초록

본 연구는 이돈화의 인간관을 주제로 다루는데, 그가 유교적 전통의 관계적 인간, 즉 인륜에 대해 어떠한 태도를 취하고 있는지, 또 일본의 근대 사상가로부터 수용한 인격 개념을 어떻게 인륜과의 관계에서 재해석하고 있는지를 중점적으로 분석한다. 구체적으로 이돈화에게 크게 영향을 주었다고 알려진 일본의 근대 사상가들과의 비교 작업을 주된 연구 방법으로 취하면서 그 사상적 차이를 규명하고, 이돈화가 어떻게 그들과 자신을 차별화하고 있는지 밝힌다.
이돈화는 동양의 윤리사상을 구체적인 경험 세계, 즉 식민지 조선 사회를 어떻게 효과적으로 개조해 당대의 혼란을 수습할 수 있을지 깊게 고민하였다. 그는 유교 전통 자체가 낡은 사상이라고 보긴 하였으나 인륜이라는 관계성 그 자체가 잘못되었으며 폐기되거나 서양 사상에 의해 대체되어야 한다고 생각하지 않았다. 오히려 그는 관계 본위의 유교적 인륜을 개조하여 이 관계적 인간관을 서양의 인격이라는 개념 위에 세우고자 하였다. 즉, 서양의 개인적 인격은 사람성 자연의 본체로써 세워 놓고, 그 바탕 위에서 유교의 인륜 개념을 재구성하고 있다. 이는 이른바 동아시아의 중체서용(中體西用), 동도서기(東道西器), 화혼양재(和魂洋才)가 아닌 인간관에 대한 ‘서체중용’, ‘서도동기’, ‘양혼화재’의 관점이라고 부를 수 있을 것이다. 하지만 여기서 그치는 것이 아니라, 이돈화는 인간을 포섭하여 전 우주를 표현하는 새로운 인간 유형, 즉 인간격을 제시하고 있다. 이돈화 인간관은 서양의 근대적 인간관을 수용하는데 그친 것이 아니라, 동학이 지닌 종교성을 바탕으로 인간의 이성 중심성을 벗어나 전우주를 표상하는 인간 유형을 제시하고 있다는 점에 독특성이 존재한다.

영어초록

In the midst of the tumultuous period experienced in colonial Joseon society, Yi Tonhwa embarked on a profound journey to redefine the principles governing human ethics and relationships, grounded in the Confucian tradition of relational ethics(人倫). Contrary to dismissing the Confucian philosophy as antiquated, he sought to rejuvenate it by intricately intertwining it with the modern concepts of person(人格) embraced by contemporary Japanese thinkers. This study delves deeply into this intellectual endeavor, undertaking a meticulous comparative analysis with the theories of those Japanese contemporaries who profoundly influenced him. Through this lens, we aim to elucidate the distinct stance adopted by Yi Tonhwa, thereby illuminating the nuances that set his philosophy apart.
While grappling with the intricacies of adapting Eastern ethical thoughts to the tangible realities of his era, Yi Tonhwa harbored an enduring belief in the foundational merit of Confucianism's relational approach to human interactions. He envisioned a philosophical renaissance that did not supplant the relational aspects of human relations with Western philosophies, but rather re-envisioned it. This approach can be characterized as a perspective on humanity, wherein the Western concept of the individual serves as the core foundation, fostering a renewed Confucian ethos surrounding human relationships.
Yi Tonhwa’s innovative approach did not halt at the integration of Western and Eastern philosophies. Drawing inspiration from the spiritual tenets of Donghak (東學), he ventured further to conceptualize a novel archetype of human existence, a trans-human(人間格) that embodies and articulates the vast expanse of the universe. In this, he transcended the boundaries of conventional human centrality dictated by reason, paving the way for a groundbreaking paradigm that reverberates with the cosmic synergy. This intricate blend of philosophies culminates in a holistic view of humanity, where the person is not merely an entity influenced by modern Western perspectives, but a being resonating with the universal echoes, harmoniously bridging the essence of humanity with the grandeur of the universe.
Through this study, we seek to intricately unravel the depth and breadth of Yi Tonhwa's perspectives on humanity, accentuating the innovative facets that earmark his philosophical discourse as a beacon of intellectual resurgence during a period marred by societal chaos.
