시선의 권력, 그리고 여성관객 (The Power of Eyes, and Female Spectator)

초록

실사영화나 애니메이션과 같은 영상 매체에서 직접적이고 물리적인 폭력의 대상으로 여성을 표현하는 경우는 특정 장르에 제한하여 나타난다. 그렇지만 시각 이미지의 세계에서 폭력성의 문제는 매우 광범위하며 대부분 교묘하게 은폐되어 있다. 이는 시선의 주체이자 관찰자의 역할을 남성으로 상정하고 대상화된 여성을 분리하여 놓는 것으로부터 시작한다. 여기에는 여성과 남성, 대상과 주체라는 견고한 이분법이 작동하는데 주체의 시선과 대상의 응시, 순환되는 시선의 얽힘과 대타자의 개념으로도 해소되지 않는 유형의 권력이 존재함을 의미한다. 시선의 권력은 대상에 가해지는 교묘한 폭력 개념을 포함하므로 주목하여야 한다. 시대의 흐름에 따라 생물학적 성과 사회적으로 구성된 젠더가 반드시 일치하지 않음은 상식이 되어가고 있다. 그렇지만 실제 인간 사회의 구조적 문제에 얽혀 혼돈과 갈등은 심화되고 있다. 남성 중심의 시선을 논함에 있어 관음증과 거세공포, 그리고 또 다른 왜곡인 절시증과 숭배는 젠더 이슈의 핵심이지만 현실 인간의 문제를 떼어내어 바라보는 것은 쉽지 않다. 본 연구는 현실 세계의 생물학적 성 구분에 따른 갈등구조를 직접적으로 해결하기 위한 시도가 아님을 분명히 한다. 또한 분열적이고 유동적인 여성관객의 정체성을 영화매체 자체의 구조적 특성에서 비롯된 것이며 보다 진전된 논의가 필요하다고 보았다. 이러한 문제는 다수의 영상 매체에서 대안으로 제시하는 것처럼 주체와 대상의 자리에 놓인 남성과 여성을 단순히 교체하는 것만으로는 해결할 수 없다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 매체 기술의 발전이 가져온 비선형적 진행이 전통적 감상 방식을 흔드는 요인이 되어 서사의 지연과 사색하는 관객이 등장함으로써 매체의 변화를 가져온다는 로라 멀비(Laura Mulvey)의 개념을 공유하고 있다.

영어초록

In visual media, such as Live Action Films and animations, the expression of women as the object of direct and physical violence is limited only to specific genres. However, in the world of visual image, violence is very extensive and mostly concealed in a subtle manner. The subtle concealment begins with setting the subject of vision as and giving the role of an observer to a man and separating an objectified woman. The solid dichotomy that separates women from men and the objects from the subjects is involved, which means that the presence of the type of power that is not resolved even by the vision of the subject, the gaze at the object, the entanglement of visions, and the concept of the big other. Attention should be paid to the power of the vision, because it includes the concept of the subtle violence that is given to an object. As time goes by, it is now commonly known that the biological sex is not always the same as the socially formed gender. However, the confusion and conflict related to the sex and gender are increasing as the issues are entangled with the structural problems of the human society. In the discussion of man-centered vision, voyeurism, castration fear, and other types of distortion, scopophilia and worship, are the essence of the gender issue. However, it is difficult to view the matters by separating the realistic human problems. It is clearly stated here that the present study is not an attempt to directly resolve the conflict structure based on the biological sex classification in the real world. The disruptive and changeable identity of female audience was considered as the result of the intrinsic structural characteristics of movies as a media, and further discussion is needed in this regard. The problem may not be resolved simply by exchanging the positions of the subject and the object between men and women, as suggested as an alternative in many visual media. The present study shares the concept proposed by Mulvey that the nonlinear progress, caused by the development of the media technology, shakes the traditional viewing method and that the retardation of the narrative and the appearance of meditating audience bring about a change in the media.
