초록

1930년대 한국, 중국, 일본이 위치한 동북아시아는 갈등이 지속된 격변기를 겪었다. 그리고 오늘날 동북아시아에는 다시금 긴장이 고조되고 있다. 따라서 당시에 대한 연구는 당시는 물론이고 오늘날에 대한 이해에 기여할 수 있다. 그런데 당시 동북아시아를 이해하려면, 한중일관계에 대한 종합적이고 공관(共觀)적인 관점(comprehensive and synoptic perspective)이 필요하다. 그러나 기존연구는 주로 중국, 일본, 한국 등 국가별 연구나 국제관계에 있어서는 한일관계나 중일관계에 치중한 바, 한중관계도 연구할 필요가 있다. 기독교계에서도 한중기독교 비교연구는 많지 않다.
본 논문의 목적은 한중관계를 당시 한중기독교를 중심으로 이해하고자 했다. 그 이유는 두 가지이다. 첫째, 한중관계는 광범위한 주제인 만큼 한 논문으로 다루기에는 너무나 크다. 둘째, 기독교는 특성상 민족주의와 세계주의의 양면을 지니고 있기 때문에, 양국관계를 이해하는데 유리한 점이 있다. 본 논문은 이런 목적을 이루기 위하여, 한중기독교가 한중관계에 영향을 준 것이 무엇인가를 살펴보았다. 아울러 당시 역사가 오늘날 동북아시아의 현실에 대하여 어떤 유산을 남기는가에 초점을 맞췄다.
본 논문은 1930년대 한중기독교의 문제들 가운데 대표적인 네 가지를 선별하여 살펴보았다. 그것들은 토착종파의 대두, 에큐메니칼운동의 현실, 만보산 사건 해결과정에 나타난 종교의 사회적 평화 조성 기능, 교회와 사회주의 문제이다. 이런 사건들은 각각 해석학의 다양성, 교회의 민족주의와 세계주의의 균형, 기독교의 공공신학적 기능, 그리고 기독교사회주의의 재기 가능성이라는 문제를 제기했다. 1930년대 한중사회와 한중기독교는 평화와 화합을 이끌어내는데 한계를 보였지만, 가능성도 보였다. 오늘날 동북아시아는 동일한 문제에 봉착하고 있다. 본 논문이 1930년대 한중기독교를 돌아본 것은 바로 이런 역사적 요구 때문이다.

영어초록

In the 1930s brutal realpolitik mentality overruled the region of North-eastern Asia where tension between Korea, China and Japan was ever growing; and the early twenty-first century witnesses the reemergence of the tension in the region. Presumably, therefore, the research on the region of the 1930s will be conducive to the understanding of the period under consideration as well as that of today. To do that properly, a comprehensive and synoptic perspective is necessary; and yet previous studies tend to approach the region by each country, or to focus on Korean-Japanese and Sino-Japanese relations, largely neglecting Sino-Korean relations. In a similar vein, there are few, if not any, comparative study of Korean and Chinese Christianities.
This paper aims to unearth the Sino-Korean relations by comparing Korean and Chinese Christianities at the time. It is because the comprehensive study of Sino-Korean relations is beyond the limits of a single research paper, and also because Christianity is characterized by dual aspects of nationalism and internationalism and thus can be a lens to look into the reality of the relations of the two countries. To this end, this paper fathoms how those Christianities affect the Sino-Korean relations and what legacy they bequeath to contemporary North-eastern Asia.
In doing so, this paper investigates four representative issues: the rise of indigenous Christian groups, the real state of affairs in the Asian ecumenical movement, the social peace-making function of the Christian churches shown in the Manbosan Event, and the relationship between the church and socialism. These issues raise the questions of the diversity of hermeneutics, the balance between nationalism and internationalism of the church, the public-theological function of Christianity, and the probability of the reemergence of Christian socialism, respectively. In the 1930s, both Korea and China suffered from endless conflicts and attempted to respond to the challenges, suggesting various alternatives. Although both the societies and Christianites in the two countries revealed their limitations by failing to build peace and reconciliation, they also showed much of their potential as a pathfinder. Admittedly, contemporary North-eastern Asia faces almost the same challenges. It is against this historical backdrop that this paper is engaged in reflecting the Korean and Chinese Christianities in the 1930s.
