송사소설계 추리소설과 정탐소설계 추리소설 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on tales of ratiocination of Lawsuit Novel Style and Detective Novel Style)

초록

본 논문은 이해조의 『쌍옥적』을 한국 추리소설의 효시로 보고, 개화기의 추리소설을 서구에서 일방적으로 이식된 결과물로 여기는 단일한 시각에 대한 의문에서 출발하였다. 나아가 개화기 추리소설은 조선조의 송사소설에 뿌리를 두고 있는 송사소설계 추리소설과 서구 추리소설의 영향을 받은 정탐소설계 추리소설이라는 두 가지 유형으로 구성되어 있음에 주목하여, 개화기 추리소설이 출현하게 된 사회적 의미망과 관련시켜 그 서사적 특질과 존재 양상을 비교․분석하였다.
정탐소설계 추리소설은 타인의 재산권이나 생명권을 노린 근대적 범죄 유형을 주로 다루고 있는 반면, 송사소설계 추리소설은 가정이나 향곡 등 공동체 내에서의 갈등과 원한에 의한 패륜적인 범죄사건을 그리고 있다. 또한 개화기 추리소설에서는 서구의 추리소설과 달리 직업적인 탐정이 존재하지 않는다. 정탐소설계 추리소설에서 탐정은 경찰, 어사, 군수 등 공적 영역에 속하는 인물인 반면, 송사소설계 추리소설에서는 등장인물 중의 한 사람이 일시적으로 탐정의 역할을 대신하여 범죄사건을 해결한다. 또한 정탐소설계 추리소설과 송사소설계 추리소설의 두 유형 모두 인과관계의 도치, 즉 도서법(到敍法)을 활용하여 독자들의 호기심을 촉발하는 서사 전략을 취하고 있다. 탐색의 서사가 우세한 정탐소설계 추리소설은 탐정이 조각난 정보를 찾아 마치 퍼즐을 맞추어가듯이 가추법을 동원하여 범죄사건의 동기와 원인을 밝혀내는 정탐과정을 보여준다. 따라서 독자들로 하여금 범죄사건의 전말을 파헤치는 탐정의 탐색활동에 강한 호기심을 가지고 서사를 끝까지 읽도록 유도한다. 반면, 범죄소설적 요소가 강한 송사소설계 추리소설에서는 범죄사건의 인과관계가 부분적으로 도치되는 서사구조를 취한다. 이에 따라 독자의 호기심을 자극하는 정보의 성격은 작품마다 다르게 나타나며 상대적으로 서사적 긴장감도 떨어진다.

영어초록

This study started from a question on the view that Lee Hae‐jo’s Ssangokjeok is the beginning of Korean tales of ratiocination and tales of ratiocination during the enlightenment period are merely the results of one sided import from the West. Furthermore, taking note of the fact that tales of ratiocination in the enlightenment period are divided into two styles (lawsuit novel style rooted into lawsuit novels in the Chosun Dynasty and detective novel style influenced by Western mysteries), this study made a comparative analysis of their narrative characteristic and existential pattern in connection to the social semantic network that caused the appearance of tales of ratiocination during the enlightenment period.
While detective‐novel‐style tales of ratiocination deal with modern crimes seeking others’ property or life, lawsuit‐novel‐style ones describe immoral crimes involving conflicts and grudges within a community such as family and town. Furthermore, different from Western ones, Korean tales of ratiocination during the enlightenment period do not have a professional detective. Detectives in detective‐novel‐style tales of ratiocination are public figures such as policeman, royal emissary, and governor, but in lawsuit‐novel‐style tales of ratiocination one of characters in the mystery plays the role of a detective temporarily and solves the crime. In addition, both detective novel‐style and lawsuit‐novel‐style tales of ratiocination use inversion, which inverts the order of the cause and the result, as a narration strategy stimulating the reader’s curiosity. In detective‐novel‐style tales of ratiocination, in which the narration of search is dominant, the motive and cause of crimes are uncovered through abduction as the detective collects fragmented pieces of information like a puzzle game. Accordingly, the reader is induced to read the narration to the end with strong curiosity about the detective’s investigation that digs up the whole story of a crime. On the contrary, lawsuit‐novel‐style tales of ratiocination, which are close to crime stories, take the narrative structure that inverts the causal relation of a criminal case. As a result, the characteristic of information stimulating the reader’s curiosity varies among novels, and narrative tension is also relatively low.
