‘보문산을 부채로 가리고 다닌 우암’ 전설의 유형과 지역 배경 (ypes of Legend and Geographical Background of ‘Uam Covers Mt. Bomun with Fan’)

초록

이 글은 우암 송시열(1607-1689) 전설 가운데 대전을 배경으로 전승되는 하나의 예를 대상으로 지역전설성을 고찰한 것이다. 우선, 위 전설의 ‘유형’부터 주목했다. 위 전설의 유형은 ‘중심형’과 ‘주변형’으로 구분되고, 이 가운데 중심형은 ‘기본형’과 ‘변이형’으로 나뉘고 있음을 밝혔다. 그리고 어느 유형이든 대전을 전승권으로 하고 있음에서 공통이란 사실도 확인했다. 나아가, 위 전설의 ‘소지역’별 유형을 주목하였다. 여기에서 소지역의 개별적인 지역적 특징이 어떻게 전설의 소지역 유형과 관련되어 있는지에 유의하여 살펴보았다. 이러한 전설 작품과 지역성에 대한 이해에 더하여, 우암이 대전에 토착하게 된 과정을 주목함으로써 우암 전설이 대전에서 발생될 수 있었던 요인에 대한 이해의 시야를 넓혀보고자 했다. 또한 이에 더하여, 우암이 ‘부채로 무엇을 가리고 다녔다’는 일화가 발생된 이유를 우암 개인의 신체적 특징을 주목하여 찾아보고자 했다. 이와 관련, 우암이 ‘부채로 무엇을 가리고 다닌’ 행동이 있었고 그것이 사람들의 눈에 과장되게 인식됨으로써 전설로의 비약적 상상이 이루어졌다고 보았다. 여기에서 전설적 비약이 이루어진 데에는 우암이 지닌 사회적 ‘명망’이 중요했다고 보았다. 더 나아가, 위 전설의 형성에 영향을 준 또 다른 측면을 이해하기 위해서는 우암이란 인물이 지닌 ‘지배적인 이미지’를 이해할 필요가 있다고 보았다. 원리주의적 ‘주자학자’이자 ‘남녀유별’을 대단히 중시하는 ‘예학자’로서의 우암의 인물상이 위 ‘부채로 무엇을 가리고 다니는 우암’ 전설의 형성에 영향을 주었다고 보았다. 끝으로 위 전설에는 당시대의 심각한 정치사적 이면과 함께 그로써 지역사회에 미친 파장도 함께 스며있다는 점에 대해서도 관심을 기울여 보았다.

영어초록

This study explores the characteristics of local legends by illustrating one of the legends on Uam(우암) Siyeol Song (송시열:607-1689), which handed down by tradition in Daejeon. First of all, the ‘type’ of the legend was investigated, classified into ‘prototype’ and ‘type of surroundings’. In specific, ‘prototype’ was indentified to be subdivided as into ‘type of base’ and ‘type of variation’. Also, regardless of its type, the legends were discovered to belong to the same geographic scope―they were currented in Daejeon. Moreover, according to each ‘local area’, details of type were investigated. In specific, the relationship between geographical attributes of the individual local area and the type of the local area where the legend was originated was carefully explored. On top of the understanding legend work and geographical attributes, this study focused on the reasons why Uam’s legend could occur in Daejeon by covering procedures how he became to stay and live in Daejeon to promote broad knowledge of Uam’s legend. In addition, this study focused on the reason why Uam’s anecdote of ‘He went around by covering something with his fan’ was made by looking closely into his physical trait. As a result, this study found out that there was Uam’s behavior of ‘covering something with fan’ and it was exaggerated by people, leading to a legend created through using dramatic imagination by people. Also, this study pointed out that the dramatic imagination was credited with Uam’s ‘reputation’ in the society. A further study of Uam was promoted to understand other perspectives which influenced to create the legend, focusing on seeking for ‘dominant image’ that Uam possessed as a great figure. His reputation and image were believed to influence the creation of his legend of ‘covering something with fan’ as he was a fundamental ‘neo-Confucians’ and ‘Confucians’ who put a high value on ‘distinction between the sexes’. In conclusion, a grave political situation of the times behind the legend and its impact to local society were also of interest in this study.
