趙涑의 <老樹捿鵲>과 <古梅瑞鵲>에 대한 樣式的 比較 考察 (A Comparative Consideration of the Style of and by Cho Sok(趙涑))

초록

17세기를 대표하는 사인화가인 滄江 趙涑(1595년∼1668년)은 시서화 삼절이자 介潔한 선비로 알려져 있다. 그는 그림에 있어서 산수, 묵매, 화조 등이 여러 점 남아 있는데, 그중에 특히 수묵화조화로 유명하다. 그림을 技藝로 여겼던 조선 중기의 많은 사인화가들이 그렇듯이, 趙涑은 그의 작품에 落款를 남기지 않은 것으로 전해진다. 이러한 이유로 그의 작품으로 전해지는 수묵화조화는 진적을 명확하게 밝히기가 매우 어렵고, 화풍도 다른 것들이 뒤섞여 있어 혼란을 초래하는 경우가 종종 있다. 특히 그의 작품으로 알려진 국립중앙박물관 소장의 <老樹捿鵲>과 간송미술관 소장의 <古梅瑞鵲>은 화풍의 상이함에도 불구하고, 두 점 모두가 趙涑의 대표작이자 중기 水墨寫意花鳥畵의 뛰어난 걸작으로 말해지고 있다.
그러나 이 두 작품은 모두 조선 중기의 시대적 특성과 뛰어난 작품성을 지니고 있는 수묵화조화임은 분명하나, 자못 두 그림에 나타나는 공간 인식, 대상에 대한 인식, 용필법, 용묵법, 전체적인 인상 등에서 상이한 점이 많아 두 작품을 모두 趙涑의 진적으로 판단하기는 어려운 부분이 존재한다. 간단히 말해 <老樹捿鵲>은 수묵을 다루는 능력과 묘사력이 매우 뛰어나면서, 중국 明代 궁정화가였던 林良(15세기 활동)의 화조화의 모습이 크게 나타나는 반면에, <古梅瑞鵲>은 기술적 능숙함보다는 사의성이 강하게 드러나면서 조선 중기의 고유색을 짙게 드러내고 있어 분명한 화풍상의 차이를 보여준다. 그럼에도 불구하고 현재 이 두 작품은 명확한 검증이 시도되지 않은 채, 작품의 질이 우수하고 중기의 시대성을 지닌 사의화풍의 수묵화조화이며, 당시에 趙涑이 영모와 매화를 잘 그렸다는 점에서 그의 진적인양 말해지고 있다.
이에 이 글은 趙涑의 대표적인 작품으로 전해지는 국립중앙박물관 소장 <老樹捿鵲>과 간송미술관 소장 <古梅瑞鵲>에 대한 양식 비교를 통해서 우리가 현재 지니고 있는 趙涑의 화풍에 대한 모호한 판단과 평가를 재검토하였다. 그리고 두 작품과 관련하여 중기적 특성을 지닌 여타의 수묵화조화와 趙涑의 전칭작들을 함께 살펴봄으로써, 중기 조선 화단의 수묵화조화의 전통을 새롭게 살펴보고자 하였다. 그래서 결론적으로 작품 분석을 통해 두 작품의 질적 평가에 대한 양식적 근거를 제시하였으며, 이에 따라 <老樹捿鵲>과 <古梅瑞鵲>은 한 화가의 작품일 수 없음을 분명히 밝혔다. 나아가 <老樹捿鵲>는 중국 林良의 작품이거나 이를 방불하게 묘사할 수 있는 숙련된 화가의 작품일 가능성이 크고, <古梅瑞鵲>는 趙涑과 유사한 화풍을 구사한 것으로 알려진 그의 아들 趙之耘의 작품일 가능성이 있음을 밝혔다.

영어초록

A representative scholar painter in the 17th century, Changgang(滄江) Cho Sok(趙涑, 1595~1668) is known as a person with three talents in painting, poetry and calligraphy and a scholar of integrity(介潔). He is particularly known for his flowers and birds ink paintings among his remaining paintings on landscape, plum blossom in ink and flowers and birds. Like many scholar painters in the mid-Joseon Dynasty who considered paintings as arts, it is told that Cho Sok did not leave his signature(落款) on his artworks. Therefore, it is very difficult to clarify the originality of the flowers and birds ink paintings that have been known as his works and often causes chaos since they are in a mixed style with other paintings. In particular, both <Birds in a Tree(老樹捿鵲)> owned by National Museum of Korea and <Magpie on an Old Plum(古梅瑞鵲)> owned by Kansong Art Museum, known to be painted by Cho Sok, are called major pieces of Cho Sok and brilliant masterpieces of flowers and birds ink painting in the scholar painter’s painting style in the mid-Joseon Dynasty.
However, while the two works are definite flowers and birds ink paintings in the scholar painter’s painting style with the characteristics of the times in the mid-Joseon Dynasty and high quality, it is clearly not easy to determine both works as being painted by Cho Sok since there are many differences in recognition on space and objects, technique for using brush, technique for using ink and overall impression of the two paintings. In short, <Birds in a Tree(老樹捿鵲)>has high technical and descriptive skills of ink paintings, using the style of the flowers and birds paintings by court painter Liang Lin(林良) in the Ming Dynasty(the 15th century). On the other hand, <Magpie on an Old Plum(古梅瑞鵲)>with a strong expression of an artist’s inner world rather than technical proficiency strongly shows the unique colors of the mid-Joseon Dynasty in depicting plum blossoms or birds, which is a clear difference in style. Nevertheless, the two paintings are in high quality and have the characteristics of the mid-Joseon Dynasty even as they are not clearly verified, and are told as if the two are the original works by Cho Sok since they are flowers and birds ink paintings in the style of expression of an artist’s inner world that reflects the contemporary characteristics of the mid-Joseon Dynasty.
This paper reexamined the equivocal judgment and evaluation on the style of Cho Sok based on the detailed comparison of the styles of <Birds in a Tree(老樹捿鵲)> owned by National Museum of Korea and <Magpie on an Old Plum(古梅瑞鵲)> owned by Kansong Art Museum, which are known as the major works by Cho Sok. Furthermore, by reviewing other flowers and birds ink paintings with the characteristics of the mid-Joseon Dynasty and the works that are told to be painted by Cho Sok, although uncertain about the authenticity, this study reviewed the tradition of the flowers and birds ink paintings of the painting community in the mid-Joseon Dynasty. In conclusion, this paper found that <Birds in a Tree(老樹捿鵲)> is highly likely to be painted by Liang Lin of China or a painter who is at an equivalent level, while <Magpie on an Old Plum(古梅瑞鵲)> with the strong characteristics of the mid-Joseon Dynasty can be painted by Cho Sok or his son Cho Jin-woon, who is known to have the almost similar painting style with his father.
