이용악과 러시아 연해주, 그리고 국경의 감각 (Lee Yong-ak's Relation to Yunhaju, Russia and His Sense of the Border Line)

초록

함경북도 鏡城에서 출생하고, 그 북쪽으로 이동하는 유이민에 주목한 이용악은 ‘북방의 시인’이다. 이용악의 시는 만주를 배경으로 유랑하는 민족 수난의 서사를 형상화 한 민족시의 전형으로 평가되어 왔다.
본고는 이용악의 생애와 시에서 러시아 연해주라는, 만주와는 다른 북방으로서의 장소성을 밝히고자 했다. 이용악에게 만주가 관찰의 장소였다면, 연해주는 그의 가족이 생계를 위해 넘나들었던 생활의 현장이었다. 연해주는 그의 할아버지 때부터 그의 아버지와 어머니가 장사다니던 곳이었다. 이용악도 어렸을 때 어머니의 등에 업혀 연해주를 다녔고, 그의 아버지는 그 장삿길에서 죽었다. 그의 외갓집과 큰집, 일가친척도 러시아에 살았다. 이용악이 자주 호명한 블라디보스토크는 동양 굴지의 국제도시이자 상공업 중심지, ‘동양의 서양’, 모던한 문화 예술의 메카였다. 그의 형은 이런 러시아를 보헤미안처럼 방랑하다 죽었다. 러시아 연해주는 이용악 가족사의 여러 사연과 기억이 쌓인 장소이자 그리운 곳이었다. 이 복잡한 기억이 그에게 시를 쓰게 했다.
그의 부모는 밀수꾼이었기 때문에 몰래 넘어야 했던 국경은 공포와 치욕, 죽음의 장소였다. 부모의 등에 업혀 숨죽이며 넘나들었던 국경의 감각은 그의 신체에 트라우마로 새겨졌다. 동시에 국경을 돌파하고 돌진하는 모험의 언어와 이미지는 이용악 시의 동력이 되었다. 국경에 대한 예민한 감수성은 해방 후 ‘38도선’을 누구보다 민감하게 포착하였으며, 이후 단독정부 반대와 통일정부 수립, 문화공작대 활동에 앞장서게 되는 감각적 동인이 되었다.
조선과 만주가 일본제국의 안이었다면 연해주는 식민제국의 바깥을 상상케 하는 한국문학장의 또 다른 장소였다.

영어초록

Lee Yong-ak has been known as 'a poet of northern district', because he was born at Kyung-sung, Ham-buk Province and gave consistent poetic attention to the drifting and emigrant persons in the north of his hometown. His poems embodied the sufferings of Korean people wandering around Manchuria and were evaluated as typical Korean poems.
This paper aims to investigate Lee Yong-ak's life and the meaning of Yunhaju as a poetic place in his works. To Lee Yong-ak, Manchuria was an observing place over the human world, but Yunhaju was an actual living place where his family had to go and come for livelihood. Not only his grandfather but also his parents engaged in business here and there in Yunhaju. In his childhood Lee also wandered about Yunhaju, carried on his mother's back. His father ended his life in the course of business trip. Lee's relatives containing those on the maternal line also lived in Russia.
Vladivostok, being so often remarked by Lee, was a leading international city which was called the center of commerce and industry in the Orient.
The city also had other nick-names such as the Western city in the Eastern world and the mecca of modern culture and art. Because of such features, Vladivostok became an escaping place for romantic youths of colonial Korea. Lee's elder brother, one of the romantic youths, also lived a bohemian life wandering in the far eastern Russia. Yunhaju of Russia was closely related to the many stories and various memory of Lee's family history, which led him to write poems.
Lee Yong-ak's parents made their living by smuggling, and unavoidably had to cross the border line secretly. So, to them, the border was a place of horror, dishonor and death. Carried on his mother's back, Lee also had to go and come across the border taking breaths, the experience of which left a trauma in his body. On the other hand, the languages and images stemmed from the adventures of breaking through the border became the prime motor of Lee's writing poems. His keen sensibilities on the border caused him to put an unusual focus on the 38th Parallel, and became a motive for his positive political and cultural activities like opposing the single government, supporting the establishment of a unified government and joining in the Group of Culture Craftsman. Josun and Manchuria were confined in the Japanese imperialism, but Yunhaju was a special place for the Korean literary field because it could help to imagine an another world outside the Japanese imperialism.
