초록

이 논문은 ‘『화엄경』 「보현삼매품」에 담긴 선정사상’에 대하여 중국 화엄주석서를 중심으로 살펴본 글이다. 『화엄경』에는 다양한 삼매들이 설해져 있는데, 「보현삼매품」에도 조금은 독특한 一切諸佛毘慮遮那如來藏身삼매가 교설되어 있다. 이 삼매는 보현보살이 선정의 상태에서 부처님의 위신력으로 끝없는 지혜와 올바른 삼매로 중생을 위해 설법한 품이라 할 수 있다. 이 품의 구성은 來意, 釋名, 宗趣, 경문의 釋文의 4가지와 세부적으로 크게 6가지 단락이다. 그리고 여기서 설해진 삼매는 광명으로 낱낱이 두루 비추는 법성의 본체로 온갖 법을 갈무리한 지혜로 나타나는 비로자나여래장신이다. 이 삼매의 특징은 理智로 갖가지 敎行의 광명으로 중생의 근기를 비추어서 근기에 따라 이익을 주며, 일체제불이 비로자나여래의 몸을 태아(胎兒)로 갈무리하는 삼매이다. 따라서 이 품에 담긴 선정사상의 핵심은 보현이 삼매 속에서 시방의 모든 佛들로부터 온갖 지혜를 얻고, 佛의 깨달음의 세계를 설해 보현의 힘으로 법회에 모인 대중들도 보현보살과 함께 삼매에 들어서 설법을 들을 수 있는 지혜와 유익한 공덕을 얻도록 중생을 교화하고 있다는 데 있다. 결국 이 품에서 삼매를 설한 목적은 일체제불이 설주 보현을 내세워 미혹에 빠져 있는 모든 중생을 교화하기 위한 과정으로서 삼매입정과 출정 등의 모습을 보여 佛世界에 들어갈 수 있음을 보여준 하나의 방편이다. 왜냐하면 보현보살은 늘 삼매에 있지만, 중생을 교화하기 위해, 같고 다름의 모습을 가려서 중생의 業의 과보와 부처님이 행하시는 업의 과보를 잘 가려내기 때문에 반드시 삼매에 입정과 출정을 한 후에 佛의 위신력으로 교설하고 있기 때문이다.

영어초록

This study examines the Idea of Jhana contained in 「Bohyeonsammaepum」 of 『The Avatamska Sutra』 focusing on Chinese footnotes for Hwaeom.
『The Avatamska Sutra』, one of the early Mahayana sutras, preaches about samadhi in several ways, and 「Bohyeonsammaepum」, too, deals with Ilchejebulbirojanayeoraejangsin (一切諸佛毘慮遮那如來藏身) samadhi which is a little unique. This samadhi is the pum preached by Samantabhadra in the state of Jhana for the people through endless wisdom and righteous samadhi grounded on Buddha’s power of dignity. This pum consists of four parts, original meanings (來意), the interpretation of names (釋名), fundamental teachings (宗趣), and analysis on Buddhist scriptures (釋文), and in detail, it has largely six paragraphs. Samadhi preached here is the true nature of Buddha’s teachings shedding light on each part of the world and is Birojanayeoraejangsin revealed as wisdom embracing all sorts of teachings. This samadhi is characterized by reasoning power (理智), and through the light of all kinds of teaching deeds (敎行), it shines on the religious qualities of the people and benefits them according to the qualities. It is samadhi that Ilchejebul finishes things off with the body of Birojanayeorae as its fetus (胎兒). In other words, through that samadhi, Tathagata exists evenly in the world, and the world comes to exist as Tathagata. Therefore, the key point in the idea of Jhana contained in this pum is that Samantabhadra gains all sorts of wisdom from all the Buddhas (佛) from ten directions within samadhi, preaches about the world of Buddha (佛)’s enlightenment, and reforms the people so that they gathering in the Buddhist ceremony can also enter the state of samadhi along with Samantabhadra through his power and attain the wisdom and beneficial merit and virtue to hear the preaching. The noteworthy features of samadhi preached in this pum include Cheyong of Jhana, Gapi in Jhana, Chungjeong (出定) sammaemun and samadhi benefits, and splendid samadhi merit and virtue attributed to the light of Taryeok. Consequently, the reason why samadhi is preached in this pum is that it is one of the ways to show the aspects of samadhi ipjeong and culjeong as a process of Ilchejebul to reform all creatures falling in delusion and tell any of the people can enter the world of Buddha (佛世界) having the preacher of Samantabhadra in the front. It is because Samantabhadra always exists in the state of samadhi but preaches with Buddha’s power of dignity after samadhi iljeong and culjeong necessarily as he can distinguish what are the same and different and well differentiate the outcomes of the people’s karma from those of Buddha’s deeds to reform the people.
