초록

도교(道敎)의 구원은 성선(成仙), 곧 신선이 되는 것이며, 성선의 내용은 바로 득도(得道)이다. 도교의 신선은 단순히 현세에서 육신을 오랫동안 보존하며 사는 존재가 아니라, 정신과 육신을 초월하여 눈에는 보이지 않는 새로운 몸을 갖는 존재이다. 그리고 그러한 존재가 되기 위해서는 도와 하나가 되어야 한다.
그런데 성선, 혹은 득도의 방법에 대해서는 시대나 분파에 따라 의견이 다르다. 대체로 당대 이전의 도교분파에서는 외재적인 궁극적 실재인 도(道)와 그의 현현태인 다양한 신들에 대한 절대의존적인 신앙에 의해 구원을 받는다고 하는 사상이 주류를 이루었다. 즉 타력적 신앙형태가 주로 나타난다. 이와 달리 당대를 기점으로 그 이후에는 점차 신에 대한 타력적 신앙이 아니라 개인의 노력과 수행에 의한 자력적 깨달음이 강조되었다. 후자의 대표적인 예가 내단도(內丹道)이다. 다시 말해 당대 이전에는 타력적 신앙이 유행한 반면, 송대 이후에는 자력적 수행이 강조되었다. 물론 현재에도 도사들을 중심으로 한 자력적 수행을 강조하는 도교분파인 전진교(全眞敎)와 타력적이고 대중적이며 의례중심적 성격이 강한 정일교(正一敎)가 공존하고 있다. 그러나 시대적으로 보아 송대 이후에는 자력적 수행에 대한 관심이 매우 지배적으로 나타난다.
이렇듯 도교의 득도론에 변화를 초래하게 된 데에는 여러 가지 요인이 있겠지만, 그 중 가장 짚고 넘어가야 할 것은 불교의 심성론과 불성사상의 영향이라고 할 수 있다. 당대를 중심으로 본격적인 도불융합이 왕성하게 이루어지면서 수행방법과 득도론에도 변화가 나타나게 되었다고 말할 수 있다.
특별히 득도론 변화에 영향을 미친 것은 불성사상이다. 도교에서는 불성사상을 수용하여 도교식 불성개념을 산출하게 되었으니, 그것이 바로 ‘도성(道性)’이다. 당대의 많은 경전들이 ‘도성’ 개념을 바탕으로 인간 안에 내재된 득도 가능성과 본래적 신성을 제시하고 있다. 도성개념을 제시하는 경전 가운데에서도 『본제경』은 주목할 만한 경전이다. 『본제경』은 본래 타력적인 대중구제를 강조하는 영보경 계통의 경전인데, 그 이전의 영보경들과는 달리 타력적이고 주술적인 신앙을 통한 대중구제가 아니라 중생 자신 안에 이미 갖추어져 있는 도성의 발현을 통한 대중구제를 제시하고 있다. 『본제경』에서는 도성개념을 통해 모든 중생과 궁극적 실재인 도(道), 그리고 도의 현현태인 천존(天尊), 삼자 사이의 본질적 연속성과 동일성을 확보하고 나아가 이를 통해 보다 더 보편적이고 대승적인 차원에서의 중생구제 사상을 확보하고자 하였다.
『본제경』을 비롯한 당대 도교경전의 도성사상은 바로 자력적 신앙과 보편적 구제의 가능성을 열어주는 핵심개념으로서 송대 이후 내단도교와 같이 자력적 수행중심의 도교가 발달하게 된 새로운 계기를 마련하는 데 기여하였다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

There are two types of religious soteriology in the world. One is a soteriology which insists the salvation comes from the reliance on Other Power(他力) such as God(or the Ultimate reality). This type of soteriology can be found in the religious traditions such as Christianity, Islam and Judaism and emphasizes the revelation and the grace of God. The other type insists the salvation comes from the reliance on Self Power(自力). It emphasizes the enlightenment through the individual meditation and practices and can be found the religious traditions like Buddhism and Confucianism.
In the case of Daoism, both types of soteriology exist in its tradition. Roughly speaking, Daoist schools of the period before Dang dynasty such as Lingbao School(靈寶派), Shangqing School(上淸派) and the Celestial Masters School have a sotertiology which emphasizes the reliance on the Dao(道) and various gods including the Celestial Worthy(Tianzun, 天尊) as the manifestations of the Dao. On the other hand, the Daoist schools after Dang period mainly insists that one can obtain the Dao(得道), or become Immortals(成仙) just by self-enlightenment on the basis of self-practices
This paper is for examining the reason or factor which brought about the change of soteriolgy in History of Daoism. As a possible thesis, I would suggest the formation of the concepts like Dao-nature(道性) in the Dang Daoism.
The Dao-nature is a Daoistic expression of Buddha nature(佛性) of Mahayana Buddhism. Especially emphasized in Mahayana Buddhism, all sentient beings have Buddha Nature/ Essence. One can become a Buddha(a supreme enlightened being) in due course if one practises diligently and attains purity of mind (i.e., absolutely no delusions or afflictions). The concept of Dao-nature suggests the potential possibility of salvation of man under the influence of the Mahayana Buddhism and its concept of Buddha-nature
The Scripture of the Genesis Point, Benji jing presents itself in a Mahayana format. The title phrase ‘benji(本際)’ originates in Buddhist text, where it refers to the state before the any consciousness arises.
As a scripture of Dang Daoism, the Benji jing, like other text of the era, focuses on the notion that all of beings have a "Dao-nature(Daoxing, 道性), which is our true reality, "embodied in all conscious beings and even all animals, plants, trees and rocks". The important doctrinally for Lingbao scriptures is its Daoist version of the "bodhisattva ideal of Mahayana Buddhism". The main ideas of Lingbao scriptures typically contain the wish for the universal salvation of all living beings.
The Lingbao scriptures before the era of Dang emphasize the salvation of people by reliance on the supernatural power of the canon itself or the talismans(符) and invocations(呪). The Lingbao scriptures were regarded as sacred things, which manifested the Sacred itself and possessed the sacred power themselves. The Lingbao scriptures such as Duren jing(度人經) were believed to be the most effective text for achieving universal salvation of all living things and becoming the Immortal by reciting formulas and invocations(呪) in the scriptures and praying repeatedly.
The concept of Dao-nature shown in the scriptures such as the Benji jing played a pivotal role in establishing self-reliance salvation theory and served as a bridge linking the soteriology of reliance on Other Power early Daoist tradition of and that of reliance on Self-Power one of later Daoist tradition like "interior alchemy(內丹, inner cinnabar) or the Qhanzhen school(全眞敎).
