서울․경기 지역의 기독교계 3·1운동 (Christians in the March First Movement in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province)

초록

서울은 3·1운동의 발상지로서 기독교인 민족대표들이 활약했던 곳이고, 또 탑골공원과 남대문에서의 시위에 서울 시내 3개 스테이션에서 세운 교회와 학교 구성원들이 적극 연대해서 참여한 결과 그 주도권을 아낌없이 행사하며 그 책임과 의무를 다하였다. 이는 그 후 3·1운동에서 기독교가 대표성을 갖는 중요한 근거가 되었다. 개성 역시 남감리교의 스테이션이 있던 곳으로 서울과 같이 그 구내의 학교와 교회들이 지역 의거의 중요한 동력으로 작용했다. 그런데 이와 같은 사례는 경기도의 군 단위 지역으로 들어가면 좀 다른 양상이 나타난다. 즉 수원과 강화처럼 지역교회와 교인들이 3·1운동을 강력하게 주도하는 경우도 물론 있었지만, 대체적으로는 기독교인이 주동자로 참여하거나 지역교회가 다른 세력과 연합하는 사례가 더 많이 관찰된다는 것이다. 한마디로 말한다면, 3·1운동에서 중앙의 상부구조에서의 기독교 주도권은 기존의 인식과 일치하지만, 최소한 지역 하부구조의 경우에는 그보다 더 다양한 층위로의 기독교인 참여가 눈에 띄며 그 규모와 강도도 중앙에 비해 감소한다는 것이다.
본 논문은 일제강점기 경기도(한성부 포함)의 기독교 3·1운동 사례 전체를 조사하여 서울과 개성 외에 양주의 송촌리, 강화의 강화읍과 온수리, 고양의 마포, 수원의 수원읍, 진위의 평택 회화리 의거를 전형적인 교회 주도 만세 시위로 꼽았고, 또 수원의 우정면․장안면․향남면 의거와 부천의 황어장터 시위 등 다른 세력과 연대하여 운동의 시너지를 극대화한 유형에도 주목하였다. 또 기독교인들이 주동자로 참여한 형태의 시위도 있었는데, 이것이 그 중 가장 많은 수를 차지한다.

영어초록

Seoul was the birthplace of the March 1 Movement where the Christian representatives of the people were active. The members of churches and schools established by three stations in Seoul banded together actively and joined in the demonstrations at the Pagoda Park and Namdaemun, exercising their leadership to the full and fulfilling their responsibilities and duties. Since then, it became an important ground for the representativeness of Christianity in March 1 Movement. In Gaeseong where a station of Southern Methodist Church was situated, the schools and churches within the parish served as important driving force in the noble local uprising just like in Seoul. Such cases, however, show a somewhat different pattern at the Kun level around the Gyeonggi Province. There were cases in which local churches and Christians took the strong lead in March 1 Movement like Suwon and Gangwha, but more cases were observed in which Christians took part in the movement as leaders or joined forces with others at the local church level. In a word, the Christian leadership in the upper structure of the center in March 1 Movement matched the previous perceptions, but the lower structure at the local level at least displayed Christians' participation in more diverse layers and their smaller size and intensity than the center.
This study conducted research on the entire cases of Christian participation in March 1 Movement in Gyeonggi Province(including Hanseongbu) during the Japanese rule and identified a group of typical Church-led independence demonstrations in addition to those in Seoul and Gaeseong including the noble uprisings in Songchon-ri of Yangju, Ganghwa-eup and Onsu-ri of Ganghwa, Mapo of Goyang, Suwon-eup of Suwon, and Pyeongtaek Hoihwa-ri of Jinwi. Attention was also paid to the type of maximum synergy in the Movement in conjunction with other forces including the noble uprisings in Woojeong-, Jangan- and Hyangnam-myeon of Suwon and Hwangeo Marketplace of Bucheon and the demonstration in Wongok-myeon of Anseong. There were also demonstrations in which Christians participated as leaders, and they accounted for the biggest proportion of all.
