통일신라 瑞花雙鳥文鏡의 출현과 전개 (The appearance and development of Bronze mirrors with paired bird and holly flower patterns during the Unified Silla)

초록

고대 동북아지역에 있어 동경은 사상과 믿음 등 사회문화적 관점, 역사적 배경을 토대로 다양한 문양이 공유되었다. 특히 중국의 위진남북조 시기와 한반도의 삼국시대에 다양한 동경이 출현하고 소멸하는 과정에서 당시의 문화교류 양상을 엿볼 수 있다.
이처럼 동경에 장식된 문양은 단순히 물건을 장식하거나 특정한 상징성을 표출시키는 것 외에도 그 시대가 필요로 하는 규범이나 가치관을 도상으로 체계화한 것이라 할 수 있다. 그중에서 봉황 등 새 문양은 삼국시대 유입되어 생활 속에 깊이 스며들며 정착하게 되었다.
삼국의 대표적인 새 문양은 고구려 고분벽화의 삼족오, 백제 금동대향로의 봉황, 신라 서봉총 출토 금관의 새 장식이며 통일신라 들어서는 와당에서도 확인된다. 다만 동경의 주된 문양으로는 고려 전기 笙篁을 부는 인물 곁에 춤추는 봉황을 묘사한 簫史鳳凰文銅鏡이 최초라고 보는 것이 학계의 일반적인 견해이다.
하지만 최근 일본학계에서 초기 서화쌍조문경이 통일신라에서 제작되었을 개연성이 제기됨으로써 이를 토대로 다시 검토되어야 할 여지가 있다고 본다. 즉 삼국시대 도교와 불교의 영향을 받아 특수한 목적으로 봉황문이 거울에 장식된 이후, 삼국이 신라로 통합되는 과정을 거치면서 지배층은 물론 백성들의 편안한 삶과 안위를 강조하고자 봉황문이 적극 채택되면서 새로운 서화쌍조문경을 제작하게 된 것으로 생각된다.
이처럼 동북아지역에서 유행한 새 문양에 주목하여 특히 서화쌍조문경의 변모양상을 살핌으로써 통일신라에서의 전반적인 문화상을 이해하고자 한다. 무엇보다도 통일신라의 통합사회의 이상적 이미지를 담지하는 정치적 주제이자 문화적 코드로서 새 문양의 채택과 변모과정이 지니는 역사적 의미를 파악해 보고자 한다.

영어초록

In ancient Northeast Asia, the bronze mirror shared various patterns based on socio-cultural perspectives and historical backgrounds such as ideas and beliefs. In particular, during the Wei Jin Northern and Southern Dynasties in China and the Three Kingdoms Period on the Korean Peninsula, various bronze mirrors appeared and disappeared, indicating the pattern of cultural exchange at that time. In this way, the patterns decorated in the bronze mirror are not only decorating objects or expressing specific symbolism, but also systematizing the norms or values required by the era as icons. Among them, new patterns such as phoenixes were introduced during the Three Kingdoms Period and permeated deeply into life and settled.
The representative bird patterns of the three kingdoms are the Three Kingdoms of Goguryeo, the phoenix of Baekje's gilt-bronze incense burner and the gold crown excavated from the Shilla Dynasty's Seobongchong, and the roof end tiles that enters the Unified Silla Kingdom. However, it is the general opinion of the academic community that the main pattern of the mirror is the first one depicting the phoenix dancing next to a person playing an musical instrument of the early Goryeo dynasty.
However, it should be reviewed again as the possibility has been raised that the early calligraphy and twin-sculpture scriptures were made in Unified Silla. After the phoenix was decorated on mirrors for special purposes under the influence of Taoism and Buddhism during the Three Kingdoms Period, it is thought that the phoenix pattern, which emphasizes the comfortable life and safety of the ruling class as well as the people, was actively adopted and a new bronze mirror with paired bird and holy flower pattern was created.
By paying attention to bird patterns popular in Northeast Asia, I would like to examine the changes in the Bronze mirror with paired bird and holy flower pattern in particular to understand the overall cultural image in Unified Silla. Above all, I would like to understand the historical significance of the process of adoption and transformation of new patterns as a political theme and cultural code that supports the ideal image of an integrated society in Unified Silla.
