경기지역 메나리토리 향토민요의 종지형 고찰 (Contemplation of final tone types of Menaritori, the local folk song of Gyeonggi region)

초록

메나리토리는 우리나라 동부 지역의 대표적인 민요 토리이나, 동부에 국한되지 않고 경기와 충청․전라 등 넓은 지역에서 두루 나타남으로서, 우리나라 기층 음악인 민요에서 가장 넓은 분포를 이루고 있다. 특히, 경기 지역은 경토리를 주요 음악 어법으로 삼는 지역이지만, 향토민요에서는 경토리보다 메나리토리의 사용 비중이 더 높아, 농업노동요는 물론 어업노동요와 의식요에 이르기까지 다양한 기능의 민요에서 메나리토리로 선율을 이룬다. 그럼에도, 그간 메나리토리에 대한 연구는 주로 동부 지역에 한정되어 왔고, 그 외에 다른 지역에서 사용되는 메나리토리의 특징에 대해서는 구체적인 연구가 이루어지지 않았다.
본 연구는 향토민요에서 메나리토리를 매우 적극적으로 사용하는 경기 지역을 대상으로 종지음과 종지 선율 유형을 정리․분석한 것으로, 경기 지역에서는 “la→sol→mi”로 하행하여 메나리토리 음계의 기음인 ‘mi’음을 종지음으로 하는 경우가 가장 많았다. 그리고 이러한 종지형은 경기 전역에 고루 분포하며 농업노동요와 장례의식요 중 상여소리를 중심으로 여러 기능의 민요에서 존재하였다.
두 번째로 많이 사용되는 종지음은 ‘la’음으로, ‘la’종지는 어업노동요에서 특히 많이 사용된다. “la→mi→la→la”의 종지 선율이 빈번하나, 그 외에도 매우 다양한 종지 선율이 사용되며, 여러 종지형을 섞어 자유로우면서도 즉흥적인 형태를 띠는 곡들이 많고, 이러한 유동성이 어업노동요에서 두드러진다. 어업노동요에서 두드러지는 만큼, 지역적으로는 자연스럽게 서해안 인접 지역에 분포된다.
세 번째로 ‘do'’종지는 “la→do'”와 “mi→do'”로 3도 및 6도 상행하는 형태인데, 농업노동요 중 논매는소리에서도 드물게 사용되나 장례의식요 중 달구소리에서 빈번하고, 특히 “mi→do'”종지는 경기북부 지역의 달구소리에서만 발견되었다. 한편, 경기 지역 달구소리는 메나리토리와 함께 경토리 및 반경토리가 많이 사용되는 바, 메나리토리와 반경토리가 한 곡 안에서 경계가 불분명하게 섞여 음악 구조를 이루기도 하는데, 이러한 달구소리에서 사용되는 종지형이 바로 “do'→la→do'” 종지이다. 즉, 이 종지형은 메나리토리의 종지형에 포함시키기보다 반경토리의 영향에 따른 종지형으로 해석할 수 있다.
마지막으로 ‘sol’음으로 종지하는 악곡들도 있으나, ‘mi’종지에서 끝을 살짝 3도 상행하거나, ‘la’종지에서 끝을 살짝 흘리는 경우가 대부분이므로, ‘sol’음의 종지로서의 기능은 분명치 않다.
결과적으로, 경기 지역 메나리토리 향토민요의 종지음은 음계의 가장 낮은 기음인 ‘mi’음이 주를 이루고, 그에 이어 ‘la’음이 종지음으로 기능한다. 이들 두 음 ‘mi’와 ‘la’는 메나리토리의 기본 골격인 4도 구조를 이루는 두 음으로, 결국 경기 지역 메나리토리 향토민요의 종지음은 메나리토리 4도 기본 골격인 ‘mi’와 ‘la’ 두 음을 사용하고 있다고 하겠다. 그리고 그 중 주음인 ‘la’보다 4도 아래음인 ‘mi’음으로 종지하는 예가 더 두드러지는 점에서, 경기 지역 메나리토리 향토민요 종지형의 특징이 드러난다.

영어초록

Menaritori is a representative mode of folk song of the eastern region of our country. However, the boundary of Menaritori is not only limited within the eastern region (Hamgyong-do, Gangwon-do, Gyeongsang-do), but widely ranges throughout many regions such as Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheong-do and Jeolla-do, presenting the broadest distribution in folk song, the music of our country’s common people. In particular, Gyeonggi-do is the region which uses Gyeongtori as a tonal mode, but in local folk songs, Menaritori is more frequently used than Gyeongtori.




This study has arranged and analyzed final tones and final melody types oriented to Gyeonggi-do region where Menaritori is actively used in local folk songs.




In Gyeonggi-do region, the most frequent final tone was set with “mi”, the lowest tone of Menaritori scale by descending “la→sol→mi”. This kind of final tone type is evenly distributed throughout Gyeonggi-do region, and existed in different functions of folk songs such as farmers’ labor songs and Sangyeosori (a song sung while carrying a bier) of funeral ritual songs.




The second-most frequent final tone is “la”, and it is particularly used in fishermen’s labor songs with frequency. The most common final tone “la→mi→la→la” but there are diverse types of final tones apart from this. We can observe many melodies which have free and extemporary forms mixed with many final tones, and this flexibility stands out in fishermen’s labor songs. For the same reason, these melodies are naturally distributed in the region adjacent to the western area.




In the third place, the final tone “do'” has an ascending form to “la→do'” and “mi→do'” by 3 intervals and 6 intervals. Among farmers’ labor songs, it is rarely used in Nonmaeneunsori but it is much more frequent in Dalgusori (a song sung while tramping the earth to harden the soil around the coffin after lowering a coffin into the grave) among other funeral ritual songs. In particular, the final tone “mi→do'” was discovered only in Dalgusori of the northern area of Gyeonggi-do. On the other hand, Dalgusori of Gyeonggi-do uses not only Menaritori but also Gyeongtori and Bangyeongtori, for this reason, sometimes we can observe that the tonal structure is composed by ambiguous combination boundary in the same melody between Menaritori and Bangyeongtori. The final tone type used in this Dalgusori is this final tone of “do'→la→do'”. In other words, this final tone type can be interpreted as a final tone type influenced by Bangyeongtori rather than be included in category of the final tone type of Menaritori.




In the last place, there are some melodies whose final tone is “sol” but in most cases, they slightly ascend the ending by 3 intervals from the final tone of “mi” or they slightly release the ending at the final tone of “la”. For this reason, the function of “sol” as a final tone is unclear.
In conclusion, the most representative final tone of Menaritori, a native folk song of Gyeonggi-do region is “mi”, the lowest tone of musical scale. Also, “la” and “do'” are also used as final tones and the final tones are differentiated according to the function of local folk songs.
