4․19의 장(場)과 『사상계』 신인작가들의 소설 (The Field of 4․19 and the Short Stories of the New Writers of the Sasanggye)

초록

본고는 1960년 4․19에서부터 1961년 5․16군사쿠데타를 겪기 전까지‘4․19의 장(場)’에서 과연 당대 문학이 어떤 상상력과 인식을 보여 주었는가 하는 질문에서 출발하였다. 이때 주목한 것이 당시 비판적 매체로서 강력한 영향력을 발휘했던 월간 종합지 『사상계』였고, 창간 이후 문학 작품을 꾸준히 실어왔던 『사상계』가 특히 4․19를 전후하여 신인작가를 적극적으로 발굴하고자 했다는 점을 포착하였다. 이에 한남철, 김동립, 박헌구, 현재훈, 강용준 등 『사상계』 신인작가들이 ‘4․19의 장’에서 『사상계』에 발표한 소설들의 특징을 분석하였다.
『사상계』 신인작가들의 소설은 ‘국가, 자유, 공동체’라는 화두(話頭)를가지고 있었는데, 전후세대를 넘어서려는 문학적 지향과 4․19의 장이 만나는 지점에서 『사상계』 매체이념과는 ‘다른’ 사유를 전개하였다. 그들은‘이중 감옥’ 모티프를 통해 개인에 대한 국가폭력은 물론 남북의 국가 폭력을 동시에 문제시하였다. 그리고 집단 주체가 아닌 개인이 자유를 향해 실존적 투쟁을 하는 탐색 과정을 그림으로써 ‘경계 넘기’의 상상력을 부각하고 윤리의 차원으로 진입하였다. 동시에 그들은 인물의 중심서사에 소외효과를 발생시키는 서사전략을 구사하여 과연 개인이 구조적 현실로부터자유로울 수 있는가 하는 냉정한 질문을 던짐으로써 구조주의와 휴머니즘(실존주의)적 사유의 대립 구도를 서사화하였다. ‘공동체 문제’ 역시 이 점과 연동되어 있다. 현실의 공간화라는 독특한 서사구조를 통하거나 4․19 현장을 배경으로 하여 방관자의 내력과 내면을 전경화함으로써, 연대의식을 가지지 못하는 대중의 현실에 비판적으로 접근하되 그것이 사회 구조적모순과 연관되어 있다는 인식을 드러내었다. 『사상계』 신인작가군의 이 같은 성취는 1960년대 전반기 문학사의 공백을 채울 수 있는 가능성으로 평가할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This paper started out from the question what Korean literature in the period between the popular uprising of April 19, 1960 and the military coup d’état of May 16, 1961 displayed imagination and awareness. In this paper, I focus on the monthly general interest magazine Sasanggye, which regularly carried works of literature and wielded significant influence as a medium of criticism, paying particular attention to the band of new writers the magazine actively discovered post the April 19 Revolution. Here, I analyze the characteristics of the works of Han Nam-cheol, Kim Dong-rip, Pak Heon-gu, and Hyun Jae-hoon that were published in the magazine.
The works of the new writers of Sasanggye share a common thread of “country, freedom, and community,” and their literary orientation, which tried to go beyond the postwar generation, shows a thinking that was “different” from the philosophy of Sasanggye.
Through the motif of “dual prisons,” these writers raise the issue of state violence against the individual as well as violence between the North and South. By portraying the existential struggle of the individual in his or search for freedom, rather than focusing on a collective entity, these works display the imaginative power of “crossing borders” and enter the realm of ethics. At the same time, they narrativize the conflict between structural and humanist (realist) thinking by raising questions about whether the individual can attain freedom from structural reality by employing a narrative strategy that creates an alienation effect in the central narrative of characters. The “community issue” is also connected to this.
These writers take a critical approach to the reality of the masses who lack a sense of solidarity by foregrounding the inner workings of the minds of bystanders in the backdrop of the April 19 Revolution or by using a unique narrative structure of spatializing reality. At the same they reveal an awareness that this is connected to the structural imbalance of society. Such achievements of the new writers of Sasanggye can be evaluated through their ability to fill the gap of the literature of the first half of the 1960s.
