여헌 역학사상의 경위설과 분합론의 도덕실천적 의미 (The Problem of Continuity between Theory of Longitude and Latitude and Theory of Division and Union in Yeoheon Jang Hyeon-gwang's Yixue)

초록

이 글은 조선 중기에 역학사상을 기초로 성리학의 여러 개념과 이론을 심층적으로 해명하였던 여헌(旅軒) 장현광(張顯光, 1554~1637)의 경위설과 분합론이 어떤 도덕실천적 의미를 갖는가를 해명하였다. 구체적으로 그가 제시한 역학사상의 핵심 뼈대를 이루는 경위설(經緯說)과 분합론(分合論)을 통하여 자연적 질서와 도덕적 질서가 어떻게 연결되는가를 분석하였다. 여헌은 무극(無極)과 태극(太極)이 현상 사물을 낳기 이전과 이후를 포괄하여 예측할 수 없는 무궁한 변화를 낳는 근원이면서 작용을 모두 내포하고 있다고 보았다. 리와 기는 도(道)의 경위가 되면서 동시에 상호적으로 기(氣)의 경(經), 리(理)의 위(緯)가 되어 일관된 통일적 연속성을 갖는다. 그의 이러한 관점은 현상과 본체계를 위계적으로 구분하는 세계관으로부터 현상과 본체가 수평적 연속성을 가지며 변화와 불변이 상함(相含) 관계 속에서 유기적으로 영향을 주고받는다고 이해하는 것이다. 여헌은 분합 개념을 여러 역학적 개념과 괘효에 적용하여 그 자연법칙적 도덕실천적 의미를 연역하였다. 그는 「사덕오행분합(四德五行分合)」에서 『주역』「건괘(乾卦)」에 나오는 ‘원형이정’(元亨利貞)의 사덕(四德)과 오행(五行)을 분합(分合)의 관점에서 해석하였다. 또한 ‘오행수의 상생상극으로의 순환’과 ‘기우생성수(奇偶生成數)의 배치 방위’를 기준으로 「하도」와 「낙서」가 번갈아 체(體)와 용(用)이 바뀌는 것으로 이해하였다. 이기(理氣)에 적용된 경위(經緯)는 도(道)와 덕(德)을 닦는 학문의 경지, 천지의 운행법칙, 그리고 제왕의 치도(治道)에까지 확대하였다. 여헌은 분합론의 ‘합일(合)’과 ‘나뉨(分)’ 개념 또한 도덕적 가치지향과 심성론적 수양을 함축한다고 보았고, 경(敬) 또한 ‘의(義)’, ‘성(誠)’ 등과 연관하여 분합론으로 해석하였는데, 경(敬)과 성(誠)은 수양의 과정에 시종일관하는 덕(德)이나 도(道)이다. 그는 성리학의 형이상학적 본체론과 심성론 및 수양론과 연관된 여러 개념 쌍들이 ‘분합(分合)’이라는 의미 속에 자연적 질서와 도덕적 당위 및 실천 원리를 내포하고 있음을 해명하고자 하였다. 요컨대, 여헌의 경위설과 분합론은 본체와 현상, 자연과 도덕, 법칙과 당위를 수평적 차원에서 연속성을 가지고 설명해 줄 수 있는 이론적 틀이다.

영어초록

This article seeks to explain the continuity of the theory of separation and union and the theory of longitude and latitude of Yeoheon(旅軒) Jang Hyeon-gwang (張顯光,1554–1637), who tried to explain various concepts and theories of Neo-Confucianism in depth based on YiXue(易學) thought in the mid-Joseon period. This is to analyze how the natural order and the moral order are explained as having a continuous meaning through the theory of separation and union and the theory of longitude and latitude. Yeoheon mentioned that Mu-geuk[無極] and Tae-geuk[太極] are both the source of unpredictable and infinite change, including before and after the birth of the phenomenal thing, and contain both functions.
He saw that Li(理) and Chi(氣) became the inspectors of the Way and, at the same time, mutually became the sutras of chi and 緯 of li, and thus had a coherent and unified continuity. This view of Jang Hyeon-kwang is from a world view that hierarchically divides phenomena and body systems, and understands that phenomena and bodies have horizontal continuity and that change and invariance are organically influenced and influenced in a mutually exclusive relationship. Hyeon-Kwang Chang applied the concept of division and union to various Yixue concepts and hexagram and lines to deduce the meaning of natural law and moral practice. Through the discussion on 「The division of the four virtues and the five elements(四德五行分合)」, he discusses the four virtues and the five elements of the 'OnehyeongYijeong(元亨利貞)' in the Change Books Keon Gue(乾卦) was analyzed from the perspective of division. Also, it is understood that 「Hado(河圖)」 and 「Nakseo(洛書)」 change into body and operation alternately based on 'Circulation of the Five Elements to the Win-Win and Sanggeuk' and 'arrangement bearing of odd and even generation numbers.
Jang Hyeon-gwang extended longitude and latitude[經緯] applied to the principle and material forces[理氣] to the realm of learning that cultivates the Way and virtue, the rules of operation of heaven and earth, and the rule of kings. In Jang Hyeon-gwang, not only the concept of longitude and latitude[經緯], but also the concepts of unification and divide(分合) of the division theory also have implications for moral value orientation and spiritual cultivation. Jang Hyeon-gwang interpreted the word of Genuine[敬] as a theory of division in relation to righteousness[義] and sincerity[誠] virtue or the way. Genuine and sincerity are virtues or tao that are consistent from beginning to end in the process of cultivation.
As a whole, he tried to explain that the various concept pairs related to the metaphysical body theory of Neo-Confucianism and the theory of mentality and discipline contain natural order, moral imperative, and practical principles in the meaning of separation and union. In short, Yeoheon's theory is a theoretical framework that can explain the body and phenomena, nature and morality, laws and justifications in a horizontal dimension with continuity. In addition, the theory of division and union has important theoretical characteristics that can be understood as having continuity between nature and morality, including the theory of selfishness, discipline, and moral practice.
