초록

This paper aims at illuminating Coleridge and Wordsworth’s poetic dialogues
with attention to the intense formal experimentation geared toward the
discovery of a modern poetic form that can respond to the changing historical
condition of the contemporary period. The “conversation poem,” which contains
a dialogic context within a seemingly lyrical text signals the Romantic
poets’ unprecedented awareness of isolate selfhood. Through the exploration
of communicative possibilities, romantic writers attempt to reconnect severed
ties between individuals and restore a sense of community. Although many of
the conversation poems ultimately succumb to the impulse toward poetic
authority and renounce dialogic elements in that process, they still display
traces of profound sympathy and solidarity with other human beings.
Especially, Colerdige’s “This Lime-Tree Bower My Prison” shows the fact
that the Romantic attempt to reconcile with the external world is often conditioned
by intersubjective contexts. “Nature” in this poem is represented as an
environment shared between human beings and recognized collectively by
them. Friendly sympathy alters the way in which the poet envisions the mannature
interaction. By crossing the boundaries of the ego, Coleridge simultaneously
achieves the vision of a renewed relationship between human beings and
nature. On the other hand, Wordsworth’s “Ode: Intimations of Immortalit”
consciously departs from the Coleridgean model of the conversation poem and
thereby invents his own poetic mode. This poem presents an internalized conversation,
which functions as a formal reflection of the poem’s content that
bespeaks self-sufficient affirmation. Wordsworth’s completion of the
Romantic lyric largely eliminates dialogic elements formerly contained in the
conversation poem. This shift in the formal structure, in turn, expresses
Wordsworth’s evolving conviction that the individual should discover power
and guidance from within.
