『능엄경』의 이근원통과 염불원통의 특성에 대한 비교 고찰 (A Comparative Consideration on the Special Characteristics of the Igeunwontong and the Yeombulwontong of the 'Shurangama Sutra')

초록

본 논문은 『능엄경』의 이근원통(耳根圓通)과 염불원통(念佛圓通)이 갖는 특수성에 기인하여 두 원통법에 대한 경문 내용을 분석하고, 『능엄경』의 내용에 담긴 수행체계와 사상적 논리구조를 통해서 두 원통법의 의미와 적합성을 살펴보고자 한다.
관세음보살의 이근원통은 이근(耳根)을 통하여 문성(聞性)을 관조(觀照)함으로써 망심(妄心)을 유발하는 모든 경계를 해제하는 반문자성(反聞自性)의 방법이다. 대세지보살의 염불원통은 육근(六根)을 모두 포섭(包攝)하여 오로지 아미타불에 대한 정념(淨念)을 통한 견불(見佛)을 지향한다. 양자는 둘 다 적극적인 대승의지를 선양하고 선정에 들기 위해 각자 가장 수승한 공덕을 지닌 근(根)을 선택하였다는 점에서 공통점을 갖는다.
『능엄경』에서 최종적으로 선택되는 원통은 이근원통이다.
관세음보살의 이근원통이 수승한 이유는 처음부터 문성(聞性)을 관(觀)하여 생멸심(生滅心)에 의지하지 않으며, 육결(六結)의 단계를 거쳐 생사와 번뇌의 근본을 풀어가는 등의 수행의 내용이 『능엄경』에서 제시하는 수행차제를 가장 충실히 따르고 있기 때문이다대세지보살의 염불원통은 인지(因地)에서 아미타불에 대한 일념(一念)을 들고 있고, 아미타불에 대한 절대적 믿음을 강조한다. 그러나 『능엄경』의 기준으로는 문수보살이 지적했듯이 여래에 대한 일념조차 망상이고 생멸심에 의지 한 것이다.
『능엄경』에서 요구하는 수행의 원칙은 수행의 시작과 목적을 명확하게 인식하고 두 가지 결정의(決定義) 즉 인지(因地)와 과지(果地)를 일치시키되 문제의 근본에서 해탈의 열쇠를 찾는 것이다.

영어초록

This thesis intends to analyze the contents of the Buddhist scriptures regarding the two wontong laws that came from the specialness that is possessed by the Igeunwontong and the Yeombulwontong of the Shurangama Sutra (The Sutra of the Heroic One), and it intends to take a look at the meanings and the suitabilities of the two wontong laws through the performance system and the ideological logic structure that are contained in the content of the Shurangama Sutra.
The Igeunwontong of the Avalokitesvara Guan Yin (the (Buddhist) Goddess of Mercy) is a method that counter-questions the self-examination that lifts all of the boundary lines that induces the spiritual distinguishing by contemplating the munseong through the igeun. By winning over all of the yukgeun, the Yeombulwontong of the Daesejibosal aims at the gyeonbul through only the jeongnyeom regarding the Amitabha. The two have the commonality with regard to the point that both of them enhance the aggressive will for the great victory and that each of them selected the geun that possesses the most extraordinary charity in order to make the selection.
The wontong that is finally selected in the Shurangama Sutra is the Igeunwontong.
The reason why the Igeunwontong of the Avalokitesvara Guan Yin is very extraordinary is because, from the beginning, it does not rely on the mind of the birth and the death in relation to the munseong and because the content of the performance that solves the fundamentals of the life and death and the anguish by going through the phase of the yukgyeol and the others of the like has been most faithfully following the performance system that is presented in the Shurangama Sutra.
The Yeombulwontong of the Daesejibosal mentions the determination regarding the Amitabha in the Inji, and it emphasizes the absolute belief regarding the Amitabha. However, with the standard of the Shurangama Sutra, just as pointed out by the Bodhisattva of wisdom, even the determination regarding the Buddha is a delusion, and it had relied on the mind of the birth and the death.
The principle of the performance that is demanded by the Shurangama Sutra is that the beginning and the purpose of the performance are clearly and definitely recognized and that the two kinds of the determinations or, in other words, the inji and the gwaji, are made to coincide. Except, it is to find the key for the nirvana from the fundamental of the problem.
