동아시아 비구니계율 전래와 수계의 변천 (A Study on the Transmission and Ordination of nun's Discipline in East-Asia)

초록

본고는 인도에서 형성된 비구니 계율과 수계가 동아시아에 어떻게 전래되고 어떤 형태로 변화하고 정착되었는지에 대해 정리한 것이다. 붓다 당시에 구성된 인도 비구니 교단의 구족계는 3단계로 이루어진다. 첫째, 붓다의 요청에 의해 이루어진 팔경계에 의한 대애도 고타미의 수계, 둘째, 나머지 석가족 여성의 비구들만에 의한 구족계 수계, 셋째, 그 후의 여성들에게 주어졌던 이부 승가에 의한 구족계가 그것이다. 3단계 가운데 최초 구족계인 팔경계의 여섯 번째 제육경법은 식차마나에 대한 내용이다. 그러나 대애도 고타미는 물론 함께 출가한 석가족 여성들도 식차마나 기간을 지냈다는 기록은 보이지 않는다. 비구·비구니가 분리된 이후 이부 승가에 의한 구족계가 이루어졌으며, 식차마나계와 사미니계도 형성되었다. 이와 같이 인도에서 단계를 거쳐 형성된 비구니 구족계는 스리랑카를 지나 중국에 전래되었다.
중국은 5세기 초에 4부의 율이 전해졌다. 4부의 율이 전해지기 전부터 비구·비구니는 존재했지만, 그 시대의 비구나 비구니는 설사 계율이나 갈마본 등이 전해졌다 해도 그것을 존중하거나 실천하지 않는 상태의 교단이었다. 이러한 점을 안타깝게 여기고 계율 연구와 유포에 열정을 쏟은 사람이 바로 석도안이다. 그는 만년에 서역교통의 요충지였던 장안에 머물면서 서역사문과 교류하고 계율 번역에 참석하면서 계율존중과 전파에 힘썼다. 비구니계본의 경우도 비구계본과 같은 해에 장안에서 번역되었지만 대부분 도안과 그의 지인 축법태에 의해서 역출되었음을 자료를 통해 알 수 있다.
중국 비구니의 수계과정은 최초의 비구니 정검니에 대하여 기록한 『비구니전』 제1권에 그 내용이 등장한다. 그러나 이 수계는 적법한 방법이 아니었으며, 433년에 『사분율』에 따른 이부 승가의 구족계가 이루어졌다.
삼국시대에 중국으로부터 불교를 전래받은 한국은 일본에 남아있는 기록에 의해 고구려나 백제에 비구니 교단이 존재했음을 짐작할 뿐이다. 그 후 정식으로 구족계를 받았다고 기록된 여성은, 고려 말 출가하여 10명의 계사들 앞에서 정식으로 수계를 받은 성효라는 비구니다. 이렇게 중국에서 전래된 『사분율』에 의한 구족계 수계가 현재까지 이어져 오고 있다.
우리나라로부터 불교를 전래받은 일본불교의 최초 출가자는 젠신니라는 여성이며 여성은 물론 남성 출가자의 수계도 역시 여성에 의해 처음으로 이루어진다. 자료에 의하면 젠신니의 구족계는 고구려나 백제 비구니들의 도움으로 성립되었다고 한다. 그러나 헤이안 시대부터 교세가 커진 종파불교의 등장과 함께 국가로부터의 자격을 인정하는 비구니 교단은 사라지게 된다. 대신 천태종을 비롯한 종파에서 『사분율』에 의한 구족계가 아닌 『범망경』 등의 대승보살계를 받는다. 현재 일본은 친란이 창립한 정토진종은 니승이 없으며 결혼이 가능한 여성 수행자가 삭발하지 않고, 삼보와 오계를 받고 수행한다. 도원이 창립한 조동선은 삼귀의와 세 가지 서원, 그리고 열 가지 근본계를 받고 수행하는 니승이 있다. 그 밖에 천태, 진언, 일련종, 임제선 등은 보통 『범망경』 보살계를 받고 활동하고 있다.

This paper deals with how nun's ordination established in India transmitted to East-Asia and how to be changed and be established there.
The Ordination of nun's community in India at Buddha's time consists of three steps. Namely, the ordination of Gotamī through the accepting eight strict rules(Gurudhamra), the ordination of five hundred Sakyan women by monks' community and the ordination of women after that time by both bhikṣu Sangha and bhikṣuṇi Sangha.
Among three steps the sixth Gurudharma is related with the female probationer(śikṣamāṇā). However the record that the Gotamī and the five hundred Sakyan women spent the time of the female probationer is nowhere.
After dividing into two Sanghas the Ordination Ceremony was carried out by both Sanghas and the rule of the female probationer and the novice was established. This so step by step formed nun's ordination transmitted via Sri Lank into China.
It is generally accepted that Vinayas of four Buddhist Schools transmitted to China in the early 5th century. Before that time there were monks and nuns,The Chinese buddhist communities might not think to be respectful to and follow them. Because of this problem the monk Dao-an studied and spreaded Vinayas very hard.
His Staying in Changan, the center of the transport between China and the western Central Asia, he was in contact with the foreign monks, was participated in Translation and went his best in order to cause to respect and spread Vinayas.
It can be seen form the remained texts that the Bhikṣunī-Prātimokṣa and the Bhikṣu-Prātimokṣa were translated in Changan in same year and the monk Dao-an and his friend Chu Ho-Tai translated a majority of them.
The process of the ordination of chinese nuns appeared in the first chapter of “Lives of the Nuns" was recorded about the first nun Chu Ching-Chien.
But this ordination was not a proper way. It is not the proper ordination by both monk's and nun's Community according to the Dharmagupta's Discipline.
It seems that according to Texts remained in Japan, there were bhikṣunī communities in Koguryo or Paekche among three independent kingdoms. After that time the woman recoded to receive ordination officially was a nun Songho. She was admitted ‘Going Forth' in the late Koryo Dynasty and received ordination from ten Acariyas. Like this, the ordination by the Dhamragupta's Vinaya introduced from China to Korea has been transmitted till our time.
The first ordained was not a man but a woman named Jensenni. It is said that Jensenni's ordination ceremony was carried out on the help of nuns of Koguryo and Paekche.
But, from the Heian period(994-1185) the great Sects appeared. As a result Nun's Communities who should be allowed by the State disappeared. Instate of that, in several sects like T'ien T'ai etc. women had to be received Bodhisattva's Precepts instate of the Dharmagupta's Vinaya.
In present, in the japanese ‘the true Pure Land sect' founded by Shinran there are no nuns and women with hairs who could be married are practicing taken only three Refuges and received five Precepts.
In the japanese Soto sect founded by Dogen, there are nuns who are practicing taken three Refuges, three Vows and received ten basic Precepts.
Women in the T'ien T'ai sect founded Chih-i, the Shingon sect founded by Kukai, the Nichiren sect and the Ninzai sect etc. are normally working received Bodhi- sattva's Precepts of ‘Brahma-net Sutra', the sutra presents Mahayana precepts for Bodhisattvas.
