『법화경』에서 법사행으로서 법공양에 관한 연구 (The Research on the Dharma Offering in the Lotus Sutra as the Practice of the Dharma Expounder)

초록

본 논문에서는 『법화경』에 나타난 법공양의 의미와 또 이와 관련한 법사행의 공덕과 실천에 대해 살펴보았다 『법화경』은 대승불교의 중심 경전으로서 특히 동아시아불교에서 신앙과 의례에 있어 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 그런데 『법화경』의 신앙적인 차원에서는 그동안 연구가 많이 되었지만, 의례적인 측면과 법사행의 법공양에 관한 연구는 그다지 많지 않다. 천태의 관음신행을 중심으로 법사의 법공양을 논의한 연구는 있지만, 본 논문에서는 『법화경』에 나타난 법사행과 법공양의 실천과 의미를 구체적으로 살펴보려는 것이다.
『법화경』은 일불승을 통한 모든 중생의 성불을 주장하는데, 그러한 성불의 덕목 중의 하나가 법공양과 법사행이다. 법공양과 법사행을 통해 신행과 수행, 그리고 깨달음을 성취할 수 있는 것이다. 따라서 『법화경』의 신앙적 실체와 깨달음의 요건을 제대로 파악하기 위해서는 법공양의 의미와 법사의 법공양 실천에 대한 연구가 선행되어야 한다.
『법화경』에는 법공양과 법사행에 관한 내용이 많지만 그 중에서도 『법화경』을 수지(受持)·독(讀)·송(誦)·해설(解說)·서사(書寫)하는 오종법사(五種法師)를 설하고 있는 「법사품」이 중요하다. 일승진리를 이해하고 일념에 수희하여 묘법을 지니고 오종법사행과 공양․공경 등 일승인행의 법사행을 하면 미래에 반드시 성불한다는 깨달음을 제시하고 있다. 또 「법사공덕품」에서 법사는 부모로 받은 육근으로 오종법사행과 여래행을 통해 육근청정을 이룬다고 하였다. 이처럼 『법화경』에서는 법사행을 실천함으로써 중도실상을 깨달아 성불할 수 있음을 명확히 밝히고 있다.
『법화경』에서 법사는 여러 보살로 나타나 있다. 보살은 부처님의 본원에 의해 이루어지는 법의 부촉을 받들어 법이 끊어지지 않고 항상 전해지기 위해 홍경을 하며 법공양을 실천한다. 상불경보살, 약왕보살, 묘음보살, 관세음보살 기타 미진수 보살은 대자비심과 유화인욕의 마음으로 항상 실상에 안주하여 게으름 없이 보살과 사부대중을 위해 법사행을 실천하여 중생을 구제하며 자리이타를 통해 성불을 이룬다. 법공양은 여래의 법을 그대로 잘 받들어 행하고 그 은혜에 보답하는 것이다.
『법화경』은 성불에 대한 믿음과 더불어 실천행을 강조하는 경전이다. 특히 본 논문에서 살펴보았듯이 부처님께서 부촉하신 법을 지니고 홍경하며, 여래행을 그대로 실천하는 법사행으로 자리이타를 이루어 성불에 이르는 모든 행이 법공양이다. 이것은 불교의 궁극적 목표인 깨달음의 길은 단지 수행으로만 이루어지는 것이 아니라 법사의 법공양의 공덕으로 인해 육근청정을 이루며 결국 성불까지 이룰 수 있음을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper examined the meaning of the Dharma offering in the Lotus Sutra and the practice of the Dharma Expounder’s merit and performance. The Lotus Sutra has an important position in East Asian Buddhism as the main Sutra in Mahayana Buddhism, especially in religious belief and Buddhist ritual. However, there are not many studies related to the ritual part of the Lotus Sutra and the Dharma offering of the practice of the Dharma Expounder whereas many are about religious beliefs in the Lotus Sutra. Though there is a previous research on the Dharma Expounder’s dharma offering within the belief and practice of Avalokiteśvara in Tiantai sect, however, this paper tried to research specifically on the practice of the Dharma Expounder in the Lotus Sutra and the practice of the Dharma offering including its meaning.
The Lotus Sutra states attaining the Buddhahood of all sentient beings through the One-Buddha Vehicle, and one of the virtues of achieving Buddhahood is the Dharma offering and the practice of the Dharma Expounder. Fulfilling the belief, practice, and the enlightenment, can be done through the Dharma offering and the practice of the Dharma Expounder. Therefore, the research on the meaning of the Dharma offering and the practice of the Dharma offering performed by the Dharma Expounder should be preceded to understand the subject of religious belief and the requirement for enlightenment in the Lotus Sutra.
There are lots of contents on the Dharma offering and the practice of the Dharma Expounder, above all the chapter of the Expounder of the Dharma[「法師品」] has crucial importance which preaches about the five types of practice, that are receiving instruction[受持], reading[讀], reciting[誦], explaining[解說], and copying[書寫]. This chapter suggests that, the one who understands the truth of the One-Buddha Vehicle[一乘眞理], accepts the truth with delight in a single thought[一念受喜], keeps the Subtle Dharma[妙法], performs the five types of practice, and practice the One-Vehicle practice of the Dharma Expounder receives prediction of enlightenment in future. In the chapter of the Benefits Obtained by an Expounder of the Dharma[「法師功德品」], the Dharma Expounder attains the purifying the six senses[六根淸淨] through the practice of five types of practice and the practice of the Tathāgata[如來行] that is done through the physical body of the six senses. Likewise, this chapter of the Lotus Sutra is clearly explaining that through the practice of the Dharma Expounder, one can achieve enlightenment by awakening oneself to the genuine truth of the Middle Path.
In the Lotus Sutra, the Dharma Expounder appears as several Bodhisattvas. Bodhisattva practice the Dharma offering that is recommended by the original vows of the Buddha and performs the Dharma offering so that it could be transmitted without discontinuance. With great compassion and forbearing patience, Sadāparibhūta Bodhisattva[常不輕菩薩], Bhaiṣajyarāja Bodhisattva[ 藥王菩薩], Gadgadasvara Bodhisattva[妙音菩薩], Avalokiteśvara[觀世音菩薩], and an uncountable number of Bodhisattvas[微塵數 菩薩] diligently perform the practice of the Dharma Expounder to edify sentient beings and thereby accomplish the Buddhahood through Perfecting of Self for Perfecting Others[自利利他]. The Dharma offering is to perform the Dharma of Tathāgata and to return Tathāgata’s favor.
The Lotus Sutra is the Sutra that emphasizes the belief in attaining Buddhahood and the practice. Especially, as examined in this paper, the Dharma offering is about accomplishing the Perfecting of Self for Perfecting Others with all practices of achieving the Buddhahood that is spreading the Buddha’s Dharma and performing the practice of the Dharma Expounder with the practice of the Tathāgata. This implies that the path to enlightenment, the ultimate purpose of Buddhism, is not only at practice but also at the merit from the Dharma Expounder’s offering of the Dharma that leads to accomplishing the Buddhahood through perfecting the purification of the six senses.
