위대한 만남 그리고 대한민국 (The Great Encounters and the Republic of Korea)

초록

‘만남’을 어떻게 설명할 것인가. 그 철학적 배경을 서구의 2원론과 동양의시대론으로 밝히고, 그리고 역사에서 끊임없이 보는 ‘맞수’와 구분했다. ‘위대한 만남’의 정의는 시너지 효과를 나타내는 승수로 규정하고, 우리 역사에서 4 번의 이 ‘위대한 만남’이 있어 오늘의 세계 10대 경제대국 대한민국이 성취되었음을 설명한다. 그 ‘위대한 만남’은 고대와 중세 그리고 현대로 이어져 오며역사적 에포크 epoch를 만들어 낸다.
고대는 김춘추와 김유신의 만남으로써, 3국을 통일하고, 당군(唐軍)을 한반도에서 완전히 몰아내고, 마침내 3국통일의 한민족국가의 정체성을 만들어낸다. 이때부터 한반도는 하나의 국가, 하나의 민족, 하나의 문화정체성을 갖는오늘의 대한민국의 시원이 된다. 서기 7세기 AD 625년 매소성(買肖城) 전투에서 당나라 군대가 완전히 패퇴해 요동으로 물러나면서 이다.
중세는 류성룡과 이순신의 만남으로써 이미 임계점에 도달해 있던 조선을역사상 가장 치열했던 전쟁에서 구해낸다. 두 위인의 만남의 승수(乘數)효과는다른 조신들과 2가지 차이에서 이루어진다. 하나는 충신과 충성의 구분에서고, 다른 하나는 권력과 이데올로기의 분리에서다. 충신은 임금에 대한 몸바침이고동시에 왕권과 왕조에 대한 헌신이다. 그러나 충성은 왕이며 사람에 대한 충성이 아니라 백성과 나라에 대한 충성이다. 전자가 ‘영혼이 없는 충성’이라면 후자는 ‘영혼이 살아있는 충성’이다. 권력과 이데올로기의 분리는 권력은 자기 지위에서 임무를 수행하고 책임을 완수하는 수단으로서의 권력이지만, 이데올로기는 공산주의 공산당, 혹은 뭇 종교들에서 보듯이, 그 이념 그 종교에 몸과 마음을 바쳐야 하는 목적이다. 조선에서의 관리들은 자기 지위에서 나오는 권력자체를 일하기 위한 수단이 아니라 이데올로기, 이념처럼 목적으로 삼았다. 분리해 사고하고 일할 줄을 몰랐다.
현대의 이승만과 박정희 － 이 대통령은 미국을 만나 자유민주주의 시장경제 인권과 개인의 자유를 이 땅에 도입하고 정착시켜, 오늘의 자유민주공화국대한민국이 됐다. 박 대통령은 당시로서는 거의 불가능했던 일본의 산업화를본받아 성공시켜, 오늘의 제조업, 중화학공업의 세계적인 국가를 일구어냈다.

영어초록

How are we to explain great encounters in history? This article addresses this question with the Western theory of dualism and the Eastern views of time. Great encounters discussed here are different from the match of rivals often witnessed in history. Great encounters are defined as the coming together of two different characters whose synergic combination brought about victorious consequences in history. In Korean history, four great encounters took place, which made the Republic of Korean into the eleventh largest economy in the world today. The four great encounters in early, medieval, and modern Korea were truly epoch-making events in history.
In early Korea, the encounter between Kim Chunchu (金春秋, 603-661) and Kim Yusin (金庾信, 595-673) made possible the rise of the Unified Shilla. After unification, they drove out the Tang forces and laid the foundation of the Korean national identity. Ever since the Korean peninsula would become the territory of one nation-state with the unity of national consciousness, which should be considered the origins of the Republic of Korea. It all began when the Tang forces were defeated in the Battle of Maesoseong(買肖城) and returned to the Liaodong peninsula in 625.
The encounter between Ryu Seong-ryong and Yi Sunsin in the medieval period saved a faltering Joseon from the most ferocious war ever fought in the whole history of Korea up to that point.
The great encounter with synergic effects between the two was fundamentally different from cases of other ministers in two important points. On the one hand it was the difference in terms of loyal ministers and loyalty itself; on the other, it was in different terms of power and ideology. Loyal ministers were loyal toward their kings and devoted themselves to the royal authority and the dynasty. The kind of loyalty Ryu and Yi demonstrated was not toward the person of the king but toward the people and their country. The divide between power and ideology was also important: power is the only means by which ministers perform their missions and complete their tasks; ideology, on the other hand, is the end for which people sacrifice their lives, as observed in cases of political extremists and religious fanatics. Joseon ministers regarded their powers not as the means by which they perform their roles and responsibilities, but as the end in itself.
In modern times, Rhee Syngman encountered the United States of America and laid the foundation of liberal democracy based on market economy, the basic liberties, and human rights. Park Chung-hee adopted the Japanese model of industrialization and constructed a new Korea that is a major manufacturing country with the advanced heavy chemical industry.
