초록

경기도 최초 근대교육은 1892년 내리교회 조원시(Rev.George Heber Jones) 목사 부인의 영화여학당 설립에서 비롯되었다. 초기에는 근대교육에 대한 인식부족과 주민들의 냉담한 반응으로 별다른 성과를 거둘 수 없었다. 교세 확장에 비례하여 학생 증가와 더불어 근대교육기관으로서 기틀도 마련할 수 있었다.
을사늑약 이후 위기의식은 근대교육 확산으로 귀결되었다. 더욱이 영화여학당·삼일여학당·정화여학교 등은 도내 여성교육을 선도함과 아울러 우리나라 근대여성교육 중심지였다. 이는 지역적인 차원을 넘어 여성들의 사회적인 존재성을 일깨우는 요인이었다.
일제의 식민지화 책동에 맞선 경기도 사립학교설립운동은 국권회복운동 일환으로 전개되었다. 의무교육론 확산은 당대인 참여를 유도하는 ‘기폭제’였다. 강화학무회·개성교육총회 등은 대표적인 단체였다. 강화도는 보창학교를 중심으로 도내 56개 학구에 지교를 설립하는 등 교육열을 고조시켰다. 이리하여 보창학교는 대한제국기를 대표하는 민족교육기관으로 발전을 거듭할 수 있었다.
연합운동회는 지역사회 여론 수렴장이자 시세변화를 체험하는 교육현장이었다. 군사훈련에 버금가는 병식체조나 기마전 등은 문무쌍전에 입각한 민족교육이 지향한 바를 제시하였다.식후 개최된 연설회·강연회 등은 부분적이나마 ‘사회적인 책무’를 느끼는 내용을 중심으로 진행되었다. 경쟁적으로 전개된 국채보상운동도 이와 같은 변화 속에서 전개될 수 있었다. 이는 지방자치제 시행을 위한 민지계발로 이어졌다. 더욱이 사노비 해방 등 신분제 폐지와 시대변화에 부응한 새로운 인간관
계 등은 이를 반증한다. 사립학교설립운동의 역사성은 바로 여기에 있다.

영어초록

The first modern education in Gyeonggi province originated from Younghwa Girls’ School established by Mrs. Johns(wife of a minister of Naeri Church, Wonsi Jo, Rev.George Heber Jones) in 1892. In the early stage she couldn’t bear fruit because of the lack of understanding of modern education and a cool response from residents. However, as religious influence expanded and the number of students increased, she could lay the foundation for a modern educational institution.
The sense of crisis after the second Korean-Japanese Agreement in 1905 concluded with the spread of the modern education. Younghwa girls’ school, Samil Girls’ School, Miriheum Girls’ School and others led the education of women in the province as well as were the center of the modern education of women in Korea. They became a factor to make women aware of their social existence going further than a regional level.
A campaign to establish private schools in Gyeonggi province confronting Japanese colonization maneuvers developed as part of restoration movement of national rights. The spread of the theory of compulsory education was a
detonator to induce people of the day to participate in the campaign. Ganghwahagmoohoi(Ganghwa Society of School Affairs), yoyookchonghoi(Gaeseong General Society of Education) were the leading organizations for the campaign. As private schools in Ganghwa island centering around Bochang School established 56 branch schools in 56 school districts, Gyeonggi province, desire for education became excited. Bochang School could repeatedly develop as a national educational institution representing
the period of the Korean Empire.
A joint sports meeting was the place for collecting public opinion of a community and a educational field to make participants experience the situation of the times. Military way of physical exercises like military drill and a mock cavalry battle and others at the joint sports meeting presented the way that national education based on the completion of scholarship and the marital arts aimed at. The contents of an oratorical meeting and a lecture meeting held after the sports meeting partially included social responsibility. A national debt compensation campaign spread competitively could progress under such a change and this was connected with the development of peoples’ intellect for the operation of local autonomy system. Furthermore, this is reflected by the abolition of a status system including liberation of private servants and new human relations responding to the changing of the times. This is the historical importance of the campaign to establish private schools.
