초록

이 논문은 ‘『화엄경』의 문학성 연구를 - 『화엄경』의 중심사상에 담긴 문학성을 중심으로’ 살펴본 글이다. 여기서 살펴본 내용은 크게 두 가지 측면이다. 제Ⅱ장에서 언급한 주제는 『화엄경』의 중심사상에 대한 이해를 살폈고, 제Ⅲ장은 『화엄경』에 담긴 문학적 특성에 대해 분석해보았다. 이러한 내용을 토대로 『화엄경』의 중심사상에 담긴 수승한 문학성을 도출해본다면, 첫째는 『화엄경』에서 여래출현은 개개 존재가 저마다 고유한 제 가치를 평등하게 다 갖고 있다는 것이다. 여래출현은 여래의 지혜인 여래의 성품이 그대로 드러난 존재이기 때문에, 『화엄경』의 모든 내용은 사실상 여래출현으로써 부처님의 세계를 교설하고, 불 세계를 보살만행으로 장엄하고 있는 경전이라는 것을 알 수 있다. 둘째는 일승(一乘)은 곧 일불승(一佛乘)을 지칭하는 개념으로, 보살행은 부처되기를 목적으로 보살만행을 실천해야 한다는 것이다. 아래로는 중생을 교화하고, 위로는 깨달음을 구하기 위하여 자리(自利)와 이타(利他)가 원만한 대행(大行)으로써 서원을 세우고 십바라밀 등의 다양한 선업(善業)을 행한다. 그렇기 때문에 『화엄경』에서 일승보살도 사상은 42계위의 맨 첫 번째 단계인 십주(十住) → 십행(十行) → 십회향(十廻向)→십지(十地)→ 등각(等覺)→ 묘각(妙覺)은 일승에 들어가기 위한 보살도의 실천행이며, 『화엄경』을 대표하는 수행도 라고 할 수 있다. 셋째는 법계연기는 우주만유법계의 사물이 천차만별이나, 피차가 서로 인과(因果)관계를 가지고 있으며, 하나도 단독으로 존재한 것이 없다는 것이다. 이것은 바로 우리의 삶이 바로 법계연기라는 이치이다. 넷째는 여래출현의 문학적 비유로 들 수 있는 것은 경명에서부터 발견된다. 『대방광불화엄경』의 원 이름은 『대방광불잡화엄식경』이다. 여기서 ‘잡화엄식(雜華嚴飾)’이란 온갖 꽃으로 장엄하게 장식되어 있다는 표현은 문학적 비유이다. 이외에도 『화엄경』전체를 분석했을 때 보이는 유려한 문학적 비유 등은 다양한 장르의 문학적 표현방법들이다. 그렇기 때문에 여래출현의 문학적 비유의 일례는 『화엄경』전체 경문에서 확인 가능하다고 하겠다. 다섯째는 일승보살도의 문학적 일례는 단연 ｢입법계품｣이다. ｢입법계품｣에서 주로 사용되고 있는 문학적 표현방법은 소설적 구조가 돋보이며, 여기에 은유와 열거법, 점층법 등의 수사법등을 사용하여 경전의 몰입도를 높여 교설하고 있다. 여섯째는 법계연기에 나타난 문학적 특성은 법계가 시․공간을 초월한 우주적 스케일의 장대함으로 판타지(Fantasy)로 교설되고 있다는 것이다. 따라서 본 연구의 주 텍스트인 『화엄 경』은 고도의 다양한 문학적 기법들을 사용하여 미혹한 중생들을 불세계(佛世界)로 증입하도록 인도하고 있다는데 그 목적을 두었다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이것이 화엄대경에 담긴 수승한 문학적 예술성이다.

영어초록

This paper examines the study of the literary nature of the Avatamsaka Sutra - focusing on the literary nature contained in the central thought of the Avatamsaka Sutra. What we have looked at here is mainly two aspects. The topics mentioned in Chapter Ⅱ looked at the understanding of the central ideas of Avatamsaka Sutra , and Chapter Ⅲ analyzed the literary characteristics contained in Avatamsaka . Based on these contents, if we derive the sublime literary value contained in the central idea of the Avatamsaka Sutra, the first is that the appearance of the Tathagata in the Avatamsaka Sutra means that each being equally possesses its own unique value. Since the appearance of the Tathagata is a being that reveals the nature of the Tathagata, the wisdom of the Tathagata, it can be seen that all the contents of the Avatamsaka Sutra are in fact a scripture that teaches the world of Buddha through the appearance of the Tathagata and magnifies the world of Buddha with the atrocities of Bodhisattva. . Second, Ilseung (一乘) is a concept that refers to Ilbulseung (一佛乘), and Bodhisattva practice means that one must practice Bodhisattva practice with the goal of becoming a Buddha. In order to edify sentient beings below and to seek enlightenment above, one makes a vow and performs various good deeds such as the Ten Paramitas through smooth action of self-interest and altruism. Therefore, in the Avatamsaka Sutra, the ideology of One Vehicle Bodhisattva is the first stage of the 42 orders: ten precepts → ten steps → ten directions → ten earths → equal enlightenment → Myogak (妙覺) is a practice of the Bodhisattva way to enter the world of one world, and can be said to be a practice representing the Avatamsaka Sutra. Third, the dharmakaya origin is that although the objects in the universal dharma world are infinitely different, they all have a causal relationship with each other, and none of them exists independently. This is the principle that our life is an act of dharmakaya. Fourth, what can be considered a literary metaphor for the appearance of the Tathagata is found in the scriptures. The original name of Great Banggwang Buddha Avatamsaka Sutra is Great Bangkwang Buddha Avatamsaka Sutra . Here, the expression ‘generally decorated with all kinds of flowers’ is a literary metaphor. In addition, the elegant literary metaphors that can be seen when analyzing the entire Avatamsaka Sutra are literary expression methods of various genres. Therefore, an example of the literary analogy of the appearance of the Tathagata can be found in the entire text of the Avatamsaka Sutra. Fifth, a literary example of Ilseungbodhisattva path is definitely ｢Gebeopgyeopum｣. The literary expression method mainly used in ｢Legislative Gyepum｣ stands out for its novelistic structure, and it uses rhetorical methods such as metaphor, enumeration, and stratification to increase the level of immersion in the scriptures. Sixth, the literary characteristic shown in the acting of the Buddhist world is that the Buddhist world is taught as a fantasy with a grandiose cosmic scale that transcends time and space. Therefore, it can be seen that the main text of this study, the Avatamsaka Sutra, aims to guide deluded sentient beings into the world of Buddha by using various advanced literary techniques. This is the sublime literary artistry contained in the Avatamsaka Sutra.
