『六祖壇經』과 <西遊記>가 보여주는 불교의 사상과 수행 (Buddhist thought and practice expressed in Journey to the West and the Platform Sutra of the Six Patriarch)

초록

선종은 見性成佛을 종지로 삼고 있다. 자신의 마음을 직관하는 수행을 통해 마음의 본바탕을 깨달아 열반에 이르기 위해 정진하는 것을 가장 큰 목적으로 두고 있다.
전통 유교교육과 도교사상에 영향 받았던 우청언(吳承恩)도 참선수행을 하며 말년을 보냈다. <서유기>를 집필했을 당시 이미 불교의 선사상에 많은 영향을 받았을 것이다. 그렇기에 불타가 되는 것을 목적으로 하는 육조혜능의 『六祖大師法寶壇經』을 이해하고, <서유기>를 창작하는데 있어 사상적으로 융합하기 쉬었을 것이다.
혜능과 그가 설한 『육조단경』은 자신의 수행을 통해서 불타가 되는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. <서유기> 또한 空을 타파하고 마음속의 우매한 번뇌를 제거해가며 부처가 될 수 있는 佛性을 깨달아 정각을 이룬다는 것이다.
『육조단경』의 주요 사상은 『금강경』을 바탕으로 한 空思想이다. 『금강경』은 부처님이 수보리에게 설한 공사상을 담고 있다. 손오공을 깨우쳐 주는 스승 또한 수보리이다. 수보리는 부처님의 제자 중의 한 사람이며 空을 잘 이해하여 ‘解空第一’이라 불린다. 悟空이 깨닫는 것이 空性이라는 것을 암시해 주기도 한다. <서유기>에 등장하는 불교사상은 반야사상이다. 반야란 空思想을 통해 궁극적으로 인간이 깨달음을 얻어 행복을 얻게 하는 경전이다. 모든 존재의 본성 즉 ‘佛性’은 ‘空性’으로서 이는 수행자가 수행을 통하여 얻으려는 목적이다. <서유기>에서도 자신의 본모습에 도달했을 때 비로소 마음속의 번뇌로 부터 벗어나 空寂하여 자유롭게 변화하는 인연을 따르게 된다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 즉 <서유기>에 등장하는 인물들도 마음속의 번뇌와 무관하지 않다는 것이다.
본고에서는 이러한 <서유기>에 나타나는 空性, 見性을 통하여 수행을 완성해 가는 과정을 『육조단경』을 주요 자료로 하여 중점적으로 고찰하고자 하였다. 여기서는 육조혜능의 사상과 손오공의 사상을 비교하는 것이 아니라 단지 우청언이 <서유기>를 집필하는데 있어 얼마나 『육조단경』을 이해하고 <서유기>를 창작하였는가에 중점을 두고자 한다.

영어초록

Zen Buddhism(禪宗) follows 'Seeing one's true nature and attaining the Buddhahood(見性成佛)' as its main objective. The primary purpose of Zen Buddhism is at the realization of the essence of mind through an intuitive practice of one's mind and thereafter enter into the state of nirvana.
Influenced by the traditional Confucius education and Taoism, Wu Cheng'en concentrated in Zen meditation in his later years. When he was writing the Journey to the West, he already was influenced by Zen thought of Buddhism. From there he apprehended the Six Patriarch Hui-neng's the Platform Sutra of the Six Patriarch ([Ch. liùzǔ dàshī fǎbǎo tán jīng] 『六祖大師法寶壇經』) which aims to become the Buddha through one's practices. Therefore, it would be easier for Wu Cheng'en in applying the specific thought of the Platform Sutra of the Six Patriarch into the Journey to the West.
The purpose of Hui-neng and his writing, the Platform Sutra of the Six Patriarch, is to encourage oneself to become the Buddha through its own practice. The Journey to the West also delivers that awakening the Buddha-Nature to become a Buddha through eliminating ignorant desire and breaking free from Emptiness.
The main thought of the Platform Sutra of the Six Patriarch is the theory of Emptiness based upon the Diamond Sutra. The Diamond Sutra contains the theory of Emptiness which was preached to Subhuti(須菩提) by the Buddha. The one who enlightens Sun Wukong is also Subhuti. Subhuti is one of Buddha's disciples and he is recognized as having the profound understanding on the theory of emptiness thus he is even noted as 'Born of Emptiness(解空第一)'. This also implies that the understandings of what Wukong attained is the nature of the void(空性). Prajñā is the only Buddhist idea appeared in the Journey to the West. Prajñā-thought makes people happy through promoting the theory of emptiness so that they could be enlightened. The true nature of every species, the Buddha-Nature or the Nature of the Void, is what an ascetic tries to learn from its practice. The Journey to the West displays that when one reaches to its real image and then only, oneself could be free from the agony within its mind and with the complete voidness one could follow through freely changing relations. In other words, characters appearing in the Journey to the West are relevant to the agony within mind.
This paper tried to research the process of fulfilling performances through 'The nature of the void(空性)' and 'Seeing one's true nature(見性)' in the Journey to the West while considering it with the Platform Sutra of the Six Patriarch. This research is not about comparing the thought of the Six Patriarch Hui-neng and the thought of Sun Wukong; rather, it is about placing emphasis more on figuring out about Wu Cheng'en's comprehension on the The Platform Sutra of the Six Patriarch in writing the Journey to the West.
