통일신라 開元三年(715)銘 石造一莖三尊三世佛立像에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Statue of Standing Tri-Loka Buddhas in One Stone of Unified Shilla, Dated Third Year of Kai-Yuan(715 A.D.))

초록

통일신라시대에서 불교는 교학사상과 더불어 활발한 미술활동을 전개시켰다. 그런만큼 신앙도 널리 확산되어 다양한 사례를 남기고 있다. 당시에 조성된 불교미술품 가운데 불상조각은 이러한 사조를 잘 반영하고 있는데, 一莖三尊佛 양식의 새로운 석조불상 자료를 실견하는 기회를 갖게 되었다. 이 자료는 절대연대를 밝혀주는 銘文을 비롯하여 석조삼존불상의 독특한 조형양식과 조각수법으로 주목되는 바가 크다.
삼세불입상 즉 「開元三年(715)銘石造一莖三尊三世佛立像」이 그것이다. 이에는 당시에 조성된 불상조각의 흐름을 말해주듯이 특출한 조각수법 및 양식적 특징과 함께 銘文이 새겨져 있다. 재질은 鐘乳石으로 높이 42.6 × 넓이 29.7 × 깊이 11.7cm가 되는 장방형이다. 전면에 명문이 새겨진 基臺部위에 蓮華臺座를 갖추고 있는 삼존불입상은 중앙의 主尊佛이 31.5cm, 좌우의 脇侍佛이 각각 25.5, 25.0cm로 조성되어 있다.
하나의 돌에 붙어 있으므로 一石三尊이다. 이른바 一莖三尊양식을 갖춘 이 불상은 명문에 의하면 「대당 개원 3년 4월 5일에 유거는 아버지를 위하여 삼가 삼세불 1구를 짓는다(維大唐開元三年四月五日氵文刂 居爲父敬造三世佛一軀)」고 하여 715년에 조성되었음을 분명히 하고 있다. 삼세불의 명칭은 비교적 오래된 사례인데, 본존불의 手印은 여의주를 든 施無畏印에 與願印이며 좌우협시불은 合掌印을 짓고 있다.
삼존불입상과 양식상 전체적으로 가장 닮은 형태를 갖추어 있는 불상으로는 국보 제82호로 지정되어 있는 「甘山寺阿彌陀如來像」을 들 수 있을 것이다. 이는 719년이라는 조상명문을 남기고 있어서 절대연대를 밝혀주고 있다. 「감산사아미타여래상」이 통일신라 초기의 형태에서 벗어나 새로운 양식으로 발전하는 시대를 가름하는 작품이라면 삼세불입상 또한 이에 비견할 수 있을 것이다.
특히 삼세불입상의 조상명은 불상조성의 연기를 기록한 것이지만 이를 통해 당시 사람들의 신앙사상에 대한 습속을 엿볼 수 있다. 조성양식 가운데 광배를 비롯하여 腰帶 등은 「拜里禪房寺三尊佛立像」과의 親緣性을 강하게 드러내 보이고 있다. 이와같은 삼세불입상이 갖는 친연성을 검토하면 『배리선방사삼존불입상』의 조성시기 뿐만 아니라, 이를 전후하여 이루어진 일련의 불상에 대한 양식의 변천을 밝히는 데도 기준점을 제공받을 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

After unification of the Three Kingdoms, Buddhism in unified Shilla had developed its activity of art as well as flourishing doctrinal study. Due to that, faith also widely spread and remained various cases. While Buddha statues created at the era explains such current, a style of statue of Tri-Loka Buddhas in one stone has newly introduced. This statue is worthy to pay attention for including engraved resource which clarifies exact date, unique style and remarkable carving.
This statue of Tri-Loka Buddha can named "the statue of standing Tri-Loka Buddha in one stone, dated Third Year(715 A.D.) of Kai-Yuan." In this statue, inscription has engraved as well as special method of carving and characteristic style showing the current of the age. The material is granite stalactite stone, and the figure is rectangular, size of 42.6 × 29.7 × 11.7cm in hight, width and depth, respectively. Inscription had engraved at the front of base part, lotus flower had engrave at platform part, and 31.5cm hight of main Buddha and 25.5cm and 25cm hight of two supporting Buddhas are engraved in a line.
This statue is made of one stone. In this statue, a style of three Buddhas statues in one stone, the inscription clearly shows the date as 715 A.D. by statement of "On fifth April third year of Kai Yuan of T'ang dynasty, Yoo-Geo made a stone statue of Tri-Loka Buddhas for respectful father(維大唐開元三年四月五日瀏居爲父敬造三世佛一軀)." The name of Tri-Loka Buddhas can be trace older. Main Buddha holds Yeo-Ei-Ju(skt. cintāmaṇi, eng. thought-gem) by right hand with mudra(hand sign) of Si-Mu-Oe-In(salvation from suffering), his left hand exhibits mudra of Yeo-Won-In(give one's wish), and two supporting Buddhas are standing with mudra of Hap-Jang-In(joined hands).
The closest style with this statue of Tri-Loka Buddhas is the Amitabha Buddha in Gam-San-Sa templewhich is designated as national treasure No. 82. The latter clarifies its exact date of 719 A.D. by engraved inscription. It is said that the Amitabha Buddha in Gam-San-Sa temple which is developed from the style of early unified Shilla to new modality and a work of drawing line between ages. Then, this stone statue of Tri-Loka Buddhas can be compared to that.
Though inscription had described its origin, with this, we can look through folkways of belief of people of the age. Among the figures of the statue, its gloriole and belt strongly displays close relation to the stone statues of three standing Buddhas in Bae-Ri Seon-Bang-Sa Temple. Moreover, further study of this statue and its connection not only reveals the estimated manufacturing date of the stone statues of three standing Buddhas in Bae-Ri, but also is able to suggest cardinal point for change of modality of Buddha status of before and after.
