청주 오송 유적 출토 부여계 동병철검의 의의 (Significance of the Buyeo Style Bimetallic Sword from Osong Site of Cheongju)

초록

본 고에서는 2018년에 정식보고가 된 청주 오송 유적에서 출토된 부여계 동병철검의 의의를다루었다. 이 유물은 최근 남한에서 출토 예가 증가하는 부여 계통의 유물로, 그동안 단편적으로만논의되어오던 백제와 부여의 관계에 대한 구체적인 접근을 할 수 있는 자료로 주목된다. 이에 본고에서는 오송 유적에서 출토된 동병철검의 분석, 매장의례의 맥락, 공반유물 등을 검토하였고, 여기에 기존에 논의되었던 문헌사적 연구를 더하여 그 의의를 살펴보았다.
먼저, 오송 출토 동병철검이 가진 유물의 특성을 검토하여 해당 철검이 200년 가까이 장기간사용되었으며 병부를 부러뜨리고 검신을 교체하여 재사용을 하는 등 단순한 교역이나 교류의 산물로 획득된 위신재의 성격과 다르다는 것을 밝혔다. 또한 유구와 공반유물의 경우 오송 무덤군의다른 토광묘와 거의 차이가 없다는 사실도 확인했다. 즉, 수 세기에 걸쳐서 전세된 동병철검을 제외하면 오송 유적 15지점 17호 무덤의 묘제와 공반유물은 오송 및 충청 내륙 지역의 같은 시기집단과 차이를 보이지 않는다. 이와 같은 출토 정황을 통하여 17호 무덤의 피장자는 이 동병철검을 사회적인 신분의 상징이 아닌 개인의 정체성과 위치를 나타내는 철검으로 소유했다고 결론을내렸다.
이러한 정황은 곧 해당 피장자가 '부여계 유이민의 후손'이거나, 직접적으로 부여 계통이 아닐지라도 '부여 계통임을 표방하는 인물'을 것으로 볼 수 있다. 어떠한 경우라도 이러한 부여 계통의동병철검이 해당 지역의 토착 집단에서 용인되고 거부감 없이 사용되었다는 점에서 이 유물의 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 다시 말해, 이는 해당 인물이 자신의 정체성으로 부여 계통 혹은 북방계통을선택하고 유지한 것으로, '박제화되어 상징화된 선민의식의 표현품'으로 역할을 했고, 당시 사회 내에서 이러한 표현이 용인되었다는 것을 추정할 수 있다.
오송 유적에서 출토한 동병철검을 곧바로 부여계를 자처한 백제인의 건국 신화와 선민의식을증명한다고 보기는 어렵다. 또한, 하나의 유물만으로 특정 집단의 이주를 상정할 수는 없다. 하지만 최근 남한에서 부여계의 유물 출토가 증가하고 있으며 오송 유적의 예와 같이 토착 집단에서부여계 유물이 장기간 용인되어 사용되었다. 따라서 백제의 국가 성립과정 중에서 부여계 신화가채택되었다는 기존 견해는 성립하기 어렵다. 대신에 청주 오송, 김포 운양동과 같은 개인적이고지역적으로 전승되어온 부여계의 소속감을 유지하던 집단들이 이전부터 존속했고, 백제의 고대국가 발전기에 그들의 신화체계가 백제 전반적으로 공인되었을 가능성이 크다.
이처럼 오송 유적은 그간 가설의 영역으로 머물렀던 백제와 부여의 관계에 대해 고고학적 해석을 가능하게 하며, 아울러 백제가 부여 계통임을 자처했던 계승의식이 그저 가상의 공간에만 머물지는 않았다는 것을 보여주는 예시로 작용한다.

영어초록

This paper deals with the significance of the Buyeo style bimetallic sword, excavated from the Osong site of Cheongju, which became fully reported in 2018. This artifact is considered as the first concrete material that provides a significant approach to the relationship between Baekje and Buyeo, which has been discussed only in some fragments of the historical record. Recently, Buyeo style materials have been excavated increasingly in South Korea. Therefore, in this article, the authors examine the meaning of the bimetallic sword excavated from Osong, based on the context of the burial rite and artifacts. Based on this, the authors reexamine the significance of the Buyeo lineage claim of Baekje, reflected on archaeological finds.
First of all, this sword's most significant feature is its long-time usage. Dot ornaments on the tang were severely rubbed, and the pommel was cut off to bent over the end of the sword and attach firmly. Compared to the Laoheshen, Yushu, Jilin site's chronology, the Osong sword had been used for nearly 200 years. It differed from any other prestigious goods in Baekje in its indistinctive features.
Secondly, the burial assemblage of this tomb and its location has little difference with other Baekje wooden tombs in the Osong site. Through this excavation, we can conclude that the owner of the bimetallic sword(No. 17 tombs of 15 sectors of Osong) possessed it for indicating the Buyeo belonging identity individually, but not as a symbol of social status. So, we can conclude that the owner of this sworn claimed as a "Buyeo lineage clan" or a "person who claims to be a Buyeo lineage". In any case, possession of this bimetallic sword was accepted and used without repulsion in the native community of the Osong site. In other words, it is estimated that the owner maintained the Buyeo lineage claims his identity, and expression of the Buyeo lineage was tolerated by his society.
It is hard to say that the bimetallic sword of the Osong site directly proves the founding myth of the Baekje's Buyeo lineage. But it is possible that a small group of Buyeo migration, as written in the historical record and reflected on archaeological sites as Unyang-dong of Gimpo, Pungnab fortress, and Osong of Chengju, hold their Buyeo identity. However, the number of Buyeo style relics in South Korea has been increasing recently. As in the example of Cheongju Osong, Buyeo artifacts have been used for a long time in indigenous groups. It isn't easy to establish Baekje the Buyeo lineage myth system in the 4th century as a state dogma without any precedent claim. Osong's case shows that Baekje developed their myth dogma based on some regional lineage claims.
As such, the bimetallic sword of the Osong site is significant in that it enables attempts to interpret the relationship between Baekje and Buyeo, which has remained a hypothetical area. The osong site serves as an example of the fact that the claim of Buyeo succession did not just stay in an invisible area.
