글로벌 시대의 과학기술과 자본, 그리고 상상력 (Technology, Capital, and Imagination in the Global Times)

초록

인간은 이 세상에 태어나는 순간부터 타자와 관련하여 일정한 불안을 느끼며 살 아왔다. 근대 이전에는 인간은 자신의 연약함으로 인해 타자, 그것도 절대타자에 의존하는 삶을 꾸려왔다. 그래서 전근대인은 이 타자에 대한 분리불안을 겪었다. 그렇지만 이 불안은 인간의 무력함과 무주체화를 낳았다. 그래서 근대 계몽적 인간은 자신의 자립성을 확보하기 위해 타자를 부정하는 삶으로 나아갔다. 그렇지만 근대인은 이로부터 타자에 예속될까봐 우려하는 융합불안을 겪기 시작하였다. 그리고 이 불안은 현대인으로 하여금 마침내 또 다른 불안에 휩싸이게 만들고 있다. 즉 현대인은 글로벌 자본이 지배하는 무한경쟁 시대를 맞이하여 융합불안 속에서 서로를 부정하는 삶에 지친 나머지 자기 속으로 들어가 자기하고만 대화하는, 즉 상상된 타자하고만 대화하려는 또 하나의 분리불안을 겪고 있다. 그런데 현대인의 이런 분리불안은 인공지능과 결합된 타자의 출현, 즉 알파고와 같은 존재의 출현과 더불어 더욱 더 심해질 수 있다. 현실의 타자보다 상상 속의 타자에 관계하려는, 그래서 자기놀이에만 집착하는 현대인은 지능을 지닌 인공적 타자에 점점 더 매료될 수 있다. 그래서 자본가는 자신의 이윤증식을 위해 탁월한 상상력을 지닌 천재적 과학기술자와 결합하여 문화산업, 놀이산업, 소비산업을 더욱 더 확장할 수 있다. 이로 인해 현대인은 인공적 타자를 소비하지 않으면 안 되는 수동적 주체가 되어버릴 수도 있다. 바로 이 과정에서 현대인은 자기가 자기에게 예속되는, 그래서 망상증을 겪으며 고립과 우울과 자살로 이어지는 상황으로 점점 더 내몰릴 수도 있다. 우리는 이와 같은 비극을 극복하기 위해서는 기억을 머금은 몸을 통해 현실 타자를 만나는 생활공동체를 제대로 마련해야 한다. 이 길은 각 지역의 일정한 장소에서 살아가는 생활인들이 저마다 주체가 되어 상상력의 공감적 활동을 활성화하고 이를 통해 연대적 삶을 구축할 때 가능하다. 이처럼 상상된 타자 만들기를 통해 자본증식을 극대화하는 현대 놀이산업에 작동하는 상상력의 전쟁을 넘어서기 위해서는 우리는 상상력의 창의 능력 못지않게 공감 능력도 길러내야 한다. 우리는 생활세계에 기초하여 상상력의 공감적 연대의 길을 마련함으로써 오늘의 우리들의 삶을 지배하는 추상의 폭력, 즉 물건을 지배하는 화폐의 추상성, 가상세계를 누비는 인공언어의 추상성, 인간에 도전하는 인공지능 기계의 추상성이 낳는 폭력을 극복해야 한다. 이럴 경우에만 우리는 비로소 서로가 자율성을 유지하면서 공생하는 길을 마련할 수 있으며, 분리불안과 더불어 망상증에 빠져드는 현대적 주체를 구해낼 수 있다.

영어초록

Humans have lived in feeling a certain anxiety about the others from the moment of birth to the world. In the pre-modern society, humans have lived with depending on the absolute Other because of his frailty. So the premodern have suffered the ‘separation anxiety’ about the others. However, this anxiety has caused the loss of the human subjectivity. Because of this, modern humans ever went to the life to negate the others in order to ensure their independence. But modern people began to undergo the ‘mergence anxiety’ with being afraid of being subjected to the other. And this anxiety is causing the making of them finally engulfed another anxiety. Namely, contemporary humans were tired of the life to negate each other with the ‘mergence anxiety’ in the infinite competition era dominated by the global capital. And so, they are experiencing another ‘separation anxiety’ talking only with the imagined others. But this separation anxiety of them can be getting worse with the emergence of others, such as combined with artificial intelligence, namely alpha. So capitalists can be combined with ingenious scientists and engineers with exceptional imagination for their own profit growth, and they can expand cultural industries, amusement industries, consumer industries. Contemporary humans can degenerate into a passive subject that must consume the artificial others owing to this social conditions. In this very process, they can be subjected to themselves, so led to the isolation, depression, and suicide with undergoing the paranoia. We have to build the living community meeting the others through the body with memory in order to overcome them. It is possible when those who are living in the places of the local areas act as subjects, and they invoke the empathic activities and make the life of solidarity with them. We must overcome the war of the imagination working in the contemporary game industry maximizing capital growth by making the imagined others. To do so, we must foster not only the creative skills of imagination, but also the sympathy skills. We must overcome the violence of abstraction that dominates our lives today, namely the violence of abstraction of the currency dominating things, abstraction of the artificial language dominating virtual world, and abstraction of the artificial intelligence machines challenging the human with laying the path of empathic solidarity of the imagination based on the local people’s living world. In so doing, we can finally make a way for us to live autonomously and coexist with each other, and salvage a contemporary subjects falling into the paranoia with the ‘separation anxiety’.
