임진왜란과 피난, 그리고 의례: 왕실과 사족의 사례를 중심으로 (The Imjin War, Displacement, and Rituals: Focusing on the Cases of the Royal Court and the Gentry)

초록

조선시대 왕실과 사족의 의례는 16세기 후반부터 본격화되었고 18세기 후반에 이르면 이론적 집대성을 이루게 된다. 임진왜란 발생 전후에 해당하는 15~16세기는 예제를 도입하고 연구하면서 예학적 기반을 다져가던 시기였다.
본 연구에서는 임진왜란기 피난 과정에서 왕실과 사족이 경험했던 상ㆍ제례의 공통점과 차이점을 정리하면서, 전쟁 경험이 조선의 예제 발전과정에 어떤 영향을 주었는지에 관한 검토를 시도하였다. 왕실은 파천하면서 머무르는 지역마다 종묘 신주도 임시로 봉안했으며, 상시에 시행하던 의례를 어떻게 권도로 대처할 것인가에 대해 고민하였다. 사족층의 일부 피난 백성들 역시 상례나 제례에 있어서 비슷한 행동 양상을 보였음을 피난기 일기자료를 통해 확인할 수 있었다.
선조실록 에 기록된 바에 따르면, 선조가 환도하면서 전란 중임에도 백성 중에 상복입은 자가 드물다는 문제를 지적하며 국가 윤리기강의 문란을 우려하였다. 하지만 조정의 우려와는 달리, 사족의 피난일기를 통해 실제 백성들로서는 처한 상황에서 최대한 예를 다하려 노력했던 모습을 확인할 수 있다. 따라서 전란기에 국가의 예제가 전체적으로 문란해졌다고 일반화할 수 없으며, 오히려 우리는 왕실과 사족이 모두 예를 다하려는 공통적 모습을 보였던 사실에 주목해야 할 것이다.
전란의 경험은 이후 의례적 변통이 필요한 상황에서의 행동방침을 마련해주기도 하였다. 조선의 왕실이나 사족들은 전란은 물론 기근이나 전염병, 도변으로 인해 의례의 변통이 필요한 다양한 상황과 맞닥뜨리면서 여러 경험을 축적했다. 그리고 이러한 내용은 후대에 정리된 사족의 예서는 물론 국가에서 간행한 의례서에도 일부 기재되었다. 이는 다양한 상황에 대처하는 경험의 축적, 그리고 예학 이해의 성숙이 융합된 결과물이라고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

The royal court and the gentry of the Joseon Dynasty began implementing formal rituals in earnest during the late 16th century, achieving theoretical consolidation by the late 18th century. The 15th and 16th centuries, particularly surrounding the period of the Imjin War, marked a time when the introduction and study of ritual systems laid the foundation for Joseon’s ritual studies.
This study attempts to provide a macroscopic overview of the similarities and differences between the royal court and the gentry in the practice of mourning and ancestral rites during their displacement in the Imjin War. It also offers a preliminary examination of how the wartime experience influenced the development of Joseon’s ritual systems. The royal court temporarily enshrined the royal ancestral tablets at various locations during their flight and deliberated on how to adaptively perform rituals usually conducted under normal circumstances. Similarly, some displaced members of the gentry exhibited comparable behavioral patterns in mourning and ancestral rites, as evidenced by wartime diary records.
However, according to records in the Annals of King Seonjo (Seonjo Sillok), King Seonjo expressed concern over the lax state of national moral discipline during his return to the capital, pointing out the scarcity of people wearing mourning attire among the populace despite the ongoing war. Yet, based on the wartime diaries of the gentry, it is evident that the people made every effort to uphold rituals to the best of their ability, given their circumstances. Therefore, it cannot be generalized that the nation’s rituals were entirely neglected during the war. Instead, greater attention should be paid to the shared efforts of both the royal court and the gentry to uphold ceremonial propriety during the crisis.
The wartime experience also helped establish guidelines for adapting rituals to extraordinary circumstances. The royal court and gentry of Joseon accumulated various experiences in adapting rituals, not only during wartime but also in situations such as famine, epidemics, and stealing. These experiences were later incorporated into ritual books compiled by the gentry and state-published ritual manuals. This reflects the combined outcome of accumulated practical experiences in diverse situations and the maturity of ritual studies and understanding.
