『관무량수경』의 16관법과 염불선 (16 kinds Vipaśyanā of 『gwanmuryangsugyeong』 and Buddhānu-SmṛtiSeon)

초록

금타대사와 청화선사는 한국불교의 근대와 현대의 불교계에 지대한 영향을 발휘하여 후학은 물론이요, 한국불교계에 반드시 조명을 받아야할 분들 중에 두 분이다. 이 두 분의 불교학적 소양은 근본불교로부터 밀교에 이르기까지 지극히 다양다종하다. 심지어는 현대물리학에 이르기까지 선정 속에서 체득하여 후학을 계도하였다. 주목할 것은 한국불교의 전통적인 회통불교에 지대한 관심을 가지고 실질적인 고증을 통해서 한국불교가 인도의 근본불교로부터 밀교에 이르고, 중국의 순선시대 조사선으로부터 간화선과 더불어 염불선이 확립되어 전개되는 과정까지 입증하였다. 특히 염불선에 대한 정통불교의 문헌적 입증은 특기할 내용으로 간주된다.
따라서 필자는 ‘『관무량수경』의 16관법과 염불선’에 대한 논제를 가지고, 먼저 16관법의 성립배경을 인도와 중국의 불교의 정황을 살펴서 『관경』에 드러난 정선(定善)의 13가지 관법을 검토해 보았다. 다음에 산선(散善)의 3가지 복업을 통해서 대승과 소승, 세간의 선행을 살펴서 염불선의 성립내용을 금타대사와 청화선사가 주창한 염불선의 연원까지 고찰하였다. 끝으로 염불선의 원만성취는 원융무애한 선과 제교를 회통한 궁극의 귀결은 바로 마음의 청정을 확인하고 체득하는 것이었다. 나아가 극락의 염불선정에서 열반의 세계를 구체적으로 체험하여 사지(四智)와 오지(五智)를 구족한 아미타불을 체화하는 것이 바로 염불선인 것이었다.
이상의 16관법과 염불선은 금타대사와 청화선사 두 선지식이 평소에 주창하고 직접체험을 통해서 역대에 선지식들이 주목한 『관무량수경』에 설해진 법계일상(法界一相)으로 시심작불(是心作佛)이면 시심시불(是心是佛)이라는 즉심즉불(卽心卽佛)의 성재작용(性在作用)에 주력한 조사선의 정통을 계승한 전통불법이다. 따라서 현재 우리나라는 다종다양한 종교의 섬이라 불릴 정도의 다양한 종교가 산재한 현대에 반드시 필요한 종교적 실천이 요구된다. 이에 두 분의 선지식이 주창한 주지적이고 철학적인 선수행과 주정적이고 종교적인 염불신앙이 조화를 이루는 현대에 매우 적합한 수행이 염불선이라고 간주되어 간략히 고찰해 보았다. 또한 염불선은 인도와 중국, 한국에 이르기까지 정통성을 확보한 중요한 정통수행의 요체로 간주되어 현재와 미래에도 유효하게 여겨진다고 하겠다. 그래서 이것이 바로 안심입명(安心立命)의 청정한 마음의 고향을 찾아 본래 청정한 마음의 정토로 가는 길인 것이다.
