fear and Indifferent Attitude)

초록

대학 입시에서 논술이 중요한 비중을 차지하게 되면서 교육 현장에서도 논술 교육은 다양한 형태로 이루어지고 있다. 논술에 대한 다양한 연구성과 및 실천 사례가 축적되고 있음에도 불구하고, 논술 수업은 현장에서 여전히 학생이나 교사에서 상당히 부담스러운 것으로 받아들여진다. 본 논문은 이와 같은 현상이 왜 발생하였는지를 규명하기 위해 논술 교육이 학생들에게 초래하는 몇 가지 부정적 영향들을 살펴보고 있다.
논술이 학생들에게 미치는 영향은 크게 세 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫 번째는 학생들에게 소외감을 초래한다는 점이다. 대학 입시의 측면에서 보았을 때 논술은 상위권 대학에 진학할 일부 학생들을 대상으로 이루어지고 있으므로 그로부터 배제된 학생들은 소외감을 느낄 수밖에 없다. 두 번째로 논술은 학생들에게 두려움을 줄 수 있는데, 이 두려움은 다음 두 가지 원인에 의해 생겨난다. 제시된 지문과 논술 문제 자체가 지나치게 어렵다는 점이 바로 첫 번째 원인이며, 논술이라는 글쓰기 상황 자체가 두려움을 초래할 수밖에 없다는 점이 두 번째 원인이다. 대학입학을 목적으로 글쓰기를 해야 한다는 논술의 본질적 특성은 학생들에게 글쓰기에 대한 적지 않은 부담을 주기 마련이다. 논술이 학생들에게 미치는 세 번째 영향은 학생들에게 방관하는 태도를 조장한다는 점이다. 이것은 논술을 준비하는 과정에서 대척적인 두 입장 가운데 선택을 강요하는 논제가 많다는 점에서 기인한다. 현재 한국 사회에서 첨예한 대립을 불러일으키는 문제들에 대해 자신의 견해를 표명하기를 요구하는 논제들은 학생들을 양비론이나 양시론에 빠지게 하거나, 아니면 무책임한 글쓰기로 빠지게 한다. 또한 이는 학생들이 사회 문제에 대해 적극적으로 참여하는 태도를 길러주기 보다는 방관을 일관하는 태도를 조장한다는 측면에서 바람직하지 않다. 이처럼 논술이 학생들에게 미치는 부정적인 영향을 살펴볼 때 현장 교육에 필요한 것은 논술 교육의 강화라기보다는 학생들의 직․간접적인 체험과 결부된 자유로운 형식의 글쓰기라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

As the essay has taken up an important part in the university entrance, the essay education is also being performed as various forms in the education scene. Despite the fact that various study results and cases of practice on essay are being accumulated, the essay lesson is still being accepted as something which is quite burdening to students or teachers at the scene. This thesis takes a look at several negative effects that essay education causes for students in order to clarify why this has happened.
The effects of essay on students can be mainly summarized into three types. First is the fact that it causes a sense of alienation for students. Considering from the aspect of university entrance, because the essay is only being performed on some students who will enter top universities, the students who are excluded from this can only feel a sense of alienation. Second, while the essay can give a sense of fear to students, this fear appears out of the following two reasons. The very fact that the presented passage and the essay question itself are extremely difficult is the first reason and the fact that the writing situation called essay itself can only cause fear is the second reason. The essential nature of essay that one must write for the purpose of university entrance always causes quite a burden to students on writing. The third effect of essay on students is the fact that it promotes an indifferent attitude for students. This is causes by the fact that are many subjects of arguments forcing to choose between two opposite positions in the process of preparing for the essay. in current Korean society, the subjects of argument demanding to express one's own opinion on problems arousing a sharp confrontation make students fall into antagonism or protagonism of both sides or fall into irresponsible writing. Also, this isn't advisable in the aspect that it promotes an attitude of consistent indifference for students rather than raising the attitude of active participation in social problems. Looking into these negative effects of essay on students, the thing which is necessary for education field could be called a free style writing connected with direct and indirect experiences of students rather than intensifying the essay education.
