신라 金庾信系의 정치적 위상과 추이 (Differences in the Political Status of Descendants of Kim Yu-Shin of the Silla Period)

초록

金庾信은 武烈系와 함께 삼국을 통일한 주역이었다. 그러나 김유신계도 중대 말에 이르러서는 그 이전과 다른 정치적 상황들에 놓이게 된다. 먼저 중대 말 김유신계의 인물인 金允中은 할아버지인 김유신의 후광으로 성덕왕대에도 여전히 무열계 왕권과 돈독한 관계를 유지하였다. 그러나 김유신계인 김윤중의 활약은 이후 나타나지 않고 있다. 신라 통일 주역으로서의 김유신의 위상은 중대 성덕왕대에도 여전히 강하게 남아 있어 무열계 왕의 비호를 받고 있었으나, 왕을 중심으로 형성된 새로운 세력들은 김유신계를 견제하고자 했던 것으로 보인다.
그리하여 기존에는 김윤중의 손자인 金巖 대에는 김유신계가 진골에서 6두품으로 하락했다고 보았다. 김암은 무열계의 마지막 왕 혜공왕 때에 있었던 김유신계인 金融의 모반사건으로 위상이 격하된 가문을 일으킨 인물로 추정된다. 김융 모반사건 이후 김유신계는 김암의 무력시위로 혜공왕의 사과를 받아내고, 왕권과 정치적으로 타협하여 실추된 가문의 위상을 회복하였다. 이처럼 김유신계는 중대 말 쇠락한 것은 아니었다. 오히려 하대 원성왕대에는 왕권과 밀접한 관계를 맺은 것으로 보인다.
김유신계는 하대 무열계 金周元과 원성왕 金敬信의 왕위 쟁탈전에서 무열계가 아닌 원성계를 선택했던 것으로 보인다. 원성왕 즉위 초 浿江鎭頭上이었던 김암과 원성왕은 정치적으로 밀접한 관계에 있었다. 이처럼 신라 하대 초 김유신계는 무열계가 아닌 원성계를 정치적 동반자로 선택했다. 이와 같은 선택은 헌덕왕 때에 또다시 발생한 무열계와 원성계의 왕위 쟁탈전인 金憲昌의 난에서 김유신계인 金雄元이 원성계를 지지하는 것으로 이어진다. 그러자 원성계의 입장에서 볼 때 김유신계는 오히려 무열계를 견제하는데 필요한 세력이 되었다. 김헌창의 난 이후 원성계 흥덕왕은 김유신계를 무마 내지 회유하기 위해 김유신을 興武大王으로 추증하였다. 이는 원성계가 김유신계를 비롯한 금관가야세력을 모두 아우르기 위한 조치일 뿐만 아니라 흥덕왕의 후계 구도를 위한 일종의 정치적 연합이었다.
이후 경문왕, 헌강왕대에 이르러 김유신계인 新金氏 인물들은 奈麻, 大奈麻 등 낮은 관등을 소지한다. 이는 경문왕, 헌강왕대에는 김유신계의 지위가 이전에 비해 매우 낮은 것을 알 수 있다. 그 이유로 흥덕왕 사후 일어났던 원성계 내부의 왕위쟁탈전에서 김유신계가 仁謙系를 지지했을 것으로 추정하였다. 인겸계는 결국 신무왕의 즉위로 왕위쟁탈전에서 禮英系에 밀려 다시는 왕을 배출하지 못하기 때문이다. 인겸계를 밀었던 김유신계도 결국 인겸계와 운명을 같이 하여 신무왕 이후 예영계 왕들의 치세에는 세력이 현저히 약해졌을 것이다.

영어초록

Kim Yu-shin, along with the line of King Muyeol, played a leading role in unifying the three kingdoms. By the late middle Silla period, however, descendents of Kim Yu-shin did not have as much impact on politics as their ancestors. For example, although Kim Yun-jung in the late middle Silla period, the grandson of Kim Yu-shin, still maintained close relationships with descendents of King Muyeol even during King Seongdeok's reign on his grandfather's coattails, he failed to play an active role in the political field. Kim Yu-shin's stature as a leading contributor to the unification of the three kingdoms was still high during King Seongdeok's reign under the protection of the descendants of King Muyeol. However, it appears that those who newly acquired powers tried to contain the growth of political influence of descendants of Kim Yu-shin.
Therefore, it was widely believed that the political rank of descendants of Kim Yu-shin was reduced from true bone to head rank sixth of bone rank system when Kim Yun-jung's grandson, Kim Am, was the head of the family. Kim Am is presumed to have raised the status of the family which had became reduced due to one of Kim Yu-shin's descendant, Kim Yung's treason during the reign of King Hyegong, the last king of the line of Muyeol. After Kim Yung's treacherous acts, Kim Am elicited an apology from King Hyegong through violent demonstration and restored his family's reduced status through political negotiations with the king. This indicates that descendants of Kim Yu-shin still exerted strong political influence in the late middle Silla era. In addition, descendants of Kim Yu-shin established an intimate relationship with King Wonseong.
It appears that descendants of Kim Yu-shin helped Kim Gyeong-sin to win the battle for the throne against Kim Ju-won, the descendant of King Muyeol. In the early years of King Wonseong's reign, Commander of the Paegang Garrison Kim Am and King Wonseong maintained a close political relationship. Likewise, in the early late Silla period, descendants of Kim Yu-shin chose the line of Wonseong over the line of Muyeol as their political partners. In addition, in another battle for the throne between the line of Muyeol and the line of Wonseong which occurred by Kim Heon-chang during King Heondeok's reign, Kim Ung-won, a descendant of Kim Yu-shin, helped the line of Wonseong, not the line of Muyeol. Descendants of King Wonseong needed the support of descendants of Kim Yu-son to restrain the power of descendants of King Muyeol. After the battle, King Heungdeok, the line of Wonseong, granted Kim Yu-shin an unprecedented posthumous title "Great King Heungmu." This was not only a measure to embrace Geumgwan Gaya forces including descendants of Kim Yu-shin and but also a political alliance to solidify power succession after King Heungdeok.
Later, in the reigns of Kings Gyeongmun and Heongang, descendants of Kim Yu-shin held low ranks, such as Nama and Daenama. This indicates that the political status of descendants of Kim Yu-shin during the reigns of Kings Gyeongmun and Heongang was far lower than that of their ancestors. It is presumed that this was because descendants of Kim Yu-shin helped the line of In Gyeom in the battle for throne among descendants of King Wonseong which occurred after King Heungdeok's death. After King Sinmu's accession to the throne, no kings came from the line of In Gyeom who lost the battle for the throne to the line of Yeyeong. As a result, descendants of Kim Yu-shin who supported the line of In Gyeom had far less powerful political influence during the reigns of kings who came from the line of Yeyeong after King Sinmu.
