山西省 平順縣 大雲院의 五代 <維摩經變相圖> 연구 (A Study of the Vimalakirti Sutra Illustration of Dayun Temple in Shanxi Province, China)

초록

중국 山西省 平順縣에 위치한 大雲院의 彌陀殿 동벽에는 五代에 그려진 <유마경변상도>가 그려져 있다. 중국에서는 南北朝時代 이래부터 『유마경』의 내용을 도해한 조각과 부조를 찾아 볼 수 있으며 다양한 문헌기록을 통해 벽화의 형태로도 즐겨 그려졌던 주제임을 알 수 있다. 특히 이 작품은 중원에 현전하는 唐代 및 五代의 벽화 가운데 사찰 벽면에 그려진 가장 이른 시기의 경변상도라는 점에서 중요한 의미를 지닌다.
이 벽화는 五代인 940년에 건립된 미타전에 그려졌다는 점과 작품의 화풍을 통해 五代의 벽화로 알려져 왔으나 작품의 양식에 대한 구체적인 분석이 이루어진 바가 없었다. 따라서 본 고에서는 동시기 中原 및 돈황석굴 벽화와의 면밀한 비교를 통해 이 그림의 제작 시기가 五代임을 명확히 하였다. 비록 동시기에 그려진 벽화의 사례가 많지는 않지만 大雲院 벽화에 보이는 보살의 상호 및 비천의 표현뿐만 아니라 불국토와 구름의 형상에서도 동시기 작품과의 유사성이 보인다.
이와 더불어 五代 돈황석굴 <유마경변상도>와의 비교를 통해 두 작품 간의 유사성보다는 차이점에 주목하여 大雲院 <유마경변상도>의 특징을 크게 두 가지로 정리하였다. 大雲院과 돈황 벽화 사이에는 주요 도상을 공유하는 양상을 확인할 수 있었으나 유마와 문수의 옆으로 석가모니를 배치시킨 독특한 화면구도를 보이는 점과 주요장면을 선별하고, 산수와 구름을 이용하여 화면에 공간감을 부여하며, 세부도상의 표현을 간략화하여 작품의 주제를 부각시키고 있는 점에서 동시기 돈황석굴의 <유마경변상도>와는 대별되는 특징을 지니고 있다.
대운원 <유마경변상도>는 비록 화면에 손상이 있긴 하지만 중원에 현존하는 唐代 및 五代의 벽화 가운데 사찰에 그려진 가장 이른 시기의 경변상도이자 변방에 위치한 돈황 벽화에 비해 회화성이 뛰어나며 도상 간의 유기적인 화면 구성을 보이는 작품으로 중원의 五代 사찰벽화 전통을 살펴볼 수 있는 중요한 사례이다.

영어초록

A mural from the Five Dynasties illustrating the Vimalakirti Sutra(維摩經變相圖) is painted on the east wall of the Amitabha hall in the Dayun Temple(大雲院), located at Pingshun County(平順縣) in Shanxi Province(山西省), China. The tradition of depicting the debate between Vimalakirti and Manjusri has existed as early as the Northern and Southern Dynasties(386-589). This mural in the Dayun Temple is especially a significant work of art as it is the earliest sutra illustration among the surviving Buddhist murals of the Central China

This mural is believed to be from the Five Dynasties based on the construction date of the Amitabha hall(940) and its style of painting. However, a comprehensive analysis on its style and form has not been previously conducted. Thus, this paper aims to verify that the mural was produced in the Five Dynasties period through a comparative and detailed stylistic analysis with contemporary murals at Dunhuang cave temple as well as with works of art from the Central China. Despite the lack of mural paintings from the same period, there are similarities with the contemporary paintings as seen in the facial expression of bodhisattvas, the figure of apsaras, and the portrayals of the Buddha Land and clouds.




In addition, this paper summarizes two major characteristics of the Dayun Temple mural by differentiating between the Vimalakirti Sutra illustrations of the Dayun Temple and of the Dunhuang. While both murals share some iconography, the Dayun Temple mural has the following characteristics that distinguish it from the Dunhuang murals of the same period. First, the Dayun Temple mural has an unusual composition which places Shakyamuni's preaching scene beside the main debating scene between Vimalakirti and Manjusri. Second, it emphasizes the main theme of the Vimalakirti Sutra by selecting major scenes and creating a sense of space and depth through representation of landscape and clouds while simplifying representation of minor scenes.




Although the Vimalakirti Sutra illustration at the Dayun Temple is partially damaged on the surface, it remains an important work as it is the earliest sutra illustration among the surviving murals of the Central China from the Tang and the Five Dynasties period. Furthermore, compared with the murals at Dunhuang, it exhibits outstanding pictorial representation and organic composition representing the Buddhist mural tradition of the Central China in the Five Dynasties.
