초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine how to establish the relationships between 'religion and politics', and 'religion and the state' in contemporary Korea. It is based on the assumption that the establishment of their relations has not been desirable. In order to foster understanding of the discussion, its proceeding facets must be examined and analyzed.
Initially, the paper will define and distinguish 'religion and the state' from religious policy and 'religion and politics' from the administration of religious affairs to promote a solution to the problems regarding relations between religion, politics, and the state in contemporary Korea. This approach looks at the issue from a different perspective and focuses on the fundamental aspects of the matter. Religious policy is established within legalities, including the constitution, which is the foundation of religious policy. The administration of religious affairs supports the religious groups and acts to manage based on the policy of religion by the government.
The second chapter deals with the existing research and various theories and opinions about the relationships between 'religion and politics', and between 'religion and the state'. This will include the propositions in existing research which have investigated issues related to 'religion and politics', and 'religion and the state'. This will lead to an understanding of the problems presented in the existing research and the corresponding solutions suggested.
The third chapter focuses on the investigation of the characteristics of the current laws and administration concerning the issues of the relationship between 'religion and politics' in order to reestablish a desirable relationship. It concentrates on the danger of the close ties between religion and politics, where certain religious groups receive strong support from the Ministry of Culture & Tourism.
The fourth chapter deals with 'religion and the state' to observe the problems which are basic and more fundamental than other matters. It concentrates on the observation of the designated Christian and Buddhist holidays and the traditional Buddhist temples preservation law and the Confucian temples property law. This leads to a specific understanding of the problem of how national religious policy plays a part in supporting religions and controlling which religions receive more benefits.
Until now more attention was paid to freedom of religion and the separation of religion and politics under the topic of 'religion and politics' and 'religion and the state' in contemporary Korea. In the future, national religious policy and the administration of religious affairs should focus on not only freedom of religion but also equality among religions in Korea.
