근대 초기 지식의 편집과 중간 유통자에 대한 고찰-이철주(李喆柱)의 『서례편고(西禮便考)』를 중심으로- (Consideration on Edition of the Early Modern Knowledge and Intermediate Distributor-Focusing on Lee Cheolju(李喆柱)'s 『Seoryepyeongo(西禮便考)』-)

초록

이 연구는 이철주의 『서례편고』를 중심으로 근대 초기 서양 예법서의 편집에 관여한 인물과 편집 양상을 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 1909년 광동서관에서 출판된 『서례편고』는 학부 교과서인 『서례수지』(1896․1902)와 유동작의 『교제신례』(1905)에 이어 세 번째로 출판된 서양 예법서이다. 『서례편고』는 앞서 출판된 두 서양 예법서의 목차를 세분화하고 두 책에 없는 새로운 장을 추가하는 등, 기존 예법서를 절충하고 종합하는 방식으로 편집되었다. 이 때문인지 책의 판권면에도 이철주를 저술자나 역술자가 아닌 편집자로 명시하고 있다.
이 점에 착목하여 본 연구에서는 이철주를 기존 지식들을 편집하는 지식의 중간 유통자로 간주하고 이에 대한 적극적인 평가를 시도해보았다. 이철주는 원석, 원석산인, 원석산옹 등의 필명으로 기호흥학회를 비롯한 근대 초 여러 계몽 단체에서 논설과 연설 활동을 한 개신 유학자이자 교육가이다. 뿐만 아니라 그는 『절도백화』와 같은 소화집의 편집자, 『실업소설 부란극림전』과 같은 번역소설의 교열자, 『가정일용보감』과 같은 대중서의 저자로 알려진 인물이기도 하다. 이철주의 글쓰기와 출판 이력에서 『서례편고』는 계몽적인 논설과 단행본 대중 서적의 중간 지점에 위치한다.
학부 발행 교과서로부터 출발한 서양 예법서는 『서례편고』에 와서 절충과 종합의 편집 단계에 이른다. 이는 계몽적인 동시에 흥미를 꾀할 수밖에 없었던 당대 출판 상황의 반영인 동시에 식민지로의 편입을 목전에 둔 교재의 운명과 대중의 욕망이 균열될 가능성을 시사한다. 무엇보다 전통적인 한문 교육을 받은 개신 유학자가 지식의 편집과 유통에 관여한 방식을 통해 근대문학의 주변부에서 조명 받지 못한 인물을 고찰했다는 점에서 의미 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to consider a person who engaged in editing the early modern books of Western etiquette, around 『Seoryepyeongo(西禮便考)』 written by Lee Cheolju(李喆柱). 『Seoryepyeongo』 published by Gwangdong- seogwan(光東書館) in 1909 is the third book of Western etiquette, following 『Seoryesuji(西禮須知)』(1896․1902), a textbook for undergraduates and Yu Dongjak(柳東作)'s 『Gyojesinrye(交際新禮)』(1905). 『Seoryepyeongo』 was a book edited by compromising and integrating the existing books of Western etiquette: it sub-divided the lists of the previously published two books of Western etiquette and added new chapters which both books do not contain. Lee Cheolju, are, therefore, stated as the editor, rather than the author or the translator, in regard to the copyright of this book.
By focusing on this point, this study regarded Lee Cheolju as an intermediate distributor who engaged in editing the existing knowledge and tried to active evaluate him. Lee Cheolju was a reformed Confucian and educator, who conducted editorial and speech activities under the pen names such as Wonseok(圓石), Wonseoksanin(圓石散人), Wonseoksanong(圓石散翁), etc. in the early modern enlightenment groups including Gihoheung Society(畿湖興學會). Moreover, he was also known as the editor of jokebooks such as 『Jeoldobaekhwa(絶倒百話)』, the proofreader of translated novels such as 『Silupsoseol Burangeuklimjeon(實業小說富蘭克林傳)』, and the author of popular books such as 『Gajeongilyongbogam(家庭日用寶鑑). 『Seoryepyeongo』 is positioned at the middle point between enlightening discourses and popular books, on the spectrum of Lee Cheoljus' writing and publication history.
Although the books of Western etiquette began as textbooks issued for undergraduates reached the stage of edition based on compromise and integration, they tended to become popular commercial publications, rather than those for the self-cultivation. This tendency might reflect the contemporary publication circumstance in which publishers should pursue not only enlightenment but also fun. 『Seoryepyeongo』 thus has an implication, in that it verifies the boundary point between textbooks for the self-cultivation and popular commercial publication, on which a crack between educational orientation and the public's desire occurred around 1910. In addition, it could be found that reformed Confucians or intellectuals, who received the traditional Chinese character education, engaged in the edition and distribution of knowledge, by considering a person who was not highlighted, as he was positioned on the margin of the modern literature.
