Ground, Norm and Reform: Engaging with Berkouwer’s View on the Apostolicity of the Church

Apostolicity, one of the four attributes of the church, is the central subject that the paper investigates. Concerning apostolicity, the issue of normativity comes to the fore, which has to do with the distinct apostolic past and norm of the church. It signifies that apostolicity does not only concern the past, but also the present and the future of the church. Apostolicity is also closely connected with several significant ecclesiological subjects such as truth, tradition, office, authority and empowerment. This paper engages with the subject by taking into consideration the ecclesiological account of a Dutch Reformed theologian Gerrit Cornelis Berkouwer (1903-1996) as presented in De Kerk II (1972).
His understanding of apostolicity, together with several related elements, is analysed and implemented for further theological consideration. The theological reflection critically applies Berkouwer’s correlative approach and his core ecclesiological perspective on the subject, proceeds with linking apostolicity with the concept of concurrence, and discusses extended subjects such as contextualisation, reform, office and authority in connection with apostolicity.
