최근 한강 이남에서 발견된 고구려계 고분 (A Study on the Newly Discovered Koguryo-style Tombs in the South Region of the Han River)

초록

475년 고구려의 한성공략 이후 한강유역과 한강 이남지방에 대한 고구려의 영역지배방식과 관련하여 학계의 논란이 있어 왔다. 일반적으로는 고구려가 한강유역에서 남한강, 금강 유역에 이르기까지 정치적, 군사적으로 실질적인 지배력을 행사해 온 것으로 받아들여져 왔다. 그러나 관련 문헌기록상의 불일치와 이 지역에서 확인되는 고구려 유적과 유물의 예가 매우 적기 때문에 이에 대한 반론 또한 있어 왔다. 특히 고구려의 지배를 증명할 수 있는 매장유적의 부재는 이러한 반론의 주요한 논거로 사용되었다.
그런데 최근 경기 남부 일대와 충북 충주 일원에서 그동안 확인되지 않았던 고구려계의 고분이 잇달아 발견되면서 이 지역에 대한 고구려의 정치적, 군사적 지배를 확인할 수 있는 새로운 전기가 마련되었다. 이 글에서는 최신 자료를 소개하고 고분의 구조적 특성과 출토유물의 분석을 통해 고분의 고고학적 의미를 검토하였다.
유적의 입지와 구조적 특징, 그리고 유물의 특징으로 보아 발견된 고분들은 고구려의 특성을 지닌 것으로 판단되며, 그 시기는 대략 5세기 후반대로 추정된다. 그러나 이 고분들은 군집되어 있지 않고 대부분 단독으로 입지하고 있으며, 축조방식도 정연하지 못하다. 또한 출토된 유물들의 연대의 시간폭도 매우 짧다. 게다가 고구려 성곽들의 입지를 고려해 본다면 발견된 유적들은 주 교통로 상에 위치한다. 따라서 현재까지의 자료들을 종합해 볼 때, 한강 이남에 남겨진 고구려 유적들은 여전히 고구려인의 장기 거주를 증명해 주지는 못하며, 반면 고구려의 군사적 공격과 후퇴의 과정에서 단기간에 남겨진 군사적 활동과 관련된 물질문화의 흔적이라고 생각된다.

영어초록

There are many academic controversies for the territorial ruling system of Koguryo(高句麗) in the south region of the Han River, since Koguryo attacked Hanseong Bakje(漢城百濟) in 475. Generally, it has been understood that Koguryo dominated whole area of the Han River and the Geum River with political and military power. Because of inconsistency of documentations and lack of remains of Koguryo in this region, especially Koguryo tombs, there are other kind of opposing argument against this general theory. The absence of the burial remains that could verify the rulings of Koguryo were used for the major grounds for such objections in particular.
However, with the consecutive discoveries of unconfirmed Koguryo-style tombs in the southern Gyeonggi-do and Chungju, Chungcheongbuk-do, a new turning point has been prepared to confirm the political and military controls of Koguryo for these regions. This paper introduces the most recent information that has been discovered to examine what archaeological significances are held through the analysis of excavated relics and the structural properties of the tombs.
From observing the site of the relics, structural properties and the properties of relics, I stress that those tombs have unique Koguryo-style and the period is estimated as approximately the late 5th century. However, those tombs were not gathered for the majority of them to be independently positioned and the construction methods are not in an orderly manner. Moreover, the time range of periods for the excavated relics are very short. Furthermore, the discovered relics are unable to verify the long-term residence of Koguryo people when considering the location of the Koguryo fortress and are mostly located on the traffic route. Hence, it is considered that the Koguryo relics left in the south region of the Han River are in relation with military activities and are the traces of material culture left behind during a short period during the process of Koguryo’s military attack and retreat when synthesizing the information that have been gathered so far.
