몽골 구비서사문학에 나타난 지하계 형상과 그 의미 고찰 (A Study on the Image and Meanings of the Underground World in Mongolian Oral Narrative Literature)

초록

몽골의 전통적인 3계관에서 3계는 한 세계 안에 높고 낮은 대륙으로 관념되었으나, 인간의 인지 발달과 사회 변화, 문화 접변으로 인해 선악의 가치판단이 개입된 수직적 세계로 전개되어 왔다. 지하계는 인간세계 이상의 문화적 양상과 아름다움이 존재하는 곳에서 점차 좋지 않은 곳, 악한 곳으로 기울고, 7, 77층의 수 상징이 개입되면서 천상과 지상에 대립하는 마성(魔性)의 수직적 공간으로 관념되었다. 지하세계는 대개 동북쪽의 7, 77층 아래 검은 땅, 검은(붉은) 해저에 악귀, 괴물 등이 존재하는 부정적인 곳으로 형상화된다. 그러나 7수와 검은색은 부정적이고 악한 것에 대한 메타포이자 강력한 힘, 악을 징치하는 힘과 능력의 이중적 의미를 띠며, 지하신들 역시 그 양가적 특성을 갖는다. 지하계의 방위인 동북쪽은 원래 서북쪽으로 서쪽과 북쪽을 저승과 지하계의 방향으로 보는 일반적인 관념과 일치한다. 몽골의 저승은 지하계뿐 아니라 천상, 지상의 유연한 공간으로 나타난다.
지하계는 죽음의 공간, 퇴치해야 할 혐오스런 존재의 부정적 공간을 넘어 천상계와 지상계가 연결되고 순환되는 입체적 성격을 띠는 곳으로, 사납고 막강한 힘을 가진 지하계 존재들은 원래 천상적 존재(별)이나 지상, 지하에 관여하여 인간의 생사화복을 주관하고, 인간 삶을 수호하고 풍요를 가져다주는 근원적인 힘으로 자연계의 평형을 조절하는 역할을 하는 동시에 천둥, 번개, 폭우, 폭풍 등 과도한 자연의 힘을 상징함으로써 세상의 악과 갈등, 대립의 원천으로 부정관 관념이 확대된 존재라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

In Mongolia, the traditional three worlds were represented by the ideas of high and low continents within a single world. Human cognition development, social changes, and acculturation, however, caused them to unfold in a vertical world where the value judgment of good and evil intervened. The underground world gradually inclined from a domain holding cultural patterns and beauty beyond the human world to a bad and weak domain. As the number symbols of 7 and 77 layers intervened, it developed into a vertical domain of devilism that confronted the celestial and earthly worlds. The underground world was largely represented as a negative domain where demons, monsters, and wicked wizards lived in the dark ground under 7 and 77 layers in the northeast or the black(red) ocean floor. The number 7 and the dark color have dual meanings between the metaphor of negative and evil things and strong and the power and ability to govern powerful force and evil. The underground deities also have such ambivalent features. The northeast direction, which is the direction of the underground world, is the same as the general idea that the otherworld and the underground world lie in the west and north in the northwest direction.
The underground world has a three-dimensional nature of being connected to the celestial and earthly worlds and circulated with them beyond the place of death and the negative space of disgusting beings that should be eliminated. The beings of the underground world represent fierce and strong power. They were originally celestial beings(stars), but they govern the life and death of human beings and the haps and mishaps in their lives by getting involved in the earthly and underground worlds. They have the fundamental force to protect human lives and bring wealth to them. As they adjust the balance of the natural world and, at the same time, represent the excessive force of nature such as thunder, lightning, heavy rain, and storm, expanding their meanings as the source of conflicts and confrontations against the evil of the world.
