초록

본고는 崔述(1740-1816)의 『수사고신록』에서 제기한 『사기』 비판을 분석한 것이다. 『수사고신록』은 청대 고증학의 가장 훌륭한 성과의 하나로 공자의 생애 전반에 대한 철저한 고증을 시도한 책이다. 최술이 『수사고신록』에서 진행한 공자의 생애와 역사적 사실에 대한 상세한 고증은 이전의 관점과는 다르고 독창적인 견해가 제시되고 있어, 공자와 『논어』의 연구자에게 많은 시사점을 던져준 것이 사실이다.
최술은 이 『수사고신록』에서 여러 사람들에게 수천 년 동안 불후의 명저로 인식되어온 사마천의 『사기』의 공자관련 事蹟에 대한 무수한 오류들을 변증하고 있다. 특히 공자의 생애를 재구성한 「孔子世家」의 내용을 조목조목 지적하여 『사기』의 허구성을 비판하고 있다. 이렇게 철저한 고증학적 접근에 의한 최술의 『사기』에 대한 비판은 그 자체로도 매우 독창적이고 흥미로울 뿐만 아니라, 이른바 ‘科學的 古史家’로 불리었던 그의 학문방법론과도 깊은 관련이 있어서 우리에게 청대 고증학의 진수를 보여주고 있다. 따라서 본고에서는 최술이 오랜 권위를 누려오던 『사기』의 「공자세가」의 내용을 비판하고 변증하여, 어떠한 결론을 도출하였는지를 구체적으로 검토하였다.
최술은 공자 생애의 전반을 고증한 『수사고신록』의 155개 변증 항목 중, 약30%에 해당하는 48개 조항에서 『사기』의 공자 사적에 관한 오류들을 비판하고 있다. 비판의 내용은 주로 「공자세가」에 치중되어 있고, 허황된 내용의 자의적인 창작 등 치명적인 오류부터, 잘못된 년대 표기 등의 간단한 실수까지 모두가 망라되어 있다. 여기에는 그가 평소에 강조하던 ‘以經爲主’의 변증방법이 동원되고 있다.
그는 겉으로는 공자를 존경하는 척하면서도 속으론 헐뜯고, 제멋대로 견강부회함으로써 공자를 모함하여 자신들의 주장을 펼치려는 전국시대의 楊朱, 墨翟과 莊子 등의 제자백가들의 주장을 부정하고 공자의 참 모습을 그려내려 했다. 이천여 년 동안 참과 거짓이 뒤섞여 있는 공자에 대한 허상들을 과학적으로 변증하는 것이, 바로 그가 평생 동안 추구해온 고증학의 목표였다. 이를 실현하기 위해서는, 허황된 주장을 그대로 수용하여 채록한 『사기』 「공자세가」의 공자사적 오류에 대한 철저한 비판과 고증이 필수적으로 전제되어야 했던 것이다. 사마천의 다양하고 유연한 『사기』의 자료채록 방식은, 최술의 엄정하고 과학적인 ‘以經爲主’의 고증학에 의해 무너지고 말았다.
결과적으로 최술의 고증에 의해 사마천은 제자백가들의 도청도설을 『사기』 안에 수집하여 공자를 무고한 주범으로 낙인이 찍히고 말았다. 물론 오늘날까지 『사기』 「공자세가」의 사료적 가치는 아직도 가볍게 생각할 수 없을 정도로 막중하다. 하지만 최술의 과학적인 고증이 더하여짐으로써, 더욱 정확한 공자관련 자료로서 빛을 발할 수 있을 것이라고 생각한다.

영어초록

This article analyzed the viewpoint of 『Susagosinrok』, written by Choi-Sul(崔述 1740-1816), criticizing 『Shiji』. 『Susagosinrok』, one of the greatest performances in bibliographical study in Ching dynasty, tried a through investigation for the whole life of Confucius. As Choi-Sul's detail investigation on Confucius's life and historical facts claimed some viewpoints different from former viewpoints and suggested creative ideas through 『Susagosinrok』, so it is true that it had provided many implications to the researchers studying Confucius and 『Confucian Analects』
He demonstrated numberous errors on the historical facts related to Confucius in 『Shiji』, having been respected for thousands years as a immortal masterpiece written by Sima Qian, in 『Susagosinrok』. Specially he criticized the falsehood of 『Shiji』 by indicating the contents in 「Chronicles of Confucius」, reconstructing the life of Confucius, one by one. His criticism on 『Shiji』 based on the approach of bibliographical study was not only creative and interesting but also deeply related to his methodology of study, called 'scientific historian', and showed the essence of bibliographical study in Ching dynasty. Accordingly, this article pursued a concrete review about his conclusions derived by criticism and dialectic on the contents of 「Chronicles of Confucius」 in 『Shiji』 that had enjoyed an absolute authority for long time.
He devoted 48 clauses, about 30%, out of 155 items for dialects in 『Susagosinrok』, investigating Confucius's whole life, to criticize the errors of historical facts for Confucius in『Shiji』. His criticism mainly emphasized on 「Chronicles of Confucius」 and covered everything from the critical errors like willful creations based on ungrounded contents to the simple errors like some mistakes expressing wrong historical dates. He used ‘Philosophy emphasizing on scripture , a method of dialects used to be ordinary emphasized by him, for it.
He denied the assertion of all classes of philosophers such as Yangja, Mukja and Janhja, trying to assert their ideas by entrapping Confucius through a farfetched views as they pleased and slandering him in their mind though they pretended to respect him, and tried to describe the true features of Confucius. His life long goal for bibliographical study was only to demonstrate scientifically the false image of Confucius which had been intermingled with truth and falsehood for about 2,000 years. To realize his dream, his indispensable pre conditions were through criticisms and investigations on the errors for the historical facts of Confucius from 「Chronicles of Confucius」 in 『Shiji』. Sima Qiam's unique and flexible method for selecting data surrendered to his bibliographical study based on the strict and scientific ‘Philosophy emphasizing on scripture.
Conclusively, Sima Qiam was branded as a principal offender to slander Confucius for the suspicion of collecting false stories spread by all classes of philosophers for 『Shiji』.
Of course, the historical value of 『Shiji』 and 「Chronicles of Confucius」 is still great enough unable to be neglected until now. However, I think it comes to be a more correct and brighter masterpiece with the exact data related to Confucius by adding up his scientific investigation.
