‘불편한 진실’ : 한국학계의 백두산ㆍ간도지역 연구에 대한 성찰 (‘An Inconvenient Truth’: Reflections on the Research of Mt. Baekdu and Gando Areas in the Korean Academic Association)

초록

본고는 중국의 동북공정 전후 한국학계가 백두산과 간도문제를 어떻게 연구하였는지에 대해 분석하였다. 먼저 한국학계의 관련 연구를 주제별로 검토한 후, 연구시 유의할 점과 향후 연구의 지향점을 제안하였다.
본고에서 말하는 불편한 진실이란 전통시대 국가 간의 변경지대가 어떠한 이유와 절차로 특정 국가의 영토가 되는지, 한중 간 변경지대에서 발생한 간도문제는 왜, 언제, 어떻게 형성되었는지, 한중 간에 견해 차이가 발생한 근본적인 원인이 무엇인지 등이 명확하게 정리되지 않아 역사적 사실을 각 국가가 자의적으로 해석하는 것을 지칭한다. 이는 결국 무엇이 간도이고, 또 무엇을 간도문제로 볼 것인지, 한중 간 발생한 역사적 실체로서의 간도문제를 어떻게 연구하고 또 이해해야 할 것인가와 직결되어 있다.
2002년 중국의 동북공정 이후 한국은 역사를 잃어버릴지도 모른다는 위기감까지 더해지면서 간도문제 연구의 전성기를 맞이하였다. 간도문제를 둘러싼 정치사, 외교사, 사회사, 경제사, 문화사, 국제법적 측면까지 총체적으로 검토되었다. 백두산에 대해서는 고지도를 활용하여 두만강과 토문강이 서로 다른 강임을 증명하기도 하였다.
기존 연구에서 주목하지 못했던 것으로 한국에서 간도문제 교육시 필요한 교육 학습 모형이나 간도 영유권을 주장하는 시민 운동에 대해서도 연구되었다. 이는 간도문제가 단순히 역사문제에 그치는 것이 아니라 현실과도 연관되어 있는 것을 보여주는 사례라 하겠다.
간도문제는 한중 간 국익과 관련된 사안이기도 하여서 특정 내용을 이론화하거나 일반화할 때 주의해야 한다. 역사적 사실을 평가할 때 공신력 문제도 고려해야 한다. 더불어 향후 연구과제도 제시하였다.

영어초록

This paper analyzed how the Korean Academic Association studied the problems of Mt. Baekdu and Gando before and after China's Northeast Project. First, this paper reviewed the relevant research in the Korean academic association by subject and then suggested the points to be noted in the research and the direction of future research.
The inconvenient truth in this text refers to each country's arbitrary interpretation of historical facts regarding the reasons and procedures make the territory of a particular country a frontier between the countries in the traditional era; why, when and how the became of certain country's land between Korea and China was formed; and the fundamental reason that differences in views of Gando between Korea and China are not clearly clarified.
This is directly related to where Gando is, what Gando is, and how to study and understand the Gando problem as a historical entity between Korea and China.
After China's Northeast Project in 2002, Korea had a sense of crisis that it might lose its history, leading to a plethora of research on the Gando problem. The political, diplomatic, social, economic, and cultural history and international legal aspects surrounding the issue of Gando problem were comprehensively reviewed. As for Mt. Baekdu, the Tuman River and the Tomun River proved to be different rivers by utilizing old maps.
It was not noted in previous studies that the education learning model was needed for the education of the Gando problem in Korea and the civic movement claiming sovereignty of Gando. This is an example of how the problem of Gando is not just a matter of history, but also related to reality.
This paper pointed out that we should be careful in the theoretical and generalization of certain contents about the Gando problem. When evaluating historical facts, also consider the issue of credibility. In this paper, additionally, we presented future research tasks.
