唐代 螺鈿鏡의 분석을 통한 제작지 추론 (Inference of Manufacturing Site through Analysis of Mirror inlaid with Mother-of-pearlfrom Tang Dynasty)

초록

螺鈿鏡은 조개와 당시 유행한 보석으로 장식한 거울이다. 당대 나전경은 32여점이 확인되며, 대다수 중국과 일본에 남아 있다. 현존하는 나전경은 다양한 주제가 문양으로 표현되어 있으며, 동일한 문양표현이 없는 것이 특징이다. 이는 문양을 주조로 찍어낸 것이 아닌 나전과 옻칠을 이용해 장인이 제작했던 것과 소비자의 취향을 반영했던 결과로 판단된다. 본고는 일반 동경과 제작기법의 차이가 있는 나전경의 특징을 살펴보고, 이와 더불어 분양분석과 제작지 검토를 중심으로 고찰했다.
당대 나전경은 문양을 기준으로 인물문, 화조문, 용문으로 나눌 수 있다. 인물문경은 도교적 요소를 반영하여 인물들이 풍류를 즐기는 모습이 표현되어 있다. 그리고 화조문경은 꽃과 새가 규칙적으로 배열된 것이 특징으로 비슷한 유형의 나전경이 제작된 것으로 보아, 이러한 화조문 도안이 유행했던 것으로 생각된다. 이중 일본 정창원 소장 나전경들은 중국에서 제작된 것으로 추정되며, 이 거울에 표현된 화문은 중국 화문 나전경과 다른 양상을 보여 주목된다. 화려한 화문이 나전과 玳瑁로 표현되어 있으며, 바탕에는 다양한 석질의 재료로 꾸몄다. 그리고 문양 중 사자와 코뿔소의 표현은 이 동물에 대한 정확한 인식이 필요함을 근거로 이 동물을 접할 수 있었던 당 황실과의 연관성을 생각해 보았다.
당대 나전경의 제작은 고도의 기술을 갖춘 숙련된 장인에 의해 제작된 것으로 보인다. 이는 당시 唐六典 과 新唐書 의 기록에 나전을 다루는 기술을 습득하는데 오랜기간이 걸렸다는 내용을 통해 알 수 있다. 그리고 나전경 제작지로 양주를 살펴보았다. 당대 양주는 동경을 매년 공물로 보낼 만큼 양질의 동경을 생산했으며, 발달된 운하와 입지조건으로 인해 내･외국에서 상인들이 유입되던 곳이다. 이곳에서 활동하던 외국 상인들은 나전과 보석류 등 나전경에 사용되던 재료를 판매했다. 이를 통해 볼 때, 당시 양주는 동경을 제작하는 기술과 재료가 모두 충족된 지역이었던 만큼 나전경과 같은 섬세하고 화려한 거울 제작이 용이했던 것으로 판단된다.

영어초록

Mirror inlaid with mother-of-pearl is the mirror decorated with the shell and the jewels popular at that time. It is confirmed that there are 32 mirrors inlaid with mother-of-pearl from Tang Dynasty and mostly remained in China and Japan. In the existing mirrors inlaid with mother-of-pearl, diverse themes are expressed with the patterns and that no same pattern is found is its characteristic. which is considered as the results that the master craftsmen manufactured them and the consumer's tastes were reflected. This paper examined and contemplated the characteristics of the mirror inlaid with mother-of-pearl, which is different from the general bronze mirror in the manufacturing technique focusing on the pattern analysis and manufacturing site review. Mirror inlaid with mother-of-pearl from Tang Dynasty can be classified into the character pattern, flower and bird pattern and dragon pattern based on its pattern. In the character pattern, the image that the characters love and enjoy the arts was expressed reflecting the Taoistic elements. And the flower and bird pattern has characteristic that the flowers and birds are arranged regularly, and considering that the mirrors inlaid with mother-of-pearl having similar pattern were manufactured, it is deemed that the design of such flower and bird pattern were popular. Among them, the flower and bird pattern expressed in the mirror inlaid with mother-of-pearl kept in Shosho-in in Japan showed the pattern different from the Chinese mirror inlaid with mother-of-pearl having flower pattern, which calls our attention. The fancy flower pattern is expressed with the mother-of-pearl and the tortoiseshell, and the background was made with the diverse lithic materials. And among the patterns, the expression of the lion and the rhinoceros made the author to consider the connection with the royal family that could see these animals based on that the exact perception on them is required.
The mirror inlaid with mother-of-pearl from Tang Dynasty seems to be manufactured by the skilled master craftsmen having advanced technique, which is known from the records in Tangliudian (唐六典) and XinTangshu (新唐書) saying that acquiring the technique to dealing with mother-of- pearl took long time.
Yangzhou was examined as the manufacturing site of mirror inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Yangzhou during Tang Dynasty is the place that produced the good quality bronze mirror enough to send bronze mirror as tribute every year and the domestic and overseas merchants were concentrated due to developed canal and the geographical condition. The foreign merchants who were doing business there sold the materials used for bronze mirror such as mother-of-pearl, jewelry, etc. Considering that, since Yangzhou at that time is the region having the technique and the materials required to manufacture the bronze mirror, it is deemed to be the place easy to manufacture the delicate and fancy mirrors like mirror inlaid with mother-of-pearl.
