예술생태계로 본 대전의 전통공연예술 (Traditional performing arts in Daejeon viewed through the art ecosystem)

초록

본 논의는 전통공연예술이 지역에서 전승, 발전하기 위한 방법을 고민하기 위해 예술생태계의 관점에서 대전지역의 전통예술을 고찰한 것이다. 예술생태계적 차원에서 고려해야 할 내용을 내적 요소와 외적 요소로 나누어 살폈다. 내적 요소로는 예술가의 행위 혹은 작품이 향유자에게 전달되는 핵심 조건이 경쟁, 매개, 지원, 교육이라고 보았다. 외적 요소로는 내적 요소를 둘러 싼 환경으로, 1차 환경을 예술사회로, 2차 환경을 지역사회로 보았다. 이러한 조건들이 성숙되고 발전할 때 예술생태계가 선순환, 발전할 것을 기대할 수 있다.
이러한 차원에서 대전지역의 전통공연예술을 무형문화재 종목을 중심으로 살펴보면 현재 9개의 무형문화재 종목이 해당됨을 알 수 있다. 이들은 지역 예술과 연관하여 환경 생태계를 구성하고 있다. 이들을 둘러 싼 외적 요소로 예술사회 역할은 한국국악협회 대전지부(대전국악협회)가 대표적이고, 지역사회의 역할은 대전문화재단이 대표적이라 할 수 있다. 이들 환경 요인들이 지역예술가의 활동과 지원을 주도하며 예술생태계를 이끌고 있다고 보았다. 본 논의에서는 예술생태계 속에서 단체와 기관의 역할과 현황을 파악하고, 건강한 예술생태계를 만들기 위한 노력이 필요함을 역설하였다.
지역의 전통예술에 대한 창작, 공연, 교육, 연구, 인재육성, 지원, 정책과 제도 등이 어느 곳 하나 막힘이 없이 유기적으로 순환해야 대전 전통예술의 수준도 높아질 것은 자명하다. 따라서 내적 요소 차원에서 예술생태계를 건강하기 만들기 위한 네 가지 제언을 하였다. 첫째, 경쟁과 관련하여 공연자(예술인)의 수준과 역량을 키우기 위한 정책이 필요하다. 둘째, 매개와 관련하여 충청지역 중고제 가무악과의 연관성을 높여야 한다. 셋째, 지역 전통예술에 대한 연구 지원이 활성화되어야 한다. 넷째, 문화예술교육의 확대와 지역 인재 발굴, 육성을 위한 내적 시스템이 갖추어져야 한다.
전통공연예술이 지속가능한 발전을 하기 위해서는 예술인들만의 노력으로는 불가능하다. 예술계를 지탱하는 핵심요소와 둘러싼 환경이 건강한 선순환을 이루도록 시스템을 만드는 일이 필요하다.

영어초록

This paper examines traditional arts in the Daejeon region from the perspective of the art ecosystem to consider strategies for transmitting and developing traditional performing arts in the region. The study examined internal and external factors for consideration at the art ecosystem level. The internal factors of competition, mediation, support, and education were identified as the core conditions for an artist's works to be delivered to viewers. The external factors were defined as the environment surrounding the internal factors, with the primary environment being the art society and the secondary environment being the local community. When these conditions mature and develop, the art ecosystem can be expected to develop in a virtuous cycle.
From this perspective, we examined the status of traditional performing arts as intangible cultural assets in the Daejeon area. We identified nine intangible cultural assets currently in existence. These constitute an environmental ecosystem in connection with local art. These are the external factors surrounding the art society, with the Daejeon branch of the Korean Traditional Music Association filling that role, and the Daejeon Cultural Foundation representing the local community. The paper presents these environmental factors as driving the activities of and support for local artists and leading the art ecosystem. We sought to understand the role and status of organizations and institutions in the art ecosystem.
Evidently, the level of traditional arts in Daejeon will only increase when creation, performance, education, research, talent development, support, and policies and systems for local traditional arts circulate organically without any obstruction. Therefore, this paper presents four suggestions to realize a healthy art ecosystem at the level of internal factors. First, policies are needed to raise artists’ competitiveness. Second, in relation to mediation, the connection with the Chungcheong region's Joongje song and dance music must be strengthened. Third, research support for local traditional arts is needed. Fourth, an internal system must be established to expand cultural arts education and discover and foster local talent.
It is impossible for traditional performing arts to achieve sustainable development through artists’ efforts alone. It is therefore necessary to create a system that allows the core elements that support the art world and the surrounding environment to form a healthy virtuous cycle.
