    초록

Gyedong Jeon Kyung-chang(溪東 全慶昌) was a Confucian scholar who was born in Daegu in the mid-Chosun Dynasty. At the age of 24, he passed jinsasi(進士試), the first state examination for office. When he was 42, he passed gwageo(科擧), the highest-level state examination for civil service. After various government posts, he finally reached the position of jipyong(持平) in the Ministry of Saheonbu(司憲府). As a disciple of Toegye Yi Hwang(退溪 李滉), he became the first one to initiate Toegye Studies(退溪學) throughout the Daegu area. He didn t live long enough, though. At the age of 54, he passed away in Seoul away from home. Later on, when the Japanese Invasion of Korea(壬辰倭亂) broke out in 1592, most of his posthumous works were lost, leaving behind, in his collection of works, just one prose(賦), five verses(詩), three letters of appeal to the king(疏) and two miscellaneous articles(雜著).
Actually, it was from various writings of his colleagues that considerable data on him could be acquired. On the basis of such data, a chronology could be completed within this thesis so that it could help with further researches on his life, his learning, his lectures, his life as a civil servant and his influences on younger students.
The thesis divides his life into four phases and looks into his teacher-pupil relationships which cover from his teacher Toegye(退溪) to such Confucian scholars as Son Choe-null(孫處訥), Yi Joo(李輈), Seo Sa-won(徐思遠), Kwak Jae-gyum(郭再謙), Ryu Yo-shin(柳堯臣) and Jung Kwang-chon(鄭光天). His literary colleagues pursued studies at such lecture halls as Yeongyeong Seowon School(硏經書院), Sonsajae School(仙査齋) and Youngmodang School(永慕堂), elevating Confucianism in the Daegu area to a distinguished academic order. Jeon Kyung-chang provided a foundation for the Daegu Confucianism to open a dawn of the Renaissance.
The chronology in the thesis is mainly on Jeon Kyung-chang. However, it, at the same time, deals with his contemporary colleagues who were with him in the quest for academic scholarship, therefore providing knowledge on the flow and development of the Daegu Confucianism. Also included in the chronology are articles written by his older brother, his nephews and his daughters' descendants, since his academic scholarly works were succeeded by them along with his literary colleagues.
The chronology encompasses not only his 54 years of life but also the following 424 years after his death in an effort to organize those items involving him even after his passing. The fact that Confucianism in and around Daegu is still under his influence is another reason for the chronology to extend into his after-death periods. At the end of the thesis is a list of eulogies, both verses and proses, offered by the officials and friends in his memory after his death. The list of literary works referred in the making of the chronology is also available at the end of the thesis.
