초록

본 논고는 연구 작품을 중심으로 음식 오브제에 내재된 인간의 탐욕과 폭력의 흔적, 그리고 음식 재료로 사용되는 동물의 생명성에 대한 회귀를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구자는 음식 재료를 살아있었던 생명체로 인지될 수 있는 소재라고 판단하였다. 연구 작품은 음식 재료 안에 내재된 인간의 탐욕과 폭력성, 그리고 이에 대한 생명의 재인식을 제시 하고자 한다. 연구자는 인류가 생산, 소비하는 식재료의 가공 이전의 상태, 즉 살아있는 ‘생명체’였던 시점을 상기하고 그 생명에 대한 인간의 개입이 매우 폭력적이며, 그 근저에는 인간의 이기적 탐욕이 자리하고 있음을 환기하고자 한다.
연구 작품은 사적인 경험에서 시작되었다. 연구자의 유년시절 기억은 동물의 생(生)·사(使)에 대한 갈등으로 육류, 닭, 생선 등의 식재료들을 만질 수 없다. 그렇지만 음식을 먹을 때는 기억하지 못하는 감각에 대한 의문이 작품의 동기이다. 연구자는 일상생활에서 경험한 이중적 감각에 대한 오류에 문제를 제기하였다. 이러한 감각의 오류는 인식으로서 가지고 있는 ‘생명에 대한 존귀함’과 매번 식탁 위에 오르는 음식이 된 ‘죽어있는 생명’에 대한 시선의 불편함이다. 이러한 이유는 ‘기억과 일상’이 다른 상태로 저장되었고 시간의 경과에 따라 다른 현실에서 이성과 감성이 혼선을 일으키는 것이다. 또한 잔재로 남아있는 유년시절의 기억과 이성, 지각이 충돌하는 감정들이 연구 작업의 소재가 되었다. 연구자는 생명성에 대한 관심을 기초로 한 사물의 이미지를 재해석하며, 이를 작품에 반영하고자 하였다.
‘생명을 잃은 식재료’는 연구 작품 안에서 생명에 대한 새로운 조형 표현으로 탄생시키는 모티브이자 원초적 에너지이다. 음식 재료는 그 안에 담긴 인간의 탐욕에 대한 연구자의 시점을 드러내고자 하였다. 이에 공장식 축산과 유전자 조작으로 대량생산되는 동·식물들이 생명으로 인지되지 못한 채 아무런 거리낌 없이 다루어지는 행위들의 근본에 대한 의문을 제기하고 있으며, 이에 대한 연구자의 사적인 감성과 소지하고 있는 소품들을 연계하여 작품을 하였다.
작품에서 사용하는 음식 재료 오브제는 연구자의 일상과 연결되어 있으며, 다양한 상상을 통해 구체적인 것에서 출발하여 상징적인 의미로 제시하였다. 또한 여성의 전유물로 상징하는 핸드백, 하이힐 등에 투영되는 사회 권력과 힘은 사회적 체계에 익숙해 있는 여성의 관습과 가부장제도의 산물이라고 보았다. 오늘날 여성들의 전유물인 핸드백, 구두와 의상 등은 자본주의사회에서 상품으로서 값이 매겨지고 있다. 이러한 상품은 여성의 권력을 상징하기도 하며, 유행을 만들어 내기도 한다. 또한 희귀동물의 가죽과 털 등으로 만들어진 핸드백과 구두, 의상은 고가의 가격으로 판매되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 연구 작품은 이러한 여성의 전유물과 음식 재료를 이용하여 다양한 형태로 표현한다.
연구 작품의 조형적 측면에서 음식재료는 단순한 오브제가 아닌 ‘생(生)과 사(使)’의 윤회적인 입장을 지속적으로 표현하고자 하는 것이다. 또한 연구 작품을 통하여 자아에 대한 탐구와 해석을 주관적으로 확대시키고자 한다. 연구자는 작품 제작 과정을 통해 인간으로서 먹을거리에도 생명에 대한 의식과 검토가 필요하다는 것을 인식하였으며, 좀 더 확장시켜 자연에 대한 인간의 탐욕과 폭력은 인류의 미래에 부정적인 영향을 준다는 것을 상기하여야 함을 강조하고자 한다. 연구 작품에서 음식 재료는 탐욕과 폭력에 의해 도살, 사육, 채집된 상징으로 사용되었다. 음식 재료 오브제로써의 이면에 숨어있는 약자에 대한 불평등과 차별, 소비생산제로 착취되고 있는 동물의 생명성에 대한 인식, 그리고 생태와 여성의 상호 보완적인 관계를 인간 중심의 시각을 넘어 자연주의적 시각으로 고찰하고자 한다.
본 논고를 통하여 생명에 대한 재인식의 필요성을 주장한다. 또한 생태학에 대한 세계관, 생명의 존엄성, 자연에 대한 인간이 가져야 할 태도와 그에 따른 생명의 숭고함을 조형적으로 표현하고자 한다. 연구자는 연구 작품을 통하여 인식하지 못하는 작은 생명에 대한 관점을 어떻게 보아야 하며, 생명을 예술적으로 승화하는 과정에서 어떤 작용을 할 것인가를 고찰할 것이다. 또한 이러한 문제들을 어떻게 작업에 반영할 수 있는지 연구 작품을 통하여 살펴보고자 한다.
인간이 음식을 취하는 것은 다른 어떤 경험보다 직접적인 자연과의 충만한 관계를 형성하고 경험한다. 음식을 취하는 행위는 단순히 입으로 먹는 것에 그치지 않고, 미각, 후각, 촉각, 청각, 시각의 오감을 모두 동원해 완벽한 경험을 유도한다. 연구자에게 생명성에 대한 사유는 일상생활에서 접하는 식재료에서 시작된다. 이는 개별 작품 분석을 통해 구체적으로 다루고자 한다. 대부분 일상생활에서 특별한 의식 없이 진행되는 먹는 행위에서 더 나아가 유희의 과정으로의 먹는 행위, 그리고 살기 위하여 먹는 행위 등 인간과 자연의 관계에 대해 다양한 의미를 부여하게 되었고, 생명체를 취하는 태도들을 인식하게 되었다. 이러한 일상의 삶 안에서 겪는 미세한 감각의 변화가 본 연구자의 예술적 표현의 중요한 요소가 되었다.
연구 작품에 사용되는 음식 재료, 즉 동물에 대한 관점을 피터 싱어의 생명 윤리에 대한 시선과 함께 작품을 분석하고자 한다. 또한 삶과 일상을 통해 생명에 대한 감성적 부분을 조형적으로 표현하고자 한다. 이는 사회와 관습 그리고 이념들을 받아들일 수 있는 동시대 예술이다. 연구자는 음식 재료 오브제와 일상에서의 사물에 초점을 맞추어 삶을 바라보고자 하였으며, 살아있었지만 죽게 된 생명성에 대한 연구자의 태도를 오브제로 재현되는 과정을 통해 미술의 영역으로 확장하고자 한다.

영어초록

This study aims to review on the return to avarice, vestige of violence and vitality implicit in food objects focusing on my works. Considering food ingredient as a subject matter of which is able to recognize vitality, I would like to present avarice and violence of human through study works in this study. I regard food ingredient as the easiest material to recognize vitality and developed it based on avarice and violence implicit in human. Food objects were used as a symbolic life that were slaughtered, farmed and collected by violence and avarice. I would like to examine inequality of the weak within social structure, sublimity in vitality of animal that has been exploited as economic product and complementary relationship between ecology and women behind food object on the perspective of naturalism within social structure beyond anthropocentric vision.
For this purpose, I examine the significance of art history that food object retains for art expression as a theoretical background of art works and review on object in surrealism work. The object connects with my daily life directly and begins as a specific through diverse imaginary and presented as a symbolic significance. Review on object extends to avarice of human intrinsic in food ingredient as an object. I raise a question based upon activities that mass-produced food ingredients are being in uninhibited use without any consideration as life within capitalist society. I use them as a material of artwork through connecting my private sentiment and my personal effects. I regard the authority implicit in the preserve of women such as handbag and high-heels are the fruit of the convention on women and a patriarchal system which were tamed by social structure. Women’s prestige and fashion are related to handbag, high heels and clothes.
I reflect vitality-based reinterpretation of visual image on study artworks based on philosophic thought of sensationalism, which has lasted from Aristoteles untilnow. This means reinterpretation of sensuous image deviated from rational limitation, furthermore, rather psychological, physical and sensual visualization of sensuously recognized images than representation of object. On this wise, I would like to review art works that are completed based on error of sense and internal change through considering sensuously recognized target rationally.
This study demonstrates how sense essentially exists and works in the process of artistic sublimation, also presents how it will be able to be reflected on artwork. Human develops full relationship directly with nature through eating food than any other experiences. Taking food is not mere a eating food but an activity that induces complete experience through mobilizing five senses of taste, smell, touch, hearing, vision. And we ultimately recognize the existence of life through ‘sense’. Such thoughts on vitality initiated from food ingredient in my daily life. I will treat it through analyzing my individual artworks in concrete way.
By extension from eating food without any awareness in daily life, I give significance on it as a process of play, eating for survival and relationship between human and nature, and recognized attitudes toward diverse lives. Such change of delicate sense within daily life is a crucial element of artistic expression.
Vision tries to discover external reality. However, what appeared to the human eyes is not always absolute. This study attempts to emphasize on sublimation of life and nature. I would like to review how to set perspective up on unrecognizable minute life and how lives function in the process of artistic sublimation. Additionally, I would like to examine these issues on art works how reflect through my art works.
My ‘sense’ always occurs error between the perspectives of ‘nobility of life’ as a common recognition and ‘dead life’ as food on the table. This is in the same reason of confusion between reason and emotion in reality, which could be variable by lapse of time that memory and daily life were saved in different condition. Also, vestige of childhood memory and emotion of impact between reason and perception could are able to be materials of artwork. Therefore, I would like to gratify this curiosity. Vitality within ‘dead food ingredient’ can become a motif and instinctive energy, which creates new formative expression. Our surrounding is filled with everyday object and lives, which are able to establish relationships, that are able to be composed in a space centering on me.
In conclusion, I would like to express nobility of life, and human’s attitude toward nature and its sublimation through study artworks. Furthermore, I attempt to express internal violence on study artworks through pursuing a deviation from everyday of food ingredient. Disparate form on artworks is the connection between dissolution of life in food ingredient and its fantasy of mine. This is the aspect of art within daily life and is contemporary art that will be able to extend to formative expression through adopting society, custom and ideology. I would like to see life focusing on object, and extend my attitude toward vitality what was live but is dead to realm of art through the process of representation into object.
I have an interest in error of dual sense in daily life. Through such experience, I was able to highlight nobility and sublimation of life and attempt to express them on study artworks. So to speak, I have tried to express not a mere food ingredient but transmigration of life and death continuously in terms of formative aspect of study works. And I have attempted to extend continuous exploration and interpretation of ego subjectively through artworks. Furthermore, I would like to not only review that ecofeminism insists human equality but also extends and presents culture, history and hidden structure of thoughts which justifying discrimination against women and nature focused on human’s violence which are reflected on food ingredient in study works.
