디지털 영화 미학의 응용적 연구: 캐릭터, 성격, 얼굴, 그리고 얼굴영상생성모델 (A Digital Cinematic Aesthetic: Character, Personality, Face, and Automatic Image Creation System)

초록

It is well-known that creating a digital character such as Gollum of The Lord of the Rings needs so much money and energy. What a great contribution it will be to develop a digital aesthetic system that automatically creates the facial image of a character according to his/her characteristics! One of the recent studies on automatic facial image creating system on the base of physiognomy is “A Study on a Facial Visualization System Based on One’s Personality as Applied to East Asian Physiognomy” conducted by Seonhee Kang, Hyodong Kim, and Kyungwon Lee. Critically examining the study of Seonhee Kang et la, the current paper suggests the following to develop an automatic system to create the facial image of digital character.
1) Character is characterized not only by his/her personality but also by his/her species, race, ethnicity, sex, age, social status, education, weight, and others. We have to determine what traits of character should be taken into account in facial image system.
2) The category of character trait should be divided into subcategories; for example, race, one of the character traits, should be divided into Asian, black, and white.
3) Personality, one of the character traits, should also be subdivided and represented by personality adjectives on the basis of their usages in MBTI, Five Factor Model, and physiognomy.
4) A character usually has multiple personalty traits, one of which is more important than others in cinema. According to their importance, the personality traits should be classified into “very dominant +2,” “dominant +1,” “average 0,” “weak +1,” and “very weak +2.”
5) Whereas the study of Seonhee Kang et al produced the facial image of a standard Korean man, we should create the standard facial images of man and woman according to their character traits such as race, ethnicity, sex, age, and others.
6) Human face is composed of many elements such as facial shape, eyes, nose, forehead, lips, and others. We have to determine what facial elements should be taken into account in the facial image system.
7) Facial elements are usually given different values in their reception. According to their importance, facial elements should also be classified into “very dominant +2,” “dominant +1,” “average 0,” “weak +1,” and “very weak +2.”
8) Each facial element should be divided into subunits; for example, the eye element can be divided into several types.
9) Emotional facial expressions of a character such as “anger,” “fear,” and “surprise” should be visualized and represented by vocabularies.
10) By combining the above list of factors in the proper methods, we can create the typical facial image of a character.
